DH and I got our first covid vaccination yesterday afternoon, and after reading how much trouble some Peas are having getting an appointment I was actually hesitant to post.
I couldn't believe how many slots were available. On Tuesday morning while having my coffee and reading the Peaboard I decided that I should see if there were any appointments available.
I opened my Kroger app, used the eligibility feature and chose my location and within 15 minutes I had both DH and my appointment set for yesterday and got our second doses scheduled as well. I could have even gotten an appointment on Tuesday afternoon if I wanted to.
It amazing how many doses are expiring or going bad without being used. Many people I know have gotten their vaccination because they were near the pharmacy at Walmart or Kroger in the late afternoon and they were offered the vaccine because they had no-shows and doses leftover.
Today there was a pop-up vaccine clinic in one area of town and they got 1250 people vaccinated.
I am not sure why there are so many appointments available in this area when other states are having trouble meeting the demand. Maybe because this is a red part of the country there are fewer people wanting the vaccine. I can't imagine Mississippi and Tennessee being more efficient than other states, LOL
Whatever the reason for the ease of getting vaccinated, I am not going to complain. Except for whining about how sore my arm is.
Anyone who wants to take a road trip to get shot, there are plenty of doses here.
I really feel for those Peas who are struggling to get an appointment. I really thought I wouldn't be able to get mine until May or later.

Are you in Mississippi? That’s where we are and my son had no trouble getting an appointment, either. I never dreamed it would be as easy as it was.

Don't feel bad. Better you should get the vaccine than have it go to waste.

craftedbys no reason to feel guilty. You registered, they accepted you, you got the shot. The more people who get vaccinated the better for all of us!

Everyone who gets vaccinated is a step closer to herd immunity so don't feel guilty. I got a 'no show' or otherwise leftover dose. I'm in a very 'red' part of my state as well. Most people I know are getting it but I know some (all white males) who are hesitant or downright insistent they aren't getting vaccinated.

I am right on the border of Mississippi and Tennessee. As in our house is less than a half mile from the state line. People have been getting their vaccine in either state, wherever they get their appointment slot. The Kroger I went to in Mississippi is closer to me than the closest one in Tennessee. It was nice to have six different pharmacies nearby to choose from.

My son's fiancé texted me at 8 this morning. She had found a vaccine for me. I got online and signed up. I feel extremely lucky since they just opened my age bracket up yesterday. I got the confirmation email 12 hours later and I printed it out and feel like Charlie getting the golden ticket.
There is a large venue down the street from us that is going to do 6,000 shots a day in the parking lot. I was gearing up for that. My name was on their list. Much prefer to walk into a Walgreens with an appointment time.

Don’t feel guilty at all I would get one if offered to. As soon as I’m eligible I will start looking. I wish it was easy for everyone - haven’t heard many good things about our county. I keep hoping that Kaiser will get enough snd start vaccinating more. They are still only doing healthcare and over 65 in our county. The county sites have added some preexisting conditions but not as many as surrounding counties. I’m just trying to be patient as I know that there are a lot that should get theirs before being offered to the rest of us. Everyone that gets it though helps the rest of us.

I know how you feel, craftedbys. Bergdorfblond and I live in the same state. She struggled and struggled to get their shots where my Dr called me to come to her clinic. I felt so guilty and so sad I couldn't have my shot packaged up and sent to her.

I found it difficult to see where there were appointments when I had to look online but I made a call to our state department of health services because I was willing to go to the next county for my vax, and they use the DHS system (the county I live in does not.) I qualify as of Monday and had my choice of at least two days and several appointments. I went from feeling like I was not going to be able to score a time to feeling like “that was a lot easier than I thought it would be.” I had been hearing things like check at 11 at night for this site, 6 am for that one, etc. I called Friday afternoon late and am getting my dose on Wednesday. I hadn’t seen any appointments online for the location I am getting my shot at.
I don’t feel guilty, though I do feel bad for people who can’t get them yet. A friend of mine was literally in the chair with her sleeve rolled up when they realized that due to another vaccines she had received just days prior they couldn’t give her her Covid one. But I am encouraging my friends who were told they wouldn’t get theirs through their clinic or employer for weeks yet, even though they are eligible, to think outside the box. Look for places that may have leftover doses at the end of a day, look beyond their city or zip code (a friend who was convinced he would never get an appointment fat fingered his zip code and was able to score an appointment across town, for example), that kind of thing. My brother was able to get his by going to the next county over, which is also what I am doing.

