I had my wisdom teeth out when I was younger but there was one that was laying on a nerve so they left it. Well now, 30 something years later I’m having issues with it and it has to come out. I want to be knocked out since I hate dental work! But I’m wondering if I’m being ridiculous getting knocked out for one tooth. I have never had a tooth pulled so I’m not familiar with the pressure they say you feel. Anyone have a wisdom tooth out without being knocked out?

The dentist will determine if its impacted or difficult to remove. I had one removed easily with regular numbing. Didn't feel a thing, didn't even realize it was out.

It’s not ridiculous to get knocked out. Especially since you have extenuating nerve issues. You’ll only be under for like 5-10 minutes. I was under IV sedation for my wisdom teeth removal. I have a high tolerance to numbing stuff and tend to still feel things so that was a big part of my reason.

I was knocked out for wisdom teeth since one of my teeth was completely sideways and the numbing stuff has zero effect on me. I had a tooth taken out (one that was cracked when one of the wisdom teeth came in) without being knocked out and wouldn't say you are being ridiculous at all! If given the choice I would be knocked out for all dental and doctor visits. If your doctor is willing and you have no reasons for not being knocked out, go for it.

I don't think it's ridiculous but I'm a skittish patient for anything, so I can guarantee it's better that I'm knocked out no matter how many teeth would be removed. I'm not even as bad as my daughter who is a "fainter" and has had multiple low blood pressure incidents related to things as simple as getting a vaccine. And she planned to be a doctor until it was obvious it was going to cause some issues for her. This should be your choice knowing your history and comfort level.

I was knocked out to have mine removed. NO FOOD for so many hours before they do it.

My recollection is that it wasn't an option for me to NOT be knocked out. Of course, I was 16 and had all four out at once. I recall having pills to take. I remember getting in the dentist's chair... and I remember being in the car coming home. Nothing in between.
I'd had other extractions--I had four premolars removed because they didn't fit my mouth-- but they just took those with novocaine.

I had mine pulled - 1 during my 1st pregnancy and thenn 3 later - with only local...not reccommended but my insurance didn't cover sedation and I couldn't afford. I had sedation last year when I had 4 teeth pulled (3 molars) and it was SOOO much better.

I had a upper one pulled about 15-20 years ago without sedation. It came out very easy.
The lower one started to give me problems this year & I had it pulled in late October with sedation. Apparently the lower jaw is more problematic. Had to get a clean COVID test a few days before & then no eating. Had about 1-2 days of pain but all fine now.
The other 2 are fine for now.

It’s not ridiculous to be knocked out. Don’t feel weird about that.
I had three wisdom teeth done at one time. I was not knocked out. Two were easy and one was difficult. It was a wrestling match between the dentist and that tooth. I was quite phobic about it so he gave me a Vicodin ahead of time and it helped tremendously. Some years later I had the fourth wisdom tooth removed by an oral surgeon. Also, a difficult one and still not knocked out. And no Vicodin. I felt less phobic this time around and got through it without being upset. I will also add that DD has learned that it would be best for her to be knocked out for any future invasive dental work and that’s totally fine.

I had all 4 of mine taken out at the same time when I was 17. My mom was afraid of the anesthesia, so I was awake for the whole thing. One was growing partially sideways and they had to break a bit of my jawbone to get it out. The worst part for me was the crunching noises... not the pressure.

My brother had the same thing. Over many years, the root wound round and round, causing a lot of pain and infections. He finally got it removed but had to go to a specialist for it.

I got mine removed in the late 1970s. No knocking out wisdom tooth removals back then. Just regular freezing.

I had my top two removed about 3 yrs ago. I choose to get knocked out. They fully erupted in my 20s but due to location and angle they were starting to get cavities and the dentist could not access them to do a filling. As I have gotten older I am more anxious about dental work so I chose to take the easy route.
I still have my bottom two wisdom teeth and they are totally fine. Every dentist I have seen has tried to get me to remove all of them but never could give me a good reason why, until this happened.

I can't remember if I had all of mine done at once, or in pairs, but I was awake for it. Novocaine and gas, because without the gas I would jump out of the chair and run away. I preferred to be awake, is your dentist recommending one over the other?

Check your insurance policy to see what's covered, and if not, determine the price and decide if it's worth your comfort. You are the driver in the dental chair.

Thanks everyone! I’m nervous to be sedated but also nervous to be awake for it. Never had a tooth pulled so I have no clue what I am in for.

Stick to your demand for sedation. I did it for my last 2 wisdom teeth. I did have to pay out of pocket, at about $150. It was worth every penny.
It's a very light sedation. You will be able to respond to instructions, but won't remember a thing.

Best of luck with whatever you decide. I'm going to bet when it's all over you will remember the whole thing as not being nearly as bad as your head led you to believe it would be.
I find it interesting how many of us had our wisdom teeth out later in life. Everyone I know had it done in their teens. I was told in My early 20s that I had no wisdom teeth. My first wisdom tooth showed up in my mid 30s on the bottom. It's root had tangled with the tooth root next to it. They put me under because the tooth was way down in there and upside down. They said I had no others. Mid 40s brought the other bottom one to light and it was an easy removal. It is still being maintained that there are no top ones.

I had a permanent tooth pulled as a child and it was traumatizing.
I went under at 25 to get 3 wisdom teeth and one regular tooth cut out.
I have one wisdom left in my mouth and if they ever want to pull it they will have to put me out. I can’t handle the sounds of a pulling of a tooth. It’s awful.

I attempted to have 2 pulled without being totally knocked out and I absolutely freaked out. The pressure, the sounds, etc... it seriously was so horrible they had to stop and then go back the next day and they put me under. I avoid the dentist to this day it was so traumatic. I realize I’m sounding extreme, but I did give birth to 3 kids without pain medicine, so it wasn’t the pain, just the experience.

Well, I’ve had all my teeth pulled, some with sedation, most not.
I’ll tell you flat out, if you feel you need sedated, do it. It’s a weird experience and tensing up won’t help you a bit.

I had sedation for 1 wisdom tooth removal because the tooth was impacted and 1 taken out with local anaesthetic only. I couldn’t feel any pain during the removal of the 2nd tooth but could feel it being pulled out which felt quite strange - guess that’s the pressure you mentioned. I agree that if you think you need the general anaesthetic you should ask for it. Generally I’d also prefer to be sedated.

Thinking I’m going to do the sedation. The dentist freaks me out to begin with so having a tooth pulled won’t be fun. If it was my regular dentist I’d be ok but this is a surgeon I’ve never had before so better not chance it. Thanks everyone!
