I am going to make some tomorrow. Has anyone else here tried making them yet? If so, what worked well and what didn't? How did they taste? Did you decorate them with anything? I don't want them to look nice but then taste horrible because there are chunks in the liquid or things that don't dissolve. What else should I know or have on hand that I might not be thinking about? Thanks!

Good luck! 😀
I will be watching this thread, because I will be fascinated to hear how it goes for people. I am crafty - I regularly make my own bath bombs - and I’m a moderately skilled cook. But these seemed beyond my skill level. I envisioned chocolate everywhere and a high level of frustration on my part. 😜

I had every intention on offering them with cookies this year, even purchased the molds, but since I'm not doing cookies I haven't make any yet. I joined the All Things Hot Cocoa Bombs! on FB last year and it's been a wealth of information. The group was SO quiet until September then BOOM! so much activity.
Good luck!

I just read this article and it gives the suggestion of just pouring hot milk over Lindt Truffles. I'm thinking that might be something to try first. Hot Chocolate Bombs

I have not, but plan to try over Christmas break.
I have an order to purchase 4 of them at $5 each. Is that the going rate?

Eh. they look hard. Like you need to know what you are doing. One of my co-workers luckily makes them, and she's been doing them non-stop with orders. Just looks too tricky to me. Good luck though!!

I like the idea of using Lindt truffles and then package them as chocolate bombs. If they are smaller than the ‘real’ chocolate bombs package them up with a smaller sized mug. Hmmmmm....sounds like a plan.

I just saw a YouTube video where she recommends using the kinder eggs (from the dollar store) for molds. Another option would be if you have those jello egg molds from years ago. I think I finally got rid of mine. I was wondering about using the egg bite molds I got for my instant pot. Which I keep forgetting to make egg bites. 🤷🏻♀️

I did a test run and made 2 bombs using Ghirardeli chocolate chips. Make sure when you put the melted chocolate in the mold, that you make sure it goes all the way to the rim. The rims have to be flat to be able to be sealed together.
I used a warm plate to melt the rim of one half before I placed it on the other half and used some extra chocolate to smooth the seam.
The milk needs to be very hot to melt the shell.
The Ghirardeli chocolate chips made the hot chocolate very rich and was yummy and gooey in the bottom of the cup.
I plan to make more in the next week or so.
They were surprisingly easy to make!

Thanks! I don’t think they are hard, but I do think they are fiddley. Luckily, you have plenty of guys in your house who will happily eat your fabulous failures! I’ve not made any bombs, but I did just make fudge last weekend... -To get smooth chocolate, I put it through a fine sieve. Melt it and then put a cup or so in the sieve, just tapping the side for it to flow through. A rubber scraper will get the extra off the bottom and help push through any that wants to stay in the sieve. -I think Ghirardelli chips melt the best, but bar chocolate would be even better. -If the chocolate won’t flow, a teaspoon of coconut oil will help. But don’t add too much or the balls will soften too much at room temperature. DON’T add water—the chocolate will seize up. - Have a wet washcloth nearby to wipe your fingers. Have your tap water warmed so that you can swish off the chocolate when you need to. This is the time to use your darker kitchen towels (mine are red!) -To get an even ridge to adhere the halves, you can briefly touch the edge to a hot skillet or electric griddle. But that seems dangerous to me—I’d be sure to drop it! -If they aren’t perfect, let it go. The fun is in the melting, not the perfect sphere! And the kitchen will be a mess but the house will smell heavenly!

