I've realized I spend way too much time on the internet reading stupid stuff (crap) and checking emails (not important). Anyone give it up? How?

I have no problem going camping or on vacation in the mountains and walking away. but I use it to manage work and organize my life otherwise so I love having it.

I'm doing the SAHM scene and miss the responsibility of doing tasks of my previous job (scientist). As a relief to down town, I find myself on the internet too much and can't "step away".

I blame my smart phone. It is way too easy to scroll thru Facebook, instantly answer that email, peruse instagram or interest...I swear I have the damn thing attached to my hand all day.
I have no desire to give it up, though I recognize it isn't good for me probably. Kind of like beer, lol.

I'm typically ok more when dh works. There isn't any adt conversation moat nights because he is gone, so I talk vicariously through the Internet

One thing that helps is cutting down the amount of junk mail you get in your email. You hear the alert, or see a number of emails waiting, and you can waste all day looking at that. Stores are the worst. If you don't shop at those stores much, unsubscribe or send it all to a junk folder and only look at that once a day or once a week. Usually, the coupons you're getting emailed are exactly the same on the site, so if you're shopping there, check out the site (or your junk folder) at that time.
Plug in your phone and walk away. You're a SAHM to be with your kids, not to be with your phone.
Once you get into a different routine, it's pretty easy!

I was just thinking that tonight. While I love the Internet and wouldn't want to give it up completely, I do need to cut back. I waste so much time that I could be doing something else like cleaning, catching up on paperwork, parenting more effectively, etc. All things that would help me to feel less stressed with my life right now. I would also like to read and craft more often, which I think would increase without so much internet time as well.

In august for about two weeks I just quit. I got angry about stupid snarky comments about Tony and I just quit. I turned off my iPad and never sat at my computer. Used my cell as a phone and text though, but deleted all games and apps. I was doing really well until my mom landed in the ER with pneumonia and it was a really really long night. I needed support.

I have the same issues - its the first thing I do when I wake up in the morning and everyone else still sleeping. I check mail, FB and Instagram - or the forums. I hardly read blogs anymore, maybe once a week. But I still feel I need to cut back. I had to do the same with the radio in my car - instead of Talk radio we now listen to classical music, because I can switch that off and listen to my kids instead of being sucked in to some conversation. Worried about the example I set for them - so many people get distracted by their phones - even in the middle of a conversation ! So not getting my kids a smart phone for years to come ! Shame - poor them !

I go through periods where I don't get on our desktop and just do a few of my favorites on my smartphone, but give up everything completely? Nope, not a chance. Melissa

Yeah, I think about it sometimes, then remember I'm chronically ill and spend 95% of the 138 hours a week I'm not at work, at home on my own. And I don't have/watch TV. So it's my connection to world.
Things that do help though - I don't have internet at home - only the data plan on my phone (4gb a month) and for some reason needing to connect through my phone and knowing how much data I use in one hit means I barely turn my laptop on.
I do use audiobooks to fill some of the gaps and on the days the net is infuriatingly slow I actually have plenty of other things to do. The internet is just my default. Maybe I just need to break that habit rather that cut it off completely.
I don't suppose you can turn down the speed of your connection somehow. I imagine if you try and do things at dial up speed you'll get over it pretty quickly, but the access is still there if you need it for something important.

I have tried to unsubscribe from at least a dozen companies yet still the emails come. I know I could do the junk folder but I'd rather get rid of them altogether - if I only could!!

I've got at least one company who, when I unsubscribe, sends a 'sorry to see you go' email - then soon after I get another email saying 'welcome back, we thought you would want to know about this very special offer'!! I will win this battle, one day....!!

Honestly? I don't really understand the point of walking away from the internet. Doing that you walk away from a lot more than just a message board. I'm not interested in cutting off my nose to spit my face and the internet is much too valuable in my day to day life to cut it out. I see no need to cut myself off from the world.
I also don't consider my internet use an addiction and don't really like using the term addiction so lightly. But that's my personal issue with the word so I don't know why I brought it up.

I know I could do the junk folder but I'd rather get rid of them altogether - if I only could!! I had problems with unsubscribing from The Children's Place emails. I finally emailed customer service and they listened and took me off of their list. From now on I'm going to email customer service to unsubscribe from emails I don't want. I need to cut back on my Internet usage too. I could get so much more done.

I hear you. I could have gotten a lot more done yesterday if I had just stayed off it. Since most of it was not really important to my life, you'd think I would have an easier time resisting the urge to go online.

Yes, I definitely think I piss too much time away on the internet. My ADD tendencies surely factor into it. If I'm bored with a project I'm working on at home my brain goes to "Hmm I wonder if so-and-so replied to my email." So I'll sign on just to check my email and before I know it a half hour has gone by and I've caught up on Facebook and this board as well as collected a few more pins on projects "I'm going to do some day." If this only happened once or twice a day it would be ok but that isn't the case. One thing that really helps is when I'll tell myself that I will absolutely stay off the internet for x number of hours. At first it's pure torture, but then I actually start really enjoying whatever other activity I'm doing. I'll then reward myself with a short break on the internet and find myself wanting to go do something productive again -- the successes build on each other. At the end of the day it feels so good to see all I've been able to accomplish because I was able to be disciplined and not give in to internet distraction. And with that I hereby declare that I will not get on the internet for 3 hours.

To help with emails I use Unroll.me You choose what emails you want to be rolled into one email. So first thing in the morning I get all the emails from stores, google alerts, and other random emails in one email.
When you first set it up you go through and decide which you want rolled up, which you want to come to your inbox, I have things like school emails, bank emails still coming in, and which you want to unsubscribe too.
I then go back and do this like once every couple of months it really helps keep it under control.
We try and keep 6 to 8 screen free in our house and Sunday mornings.
Doesn't always work, but we try.

I was just complaining about this same thing to my DH the other day. I waste way too much time on this thing and wish I could pry myself away. I know it's just a distraction, but still, it feels very unhealthy sometimes.
ETA: Now that the holidays are around the corner, I know I'll be on here even more, because I do a lot of my shopping online....ughhh!

No, but I periodically delete my games from my phone. I get a bit obsessive with word scramble, etc. TO the point, where I see scrambled words when I close my eyes to sleep at night.

I give myself specific times I'm allowed to be online. If it's not one of those times, I'm off. I really do have to police myself like that or I'd sit here all day.
