Our smaller Target, CVS and Walgreens are being hit hard. Grocery stores are also being hit based on what I’ve read on ND. Groups come in, load up and walk out. Employees aren’t allowed to do anything and these groups know it. Went to pick up a prescription yesterday and was surprised to see a cop posted at the entrance of the store. Is this a huge problem at your stores?

Not in my area that I know of, but San Francisco is getting hit hard to the point that some of he drugstores are closing. Absolutely awful.
We love pretty close to San Francisco.

Not that I'm aware of. I haven't heard anything.

I read an article that there's been an uptick in thefts of food and baby items. People really need another stimulus package.

I haven't heard about any more shoplifting than whatever is "normal." But since I've been WFH I'm really out of the community news loop.

Can't speak to that, but our CVS had to get rid of their outdoor trash cans because someone(s) kept lighting them on fire.

I’ve literally witnessed theft at Home Depot. They don’t even call the cops. I knew the thieves and was willing to stay and make a report and the employees said don’t bother.

I haven't read about it so far. But just yesterday someone posted on ND that their car, parked in the spot next to the door at the local CVS, was broken into in under 2 minutes while he was in the store. White van backed into the spot next to it, broke the windows, grabbed stuff out of car and were gone in 30 seconds. It was all caught on surveillance tape. It's getting crazy around here.

In my area it's people messing around with cars and stealing packages.
So many of my area police departments make posts that they caught someone and they were released and they can't do a thing about it -- and it makes me so mad.
For instance, caught a dude stealing a catalytic converter. Literally in the middle of it because a citizen called it in. They show up, see the guy do it, search his stuff and find all the tools and all the things he's stolen. Arrest him. He's released hours later because of no bond, and CAUGHT AGAIN. By the SAME. POLICE. DEPARTMENT. and again, released on zero bail.
You think a criminal is gonna go mark that court date on a calendar and show up apologizing and ready to repent?
There is literally nothing on the line for people who already have mile long records and aren't intimidated by the idea of a little jail time.

Anything of value at my Walmart is behind a locked panel. I refuse to find an employee to buy those items. I just go elsewhere.

San Francisco used to be known for having a Walgreens in every corner - multiple stores have now shut down due to rampant shoplifting.

The Target stores more in the inner city areas here have always had off duty cops posted by the doors so that’s nothing new. Out here in the burbs by me, it’s all just security cameras everywhere.

He gets in trouble if his theft is too high...but also he gets in trouble if he locks things up because the home office doesn't want people to just go elsewhere.

I guess whatever is popular to steal is locked up. But, they’ve been locked up pre-Covid, so it is not a recent thing here. I don’t know about other stores. Shoplifting is not mentioned in the news.

A friend worked at TJ Maxx a few years ago and it was common for people to load up a cart and open the back door and start filling up a car. The employees are told to do nothing. They can't even follow someone who they think is stealing. I think more and more thieves are aware this policy exists and are taking advantage of it. I was recently at Target when it happened right in front of me. The workers came over and shut the door and turned off the alarm like it was just another day...

I haven’t heard of an overall increase in shop lifting generally but there is an uptick in shoplifting food. I assume it’s a symptom of the pandemic/unemployment issues that many are facing.

Our CVS has those security things on Tide! We don't seem to have more shoplifting than normal that I've heard about. Our neighborhood website said that some cars have been "broken" in too. Unlocked cars.

DD works at a shoe store and finds the empty shoe boxes. No one leaves old shoes, they just load up on new shoes. It is awful.

bianca42 I understand why they do it, but trying to find someone to get it isn’t worth waiting around. I also don’t purchase anything from the makeup section now that you have to pay there separately. It’s easier to drive 5 miles farther into the suburbs where nothing is locked up.

My dd works at Home Goods. EVERY DAY someone is walking out with bags of stuff.
They are told they can do NOTHING about it.
So sad and disgusting!

I don't know but I was shocked to hear that a little eatery nearby with a tip jar has had the tip jar emptied by thieves several times. I mean there is like less than $10 in there and people come in and reach over the counter and steal the contents. You have to be hard up to target a little eatery for $10 in tips. It upset me because this place is barely hanging on with the pandemic and hardly anyone dines in to leave a tip, so the thieves are stealing from those who can least afford it.

It’s amazing all the things that are locked up at our Walmart. All cosmetics are in a separate area and you must pay before you leave the area and there are cameras everywhere. DVDs are locked up, electric toothbrushes and it’s just crazy. They also changed the hours. It used to be 24 hours but they close at midnight and reopen at 6 as there was too much theft at night. They lose hundreds of thousands of dollars to theft. Not sure but that may just in the electronics section. Everything back there is now locked up including batteries. It makes shopping a pain. Now this was several years ago and I can’t imagine theft has stopped people have just changed what they are stealing. I have seen people walk right through the self checkout and out the door while the checker at the door tells him to have a good day but checks someone else’s receipt- his hands were full snd I was still checking out while watching this. I think they have gotten stricter now but it’s insane. I can’t imagine having the guts to try and of course I know better

My local grocery store closed down one of the 2 entrances/exits from the store. I thought they were doing it to control capacity. Nope too many people stealing. It’s easier to monitor with just one door. I was there one day when someone tried to take a bunch of stuff...

In my local WM last week one of the cashiers said currently on the list of their most shoplifted items are the Pioneer Women knives. Individual ones and sets with a block. Sure enough, they all have chains and locks around them.

So many of you say the store can't do anything. Help me understand this (I don't live in the US). Is it fear of confrontation, they might have a gun which puts other shoppers at risk? Can security not ask for proof of purchase at the door?

Can security not ask for proof of purchase at the door? It has to do with the liability of having an employee, customer or even the thief injured during pursuit or being sued for profiling. Also, shoplifting is treated as a misdemeanor if it’s under $950 so our county doesn’t even bother with prosecuting.

I know the local Bed Bath and Beyond is having an issue with stealing. When I was there a regular shoplifter walked into the stock room, got something and walked out. Manager told customer near me they couldn't do anything.
We have had so many issues with people stealing at one of our booths we had to put in a camera. It has slowed.