I was looking for a local place, then remembered this local store. I've never tried their chocolates yet but have been wanting to. She didn't have the bombs but has these: Make our signature Truffogatos (espresso + truffle), Socolattes (espresso + milk + trufflle), and Hot Chocolates (milk + truffle) at home by blending in our secret recipe 72% dark chocolate liquid truffle and topping it with a fluffy handcrafted chocolate marshmallow.
I ordered some for Christmas and gifts, one set for us but hope DH doesn't find it, lol. This is the store: link

My 18 yo dd made them last week. Her first batch turned out okay but didn't look perfect and there was some struggle with it. Dh went and bought her the Wilton candy melt pot and she made a second batch. She said that pot is the greatest thing ever and she had no problems. The bombs turned out perfect. The first batch we used melts that we picked up at Hobby Lobby and the second batch was melts that we bought at Michaels. The ones from Michaels looked much better when they are done.
Both her and my 8 yo dd had a cup and loved it. I haven't tried it yet.
In the video I watched it showed the milk being poured over the bomb and that is when it opened up. When I tried that with the 8 yo it didn't work out as well. Emily made hers by filling the mug about half full with the hot milk, placed the bomb in there and then added more milk. It opened up much better that way. However, that is not how it showed in the video I watched. LOL
All in all the girls loved the hot chocolate and Emily enjoyed making them.

TJ’s is selling snowman shaped hot chocolate bombs for $1.99 ea. I accidentally dropped one and his head cracked off, but it looks like just mini marshmallows and chocolate chips encased in a white chocolate snowman.

I bought 5 for $30 recently. Two are regular chocolate. Two are white chocolate and one has crushed Andes mint candies in it along with the mix and marshmallows. I'm going to make one tonight.

my molds were supposed to arrive last week. still no sign of them. other than amazon, where is everyone finding the molds? I have bought 2 sets of molds. The first one I bought off of ebay (new in packaging) because I couldn't find any in stock. About a week later Amazon had some that showed it shipping in about a week or two. Mine were supposed to be delivered last week too but no sign of them either. Last scan was leaving Chino, CA on 11/21. I think her next batch she is going to try Ghiradeli chocolate chips. We originally tried using chips rather than the candy melts because I thought the taste would be better. We couldn't get our chocolate to melt correctly that night so we gave up and went with the chocolate melts instead.

I have all the stuff to do it but haven’t made any yet. I had a big volunteer project for school that I was working on the last couple weeks so I haven’t had the time. My friends have made and sold a ton of them already. Quality chocolate or melts is the key to good tasting cocoa. I have heard the Wilton melts taste the worst which is sad because they are the easiest to find.

My mom just made some yesterday and said they were very easy! I’m going to try some next week.
She got her molds from Amazon. She used regular semi-sweet chocolate chips for the shell. About half a bag made 5 whole shells. The easiest way to cover the inside is to pour some chocolate in the molds, use the back of a spoon to spread and cover the whole area, and then turn it upside down and let the excess chocolate drip out onto wax paper. (She then used a long flat knife to wipe all the chocolate off of the top of the mold, so that chocolate was only in the shells and had a nice flat edge.) That way the bombs don’t end up too thick.
She made normal hot chocolate ones with cocoa mix and marshmallows, a peppermint version, and a mocha version. We are trying them out tonight with dinner! The seam where the two halves were sealed is a tiny bit messy looking, but she drizzled chocolate or white chocolate and added sprinkles, so you can’t really tell. I think they look just like the “professional” ones! I’m excited to try making my own!

I have now made over 1500 shells (half a ball) and still have 325 to go.
I am using the infamous 3 piece molds that are so hard to get.
The making part is going well, but the tempering chocolate is slow going. I’m using real chocolate not candy melts or bark, so it must be tempered. I’ve got a good rhythm going so I should be able to knock off the last of all the shells this weekend.
Ive officially sold 195 singles and 206 4-packs. I’m exhausted lol.
I’m working on getting the e-commerce added to my website so I can have inventory and only sell what I have on hand!

I had never heard of these before. Now that I have, I have to ask why? Our family are big hot chocolate drinkers, so I don’t understand what is accomplished with these bombs. I had to check them out on Pinterest. They look like a lot of messy work.
I would love to see some success stories from those of you who give it a try.

She uses the packaging from a Kinder egg. Maybe it was the same video @jengie mentioned. I have seen people take 1/2 the mold and warm it on a plate on top of a candle warmer to melt the two pieces together. www.youtube.com/watch?v=IIdQPngfBbk