Your post is basically the same as the one I made a couple of days ago. Based on what I read on this board I thought it would be so hard to get an appointment. It wasn't. Everywhere had tons of times available every day. I was able to make my second dose appointment the same I made the first appointment. Everything was just really smooth and easy which made me feel terrible because so many peas are having such a hard time.
In the end, I think the vaccine is probably not really in demand where I am (lots of people here are still against mask wearing) and that probably contributed a lot to my experience.

No need to feel guilty. If the appointments are available someone should fill them. In my state the age limit has been lifted to anyone over 18.

My very healthy 27-year-old son in rural Georgia has had his first shot, and he felt the same way. But down where he is there is a much lower demand for the vaccine than there is up here in Northern Virginia. When he went online to schedule it he said he was able to look at the screen of available time slots and talk to his fiancée about which one to take. Up here you have to refresh and refresh and refresh the screen and then IF you see a free slot you grab it, and then arrange your life later to accommodate it... no time to discuss options, you just take whatever you can get.

No one should feel guilty about getting a vaccine... People should feel guilty for not getting it when it's available to them. I had to work hard for one. But I celebrate everyone who gets one. I care about you girls and I want you all protected. I thank God we haven't lost a pea to covid.

Iwas working at a clinic and found out they were calling people at the end of the night to try and use unclaimed doses. They wanted. People who could get there quickly. I asked if they had to be in the current category and was told no, they would rather it not be thrown out. Dd, 18, was able to get her first dose! That I do feel slightly guilty about....

Don't feel guilty! If you are eligible, get it, especially if there are a lot of open spaces. I thought I would have been vacinnated by now. I am in the last category, but I figures living in Trump area, no one would want vaccines. But I am happy that people are getting vaccines.
I have no computer skills, and don't have the time to spend all day trying. So I will get mine when it's easy. My 2 kids 21 and 23 are in health fields (nursing school) and have been vacinated. My husband got his first dose (bmi of 33 so eligible). My 17 yr. old had covid in Nov. and is in the last group.

We were able to get our 18 year old daughter vaccinated at a pop-up vaccination site. It was open for all and at the time we scheduled her there were many open slots. We did feel king of funny about it, but I also felt funny about it when I was able to get a vaccination before my 79 year old dad. By getting vaccinated we are all doing our part.

Good for you! DD and I will be eligible in MI starting tomorrow. I have registered myself, dd and dh with the health department and Meijer. DD and I are also patients/employees at the University of Michigan, so the two of us are registered with them. I've also created accounts and am checking Walgreens, CVS and Rite Aid. So far nothing for me, but dd got a call this morning from the health dept and she has an appointment for tomorrow. She came running down the stairs screaming with excitement. Then went to the Starbucks drive through for a celebratory Frauppucino. My goal this week is to find an appointment for me. Then when dh becomes eligible in another week or so, work on him. I wake up a lot at night so hopefully that will be beneficial to me for one time in my life! I feel like I did a few years ago when I was trying to get Disney Fast Passes!

It seems to vary a great deal from state to state. Here in Florida it's still only for certain categories which I MIGHT qualify for (people at extremely high risk). But I got my shot because someone didn't show and hubby is friendly with that pharmacy staff. Then he and our daughter got it the same way. I believe there are 10 shots per vial, and each vial is only good for a short time.
Don't feel guilty. Honestly ANYONE getting the vaccine is doing something good for their community and our nation.

DD 17 and I have appointments this week. I too feel a smidge guilty about it - but vax rates are low here in TN and appointments fairly easy to come by currently. I think what finally got me over it was thinking that if we can do our part to increase the vax rate we will help our local community. DH is taking DD at th end of the day and is hoping there will be a dose “leftover” that he can take. If so, 3/4 members of our family will be fully vaccinated by early May!!

