Our state is opening up eligibility to everyone as of last night so I am trying to schedule a vaccine for my 17 yr. old and myself. I am panicking about the vaccine as I have mentioned on several threads. But I am being "harrassed" about it and am just getting it over with. The stress is crazy, I don't know why I am so terrified.
Anyways, how do you schedule the second dose? I can't even figure out how many days between the pfizer vaccine but one site said 21 days. My daughter has prom and from what I could figure out, her second dose will be the day before or day of prom. Are you allowed to schedule it for a different day? I don't want to mess it up and have to pay a penalty for changing dates. Like a missed apt. fine?
Sorry if this sounds confusing, I am so stressed about scheduling, etc. Thanks for listening to my irrational fear! and my usual dumb questions.

They make your second appointment for you when you show up for your first. It will be exactly 21 days later (3 weeks) at the same time as your first shot. You don’t get to choose a different appointment time.

Its 3 weeks for Pfizer. Scheduling depends on your state and/or who you are getting the vaccine through.
Here you don't schedule the 2nd dose you just go back 3 weeks after as a walk in. My parents both go Pfizer and weather delayed the 2nd shot a week.
You can delay the 2nd dose for up to 3 weeks if necessary. So if your daughter is worried about feeling crappy during prom have her schedule a day or two after.

IME, the 2nd dose is scheduled by whoever administers the 1st dose. I went through my health care provider, one DS went through Walgreens, and one went through a county thing set up. All 2nd doses were scheduled when the 1st was rep'd, but by whoever gave the 1st dose.

I had my first dose of Pfizer through Walgreens and they scheduled the second dose for 4 weeks later, this coming Sunday. Maybe that would work better for your daughter's prom situation. Good luck!

My husband and parents didn't have any side effects from the vaccine, so hopefully she won't either. It's better that it's the day before because the past year she has had immediate reactions to vaccines (and flu shot). So she can get the vaccine and then take it easy the rest of the day. Then as long as she has no "normal" side effects the next day she will hopefully be good.

Thanks! I didn't know walgreens did vaccines. I went on rite aid website (I am computer challenged so it took me over an hour to figure out how to schedule on rite aid) and looked for pfizer. I will check walgreens!

For my dh, they scheduled him 4 weeks later but he could pick the day. It didn't need to be exact.

So from what I’ve seen is the Pfizer one is 21 days from the first appt to the second and Moderna (the one I got) is 28 days. For me when I booked the first appt the system automatically booked my second for the same time slot. So March 26th at 9:30 and April 23rd at 9:30. So I had my second appt booked before I even had my first shot.
My friend just got her first shot yesterday and after she got the first shot they gave her an appt card for May 5th, 22 days after the first.
Your best bet is to try to call someone where you are getting the vaccine from. I got mine from my doctor but my friend went through the vaccine finder site and was at the baseball stadium. It doesn’t have to be exactly 21 days after the first but you want to be within a few days of the date for the second.
And it’s perfectly normal to be nervous. I have wanted the shot since they first came out but I’ll be honest I was a nervous wreck the days leading up to my vaccine. Lots of what if’s, what if I have a reaction, what if it doesn’t work, what if I get Covid between the first and second shot. All perfectly normal feelings. I’m sure I will have the same feelings when we get the second though because I just have a feeling my symptoms will be worse and I hate the inconvenience of being under the weather because mom life doesn’t stop but to me, it’s worth it in the end.

We called our local pharmacy and got an appointment the next day (I'm smack in the middle of the Bible belt - lots of people don't want the vaccine here, so I'm sure that contributed to our ease).
They made our 2nd appointment on the spot for 21 days out, I'm sure I could have asked them to delay it a day or 2.

We got Pfizer at Rite Aid and our appointments were automatically scheduled for 21 days at the same time as our first appointment. I got a text confirming my second appointment the day after my first, and then the week of a reminder text and a text the day before reminding me.

I am going to call around and ask if we can pick the day or if you can only go on the day they set. It sounds like it depends on the place. Maybe at a pharmacy it's okay but a big clinic that only comes on certain days you have to go on their day.

I would wait and schedule her first dose a week later so her 2nd is the week after prom I was going to make this same suggestion. Everything I've heard & experienced with this is that the side effects show up several hours later and can range from non-existent to absolutely miserable with fever, aches, stomach issues, etc. I wouldn't want to chance it with her prom.

No such thing. I am having trouble figuring out how to schedule with walgreens. do you have to have an account? Yes Thanks! I just called them and was able to ask. I am having an easier time figuring rite aid's site out so will probably stick with them. They also let you know which vaccine so you can go to store with the one you want which I was happy about. Only a couple walgreens in our area have the vaccine they told me. But we have so many in our state in phase 1a, so everything seems to be pretty open with lots of vaccines now for the other phases.
Good to know that you don't get a missed appt. fee.

Good luck and sending you calming and good thoughts. You can get through this and once done hopefully your stress level will be reduced as will you worrying!

I went through Kroger and scheduled the second appointment at the same time I scheduled the first. It gave me the option of a few dates after the exact 21 day window.

And I just realized she has 3 AP exams and 2 CHS exams in mid May, so I don't know what to do. I guess we need to find a place where she can schedule her second shot or we just have to take a chance with prom.

I would wait and schedule her first dose a week later so her 2nd is the week after prom I am just tired of the being asked all the time about if we are vaccinated. Long story. So we are just doing it so the questions stop. But otherwise I would love to schedule for another time. Or if she could just get one dose (had covid before). She has important stuff going on in May and June.
I just realized there is a Johnson and Johnson vaccine at a clinic an hour away, so that would be perfect!

I have trouble scheduling anything online because I have no tech skills (even simple ones everyone else can do). So lots of stress with that. And when I call, they tell me to do it online. And I worry about the vaccine and I have never worried about vaccines before.

I would honestly make a phone call (ETA try a small local pharmacy if you can). It seems to be a lot less complicated than signing up online. If she has exams, schedule her shot for a Thursday or Friday - it appears even the most severe reactions (fever, chills, etc) are gone within a couple of days, that would give her the weekend to recover.

Check on that again. There is another thread about the CDC/FDA stopping use of J&J due to similar blood clot issues to AstraZenica.

Maybe at a pharmacy it's okay but a big clinic that only comes on certain days you have to go on their day. If you miss the day there will inevitably be a way to get in after and still get the second shot. We were able to chose the date for the second Pfizer shot (after the correct scheduling window was open) so it can be done depending on the venue.

I’d schedule her first shot ASAP and then schedule her second shot four weeks out. That should get her past prom and her AP exams. Her second shot may be automatically scheduled, but I would definitely think that you could reschedule that appointment. Life happens and when I scheduled my second shot (I could choose the date and time), we were advised to chose our date expecting that we would need a day or two after the second shot for recovery. No one can force you to get the second shot exactly 21 days out. You just shouldn’t get it sooner than that.
Another option would be to get the Moderna shot which has a 4 week time period between shots.
(I got the Moderna shot and am with Tricare overseas. )

They had iPads at each car to schedule after you had the first shot. It was perfect. They said to pick a day the week of whatever... it was so convenient.
