I know there'll be hormonal changes and all that, but I've been having my period every three weeks (one week on, two weeks off) when I used to be a "starts every thirty days and lasts three days" kind of gal.
This is freakin' annoying! The only good part is that I'm a total and complete bitch the day it starts but then I'm fine - no cramps or moodiness versus the three-fours days of intense cramping and three-four days of post-period bitchiness I used to have.
I do have an appointment with my gynecologist, but you know I've gotta ask the all-knowing here! I'm almost 41, not on any medication that would alter my cycle - could this be the start of the end of almost three decades of periods??

I can't speak to your symptoms because my doctors have told me I'm breezing through menopause with virtually no side effects or challenges. I figure that's life's gift for being a late bloomer and never getting past an A cup at Victoria's Secret at that.
But I will say that I hear you on hoping for menopause. It became a goal of mine after my first period. Those were a long 35 years, let me tell you.

At 42, I quite literally pray every day for it to come quickly. I'm so done with the stupidness.

And that is why I am so happy I had a hysterectomy at age 36!! I do still have an ovary, so I have not done the hormonal change yet, but I am so happy I do not have to worry about the period part!

I'm sure it is. But you say "hormonal changes and all that" like it'll be easy.......

menopause is no walk in the park either. no more periods is the best of it but there could be a new set of symptoms you could experience. the grass isn't always greener. I had problems with my periods until I had a hysterectomy at 45. no more periods, great. hot flashes and other TMI stuff, not so great.

No, it's not crazy at all! I still have my ovaries so technically I'm not in menopause, but not dealing with the monthly issues after my hyst is one of the things I'm most grateful for!

a couple years ago my periods started getting further apart. I was secretly cheering. My gyno on the other hand said I was too young for menopause (I'm 45) and gave me some meds to get my period back on schedule. sigh. So, my periods became regular and what I called "what normal ppl experience" (3 days, not a lot of cramps, mild PMS). The downside? I pretty much was suicidal during my period. took me several months to figure it out. I went cold turkey and everything immediately went back to my suck periods (but regular). My mom can't remember when she went through menopause but I think it had to be close to my age because she said "I don't remember but it took me 10 years to get through it all". She was about 67 when I asked. My sister is 50. I'm going to ask her if she's stopped yet.
My husband hates my period, but on the other hand he's terrified of me going through menopause. LOL

Have no answer to your question, but right there with you. Mine last longer and are closer together than they were. Thankfully more like 25-26 days apart. Last night I was thinking i'm at day 28 and don't have so maybe i'll skip one...but that didn't happen. I'm 46 btw, but like you can't wait to be done!

Like papersilly said, menopause is no walk in the park. Hot flashes seem to be my worse nightmare! I am so tired of waking up in the middle of the night drenched with sweat and shivering.
Maybe your doctor will put you on a mild type of BC to help with the heavy periods. Won't hurt to ask.

I'm almost 52, regular as clockwork, my baby is 26 years old. This crap can go away any time. Mom figured she was about 56, shoot me now.

I was experiencing pretty severe periods and for the first time in my life anemia about a year ago. My gynecologist discussed ablation, hysterectomy, and BC pills. I ended up deciding to try BC pills - it's a very low dose pill. It's been extremely beneficial for me. I have very light to non-existent periods. With my health history, my doctor is comfortable keeping me on them for a few years to ease the transition into menopause.

Be careful what you wish for. This can be a piece of cake or an experience that is a major challenge.

I went into medical menopause at 43. it was horrific. I'm lucky I didn't kill myself or anyone else or get fired or divorced. paranoia, crazy mood swings, no libido, could not focus, ran stop sign because I couldn't concentrate when driving. Prempro saved my life. I miss my libido the most.

I think those of you that are in your 40s, and not really having any bad symptoms, are having wishful thinking. Unless you are like really bleeding, pain, etc..they arn't doing to do anything, but like someone else said, put you on a med to get you better regulated. I'm 50. I am as regular as ever. I had some break-thru bleeding a few yrs ago, and they put me on progesterone for 3 mo's, got it back to normal, and have been good ever since. I don't even think I'm close. UGH.

Two words: endometrial ablation. Had one four years ago and it was the best thing ever. GYN put me on the Pill before I had the ablation (DH had a vasectomy years ago) to try to help things, but the side effects were horrible. The ablation has been a Godsend. Hoping it carries me to menopause. I'll be 43 in a few months.

Well I am 51 and have a period every other month. Before it was every 3 weeks but I am tired of it. I haven't had much to speak of in the way of hot flashes or bitchiness..but I do exercise 4 times a week minimum for an hour and I really do believe that helps.
Be advised though with menopause you can expect
Headaches Hair becomes thinner and duller Heart Palpitations Droopy and Flatter Boobs Backaches Dry Skin Facial Hair Abdomen muscles lose tone Weight Gain Vaginal Dryness and Itching Bones loose mass and become more fragile Leaky Bladder or Stress Incontinence
Now menopause doesn't sound very appealing.

The biopsy he had to do yesterday about made me pass out...it felt like he had a bottle brush in my uterus.

I'm on a low-dose birth control regimen to help with my heavy, painful periods. This is the 3rd month I've been on them, and it's not been bad. I still have some mild cramping, but my periods last month and the month before were very light and lasted 3 days. This month I'm several days late, but when I talked to my doctor, she said it was normal until my body gets used to the meds.
The bc I'm taking is called Lo-Loestrin.

Everyone is different, but for me menopause has been a horrible. I can't wait for it to be over! It's been two years of hell so far. I'm hot flashing every 20 minutes (literally-I can time it), and obviosly it's effecting my sleep. I'm afraid to take the normal HRT (hormone replacement therapy) due to the cancer risk and I've even tried the new bio-identical version (that doesn't give you cancer) but all it did was make my migraines 100 times worse. So I'm stuck. I'm at the point now where I'm going to beg my doctor for help and ask his advice on what to do next, because I just can't go on like this.
I haven't gained any weight but that's because I changed my diet and went totally healthy a couple of years ago. I have noticed an incredible amount of bitchiness returning though once I stopped taking Cymbalta which contained my moods completely. It was time to stop-but the bitchiness is being caused by the lack of estrogen and it's hard on my husband.
So my answer is...hell yes!

My current period is only on day 8 or 9 but man, heavy doesn't come close. Some days I feel I'm taking a risk leaving the house then it slows down then, hey, right back to full crime scene status. It's not fun. As far as other symptoms I seem to have one at a time, but full on, be it hot flushes, heart palpitations.......but there's the ever present lack of concentration, the weight gain....I could go on

53 and waiting. I think I'm getting mild hot flashes but who can tell with blankets and all on the bed. I could just be bundling up. I'm ready.

My doctor told me further apart is fine but if I have them closer together on a regular basis to let him know. So far mine are almost always about 30 days but I'm ready for them to stop. It lasts about 9-10 days every time and I'm way past being over it.

Be careful what you wish for.
I have bad hot flashes almost all day and night.
Weight gain just looking at food.
Restlesness and irritability
Difficulty sleeping a lot of nights.
Knowing what I know now, I would take back the monthly periods. Mine weren't so bad in my younger years....the last couple of years prior to menopause there were some pretty bad months, but that's normal.

I had one too and I normally have a high threshold for pain but that caught me off guard. The ablation was a piece of cake. I took it easy the day of and the next day went back to normal activity. My very last period was 6 months after I turned 50. I was thrilled it was finally over! I feel great, no more hormonal up's and downs, no more cramps - done! I have occasional night embers (especially if I have red wine, which raises estrogen levels) but other than that life is good!
