I'm sorry you're getting stressed over this. My DH has also been getting into a state about being the only family member who is too young to have it yet, and now he's finally eligible and he's dragging his heels over getting it booked. I'm in the UK. Here we began with Pfizer vacs only, 3 weeks apart. Within a few weeks of beginning the program they decided it was better to have more people part-vaccinated than a few people fully covered, and made the decision to delay the second jab to not longer than 12 weeks. So most people, including I, waited 12 weeks between jabs. There was much grumbling because this was untested. Then the stats came out that the first Pfizer jab is far more effective than they first thought (80-90% as opposed to 50-60%) and it became the norm here. All that was to say that if you have the choice of when to book your second Pfizer jab, you can go up to 12 weeks for the second vac if you have important things like exams that you don't want to compromise with side effects. And side effects appear to be more likely with the second than the first. Good luck! ETA: here they're not giving the J&J vac to anyone under 30 in case of blood clots, although the instances are very small.

As long as Pfizer and/or Moderna are administered within 42 days of the first shot, you are okay (this is per the scientists I work with that work on mRNA).

That's great! I am going to call around and ask if we can pick the day or if you can only go on the day they set. It sounds like it depends on the place. Maybe at a pharmacy it's okay but a big clinic that only comes on certain days you have to go on their day. My dh got Pfizer through a mass drive through clinic. They had iPads at each car to schedule after you had the first shot. It was perfect. They said to pick a day the week of whatever... it was so convenient. That sounds so reassuring! Thanks for letting me know!

They make your second appointment for you when you show up for your first. It will be exactly 21 days later (3 weeks) at the same time as your first shot. You don’t get to choose a different appointment time. That is not necessarily true. I did schedule my appointment after I got the first shot, but I wasn’t required to do that and I was given a range of appointment times, they started at exactly 21 days later but I had several options in a several week range.

I just realized there is a Johnson and Johnson vaccine at a clinic an hour away, so that would be perfect! It's on pause right now. Schedule her for Pfizer or Moderna. I would not worry about Prom. I bet she will be fine Oh no! I have the link to sign up for Johnson and Johnson at a clinic for Thurs. and Friday. I thought this would be the good solution because it's just one shot. I thought they said all vaccines were completely safe? Thanks for letting me know. Now I am probably going to just do it the day before prom and hope for the best (unless they are able to let me schedule later for after the prom). No one I know had side effects (many of my friend's parents were vaccinated with no issues) so hopefully she will be good.

My husband and parents didn't have any side effects from the vaccine, so hopefully she won't either. It's better that it's the day before because the past year she has had immediate reactions to vaccines (and flu shot). So she can get the vaccine and then take it easy the rest of the day. Then as long as she has no "normal" side effects the next day she will hopefully be good. Honestly, I'd reschedule her first shot if she hasn't already gotten it.

The toughest part of the role out has been that every state is different and every provider is different. Navigating all the options can be challenging! With grocery store pharmacies, big pharmacies, little pharmacies, big medical providers all implementing their own systems - all with slightly different rules, it can be confusing! You might start to see if your state or county has a mass list of who's offering vaccines in your area. You can also see if this site provides info: www.vaccinespotter.org/Once you know in general who's offering - you can go to each of their sites and see first if vaccines are available, but also how they're scheduling. As previous posters have said, many do an auto appointment (3 weeks later for pfizer) - but that doesn't mean you can't change it - or find a different provider that is offering 2nd dose appointments - just make sure it's the same manufacturer as the first dose. Best of luck to you.

I've heard younger people are likely to have more of a reaction to the shots so I would get the second one after the prom. Walgreens was setting appointments for Pfizer and Moderna 4 weeks apart, but got some flak because they weren't following the CDC guidelines of scheduling Pfizer 3 weeks apart. The guidelines state that you could still get it up to 42 days after, but Walgreens stated that would agree to schedule the second one 3 weeks. Not sure if that has been implemented yet.
With Walgreens, you do need an account set up for each family member you are trying to book and they will offer the second appointment at the same time you book the first. Good luck!

Thanks so much to everyone for the info and tips on getting vaccinated. It is really appreciated! I am happy that you all understand my stress about it. This is the only place I can go to talk about my concerns and not get criticized. Thank you so much for that.
We are going to call the site offering Johnson and Johnson this week. Maybe they are still using the vaccine so it doesn't get wasted. It would be hard to reschedule all those people because it's a big clinic set up.
If they are not allowed to use that vaccine now, I will just have to sign her up for Pfizer and hope for the best. I will ask if they will schedule her second shot after prom, but if they can't we just have to get it. Maybe if she takes enough ibuprofen and keeps up with it she will be good. I am just done with the nagging from family about getting vaccinated. And the appts. are filling up faster than we thought. I am only trying Rite Aid because I am having an easy time with that site. I struggled with some others that I tried.