I live in Tennessee and it surprised me at how quickly I was able to get a vaccine time when the state opened up to 1C last week. I got my first Pfizer on the 19th. Felt incredibly blessed to not have any symptoms other than a sore arm.
DD and DH are getting their first shots today at Sam's Club. It was a quick phone call, answer a few questions and they gave you an appt time. I feel guilty but I am so relieved. With all my medical issues, I am terrified that my second time with Covid won't be like the first--just a loss of sense of smell.
A friend was at Myrtle Beach last week and in Walmart. Walmart announced over the PA that they had extra vaccines available if someone wanted one. I wish every one had the ease of getting a vaccine and not having to wait.

I live in Atlanta and it is extremely hard to get an appointment - several people are driving 2 or 3 hours to less populated areas of the state to get one. Fortunately, after a week of trying and several hours spent on the internet seeking one (I just became eligible last Monday), I finally have an appointment scheduled this week. Don't feel guilty at all - I'm glad you & DH were able to get the vaccine. That's great!

I'm your neighbor (North Alabama), and the local rumor is that if you just show up at one of the vaccine distribution places (one of the hospitals), after 3:30pm, they're giving the vaccine to whoever shows up to keep them from going bad. I suspect that we have gotten the same number of vaccines as other states, we just have a large contingent of people who refuse to get it. I'm not going to go hang out at the hospital on the off chance that I might get in to get one, but it's definitely tempting. They just opened up to 55+ here, I suspect it will be another month or so before they get to my age group (43), but I'll sign up as soon as I am allowed.
Don't feel guilty! Every person who is vaccinated gets us that much closer to herd immunity. Hope your arm feels better soon.

I easily got my appointments but I went the County over from me. It took me 1 hour and 15 minutes both times - round trip. It was a drive through clinic and was much easier and quicker than going to the clinic in my county. Most people who go to the clinic in my city say to plan on 2 to 2 1/2 hours. It seems just hard to get appointments in my county along with the time involved.
While I was getting my 2nd shot, I purposely took my DD with me so she could see it was no big deal. I mentioned to the nurse when she asked if she was getting one that my DD didn’t qualify yet. I brought her with me because she is neurologically compromised and I was showing her how it worked. The nurse said they had some available and to drive back around and go into the line of those without their paper work. While I was waiting my 15 minutes in the parking lot, a volunteer came up and gave us all the paperwork and we completed it. He then directed us back into the building where she got her 1st shot.
I am old enough to remember the polio vaccine. We went to the local high school and lined up. Both the small pox and the polio vaccines were not politicalized and everyone got them. Both diseases are basically gone and with small pox, they don’t even immunize anymore. I don’t understand the hesitation. Fear of some stupid conspiracy theory tracking device - your phone, social media, etc tracks you more!

I live in Atlanta and it is extremely hard to get an appointment - several people are driving 2 or 3 hours to less populated areas of the state to get one. My metro is smaller than Atlanta, but this is what some friends and I did a week and a half ago. Apparently there's such low demand in rural areas that they're taking very liberal interpretations of the categories just to get shots used. Though none of us would otherwise have qualified based on age, health factors, etc., we found out they were considering "law enforcement officers" to include attorneys - which we all are. So, we were able to schedule next day (could even have gotten same day if we'd been able to get there in time) appointments at various rural health clinics ranging from 1.5-2.5 hrs away. All of us badly wanted those shots and while we weren't going to lie about who we were to anyone, we also all felt that it's not our position to tell people how to do their job and who they should consider "qualified". As it happens, I got a text Saturday to schedule w/ my health department for a time beginning this week, so I'm really only 2 weeks ahead of where I might have been anyway. But, the way I look at it, 1) better in my arm than in the trash, and 2) as someone with the flexibility and ability to travel for a shot, better for me to do that and save local shots in the metro where they're harder to come by for people who can't easily take an afternoon to drive over the river and through the woods to a more remote location. That there were multiple immediate openings available tells me that I wasn't taking a shot from anyone who lived in that local area and wanted it. And, as many have said, my vaccination helps to protect others as well (though I'll still wear my mask when out and about).
