And by this I mean fiction and non fiction?
I love to read but need to read more non fiction and more serious fiction. Reading is an escape so I tend to read very fluffy romance/suspence etc. And I read several books a month at least. But I also want to read other stuff to improve my knowledge of the world, history, current events etc. But while I can read light fiction quickly, the heavier stuff takes me much longer if I want to process it properly. So then I start and even though I'm enjoying it, I stop because I want to read the fun stuff.
I've never tried to read both serious and fun works at the same time. I think I'm going to try it. Has anyone else and how does it work for you?

Yes that is exactly what I do. I find it easier and more enjoyable to read 2-3 books at a time. Usually a fiction and something non fiction that takes me longer to get through. My most recent non fiction was King Leopold’s Ghost - about Belgium’s horrific genocide in the Congo.

I can "read" 3 books at the same time provided I use a different medium- I can read an actual book, a book on Kindle and I can listen to an Audio book. I cannot read 2 on the kindle or listen to 2 on audio. I think the different mediums allow my brain to keep the books separate. Although I have done 3 - I do usually keep it to 2, one that I read and one that I listen to.

Oh my mom was an David reader and did this all the time. She would always have this HUGE stack of book from the library.
I can’t do that. I can’t drink coffee and walk the dog either.

I listen to one book on Audible while walking and running with the dogs each day and read another book on Kindle at night. I’ve been doing this for years.

Nope, I usually just read one at a time, plus my concentration has been iffy during the pandemic.

Yup, I usually do 2 at a time, and rarely 3. One upstairs, one downstairs usually, but I'm also reading Obama's book and it is simply so long I cannot read it all at once.
When I get closer to the end of a book, I will bring the book wherever I need to be since I want to finish it.
I am amazed at those who can listen to books. I know a lot of people like that, but my mind wanders too much. When I read the words, I am lost in the world. Not the same for listening.

yup.
I don't have the attention span to get through a long, very serious non-fiction book without taking breaks and reading other things in between, or at the same time. A few months ago I started a very long/thorough three-part biography of Theodore Roosevelt (it has footnotes, appendices, the whole 9 yards...). But I can only read a few pages of it at a time, because I'm constantly stopping to look things up, flip back to the footnotes, etc. So I read other lighter/fluffier books in between.
I like the content and the knowledge I'm getting by reading the non-fiction books; it's just that my brain can't handle too much of it at once. (I am also a person who re-reads books, too-- so I might re-read a classic; that doesn't take nearly as much brain power as reading a new-to-me long fiction novel.)
Right now I'm re-reading Farmer Boy by Laura Ingalls Wilder and I have a couple non-fiction books going-- the Theodore Roosevelt biography, a book of essays about nature and canoeing in Canada, and I think I also started an Anthony Bourdain book in there somewhere.
eta: for me, they're all 'real' books. I don't regularly read electronic books on my iPad.

I have 3 Kindles and read them all concurrently. Each one is in a different room so I always have one to hand!

Yes, I have real books to read at home, and at least 2 on the go on my phone at any time to read when I'm on my work break. They are mostly fiction but not always.

Usually I am one book at a time.
This past week though, I was notified that it was my turn for an ebook about mixed media journals. Normally I would finish one book before starting another, but I couldn't wait to read the mixed media book. So I read both. My fiction book I read prior to going to sleep. So I read through the mixed media book in the early afternoon.

I tried reading two books at once.
It didn't go well.
I kept wondering what happened to a character and then realized that character was in the other book!

I do from time to time..usually if I HAVE to read xxx by a deadline. But, I put one aside and finish the one that is on a timeline. I could manage both, but the NF will often be put aside while I read the fluff.
Sometimes after reading NF for awhile, I will then deliberately read FIC just to let my mind enjoy rather than concentrate.

I am amazed at those who can listen to books. I know a lot of people like that, but my mind wanders too much. When I read the words, I am lost in the world. Not the same for listening. I can only listen to certain books. They have to be fairly simple or more so can't have too many characters. I don't like bouncing timelines in audio. Biographies are also good, I usually find them too boring to read but are easy to listen to and keep track of. I find listening with headphones can be better than a speaker since the voice is right in your ears it forces you to listen and not let your mind wander. I thought maybe I'd get better at listening to them if I started this way and could listen to more complicated ones but I'm not getting any better and am getting tired of listening to so many light beachy reads. So now I only listen to one if it really appeals to me other wise I've gone back to listening to podcasts. I always have a fiction book going and I can have an audio or non fiction if I choose. I would read a non fiction very slowly so I'd need a more interesting fiction book to pick up inbetween. Or I'll have an audio book going while doing things around the house.

I'm mostly a fluffy reader.. lol...I don't want to THINK about it.. just enjoy...
I can read two books at the same time.. but only different kinds... a fluff and usually an autobiography.... that's it.. otherwise it is just one fluff or one serious book..

I often read more than one book at a time, last night I finished up two of the five books I had on the go. It definitely helps to have subjects that are quite different so you don't play the "what was happening in this book?" game every time you try to pick it back up, and I often read a mix of fiction and non fiction at the same time.

It's funny you say that because I almost exclusively listen to books. I just don't have the brain power/concentration to read after a day of work. In response to the OP, I only do one book at a time. See concentration issue up above.

I can read 2 or 3 nonfictions books at the same time without a problem, but only one fiction book at a time along with them.
This has really been my pattern since high school and college when having multiple books on the go was just part of life.

I juggle maybe 3-4 books at the same time. It doesn't matter what kind. I don't listen to books or use a kindle.. (my dh got me one and I had to return it) I am a fast reader. I do read on my phone.

I try not to have more than three.. but currently have one on my Kindle but I haven't started it yet, one audio (for when I'm using the treadmill) I'm about 10% into, and a few physical books in some state of progress on my nightstand. All fiction at the moment, but not always. My last audio book was non-fiction.

I usually have 3 books going. A fiction book and a non-fiction book and then a YA book with my DD. The YA is almost always an audiobook that we listen to in the car while running errands or driving back and forth from dance.

Sometimes I have an audio book and a different kindle ebook going at the same time, but not super often. Once I start a book I usually am all in until it’s done.

yes - I usually have 2-3 books going at a time (one light fiction, one historical fiction, and one non-fiction history or biography usually) - plus the read-aloud I'm doing with DD14 (right now we're reading the Diary of Anne Frank as well as George Washington's World)

Sometimes I will read a chapter or a certain number of pages in the nonfiction book, then some of the fiction. Sometimes I will read 25% or whatever goal of the nonfiction book, then read a fiction book, then back to the nonfiction book, etc. It has worked for me.

I read several at a time. I have my current main read - usually, though not always, fiction. I also read a spiritual book in the morning, a non-fiction in the downstairs bath, a non-fiction while I brush my teeth, and a chapter or so of a classic in the morning.