As I understand it, there are 6 cases in the US of blood clots (out of 6.8 million who got the J&J vaccine) it's literally less than a one in a million chance, but they are being overly cautious and pausing it. You're more likely to be a crushed by a meteorite (1 in 700,000 chance). We chose not to get the j&j because the efficacy is around 65% vs. 94/95% with Moderna and Pfizer.

I would not schedule her right before prom because they have missed so much this year I wouldn't want to chance her feeling bad/headache/ache-y/fever-y during prom. Just let prom be prom without a worry about vaccine side effects. Schedule her for a time after prom, while looking out for those AP testing dates. And as others said, some sites give you a range of dates to schedule the second appt., while others schedule it exactly 3 weeks out. Good luck.

It's interesting to hear how different areas are with scheduling. I was able to get mine through a pharmacy. Vaccines were being snatched up like Beyonce tickets so there wasn't time to decide on dates. If it was open, you grabbed it and worked your schedule around it. One of my kids went to a county run site 2 hours away. Again, not getting to choose the date for the 2nd dose. Another family member went to a county run site an hour away and was given a code to go online and schedule the 2nd dose. They could choose between 3 days. maryland, I'd be happy to give you step by step instructions to set up her (and yours because you have to have separate accounts) for Walgreens. And to help you look at your county to see what options you have. Don't forget to check with your Dr's offices, too. And the hospitals affiliated with your doctors.

Well here in Canada they are spacing shots our four months apart, so apparently either biology and immunity work differently here or timing doesn’t matter? 😹

I had to book my second appointment myself after the first one. As long as it is done in a few weeks of the first one it is fine. It does not have to be a strict 21 or 28 days. If you let it go 4 months or more you might have to start over. But delaying a few days is not a problem.

And haha, the stress is getting to me enough that I am so used to writing 17, but she just turned 18 a last month! So the J&J would have been perfect. The news is saying the blood clots found in those 6 people is not related to the vaccine, so why stop it? We are going with her scheduled first shot and hope that they let her change the date for the second. If not, we will just deal with it. Not worth the stress of the nagging us to get vaccinated. Believe me, I would have waited until June/July to get her vaccinated if it was my choice. She already have covid last year, so I would love if they said one shot was enough.

That is so sweet of you to offer help! I really appreciate it! I did get it scheduled at Rite Aid for both but we are going a couple weeks apart. I didn't want the same time as her because she had had reactions last summer and in Nov. from vaccinations, so I want to be there to help her after hers. Her doctors office doesn't give covid vaccines. I called them last week because I thought she should be at the doctors office in case of reaction. But they said she is fine to get it at a clinic or store. The times filled up in the time between scheduling her and me both. It's the first day for everyone over 16 in the state, so it's busy. Thanks again, so much, for offering to help!

It's not mandatory. So I thought maybe they would still give it. Hopefully they can save the JJ doses and give them soon.

My dd had her first Pfizer at Walgreens and they auto scheduled her for four weeks out.

I had the Pfizer one. While I was sitting in the 15 minute observation area after getting the first one I got an email with scheduling information for the second. I was able to get it any day after the 17th. My appt is the 20th, since that is the first day that they had availability that I had child care. So it doesn't have to be exactly 21 days after the first shot.

I had my first dose of Pfizer through Walgreens and they scheduled the second dose for 4 weeks later, this coming Sunday. Maybe that would work better for your daughter's prom situation. Good luck! Walgreens was supposed to be doing three weeks for the second dose and got a talking to by the CDC. Now their appointments are set up 3 weeks apart. Any older appointments are stuck with the four week time.

maryland if you have a Smith's or Kroeger nearby, they have a super easy appt system and you get to schedule both appts at the same time. No account required to make the appts. You also get to pick from a small range of dates for the 2nd appt. vaccinefinder.org

At one point the cdc was saying up to 2 weeks after the suggested 3 weeks (Pfizer) or 4 weeks (Moderna) is fine.
Because of scheduling, I had my two Moderna shots exactly 6 weeks apart. I called our 211 number in our state to verify this was okay and they said yes.

What they are doing and say they are able to do is giving those scheduled for J & J one of the other vaccinations. You don't know what it is until you get there. So, she may get one, just not J & J unless they have figured out the problem by then. Oh, J & J apparently doesn't spoil the way the other ones do as it is just refrigerated. It isn't taken out, thawed and used.

This is what the cdc says re taking meds before the shot. Helpful tips Talk to your doctor about taking over-the-counter medicine, such as ibuprofen, acetaminophen, aspirin, or antihistamines, for any pain and discomfort you may experience after getting vaccinated. You can take these medications to relieve post-vaccination side effects if you have no other medical reasons that prevent you from taking these medications normally. It is not recommended you take these medicines before vaccination for the purpose of trying to prevent side effects. From www.cdc.gov/coronavirus/2019-ncov/vaccines/expect/after.html

Have your tried CVS? I thought their site was really easy to use. You are offered second dose dates that begin after 21 days so, you can pick after her prom if you want. It's so flexible that I was able to schedule our first shot in AZ and our second in NM (we travel full time).
