.. United but am considering using American Airlines to go from USA to Toronto. For the first time ever, as a MileagePlus member, I don't have the option of selecting my seating as the majority of the legs of the return trip are operated by Air Canada... It seems that I can upgrade to roomier seating on AA.
Want to book within the next couple of hours. Any info re: AA would be most appreciated. Thanks!

Sisters and I flew AA June 2 and again on June 9. Sister paid to select the bulkhead seating which has much more leg space, but carry on has to go up in the bins because there is no chair in front of you to slide the bag under.
We were offered the choice to pay more and select our seating, or get the bulkhead seating. AA does charge for the bags unless you are a loyalty customer. Sister said to join their program and get the first bag free.
When I fly to Ottawa, I just fly Air Canada because the larger airline companies put me in a "partner airline" and I end up on Air Canada anyway. I would think that there would be more flight options for Toronto.
Insignificant detail: June 2021 was the last month AA will put a print magazine in the seat as "customers do not want that now."
Also, the inseat movie screen was no longer was functional. One had to view any movie on either a phone or ipad/tablet. The customer had to download AA app, connect to the plane's wifi and then view any movie.

As I am in the DFW area (a major AA hub) that is the only airline I have flown the last 6-7 years.
I would say 50% of the time they are late.
Frankly, I don't love them, but I only fly direct flights and would waste a lot of time if I tried to avoid them.

AA has been having a lot of staffing issues and canceled flights lately. Look for news about it.
We had an experience so bad with them a couple of years ago that I’ll never fly them again, but I know everyone has their airline horror stories.

Thanks to all who have replied! I think you know that when I "like" your reply it means thank you, not that I like your unhappy experience? WHAT? Am I reading this correctly? This would be industry-wide, I presume. yikes! "The Allied Pilots Association sees it a bit differently. The union warned American Airlines in advance of the rapid recovery that the combination of early retirements and the need to certify pilots before they are cleared to fly after a break in service. American had 1,000 pilots accept early retirement offers in addition to the 1,600 who were furloughed during the height of the pandemic." Thanks for this link, myshelly. Minutes ago I booked a great looking itinerary (i always prefer LONG layovers in case of delays) and chose the seats with extra legroom (which I find enormously helpful even though I'm 5'4" and 165 lbs. I have 24 or 48 hour grace period in which I can get a full refund, I believe. Need to think about this...

I usually prefer to fly American, but last time we tried to book a flight with them they ended up changing our itinerary multiple times after booking. We ended up cancelling & going with Delta - ETA that was just this past January
where are you coming from/going to? air canada might be your best bet, try booking with them direct. Or look at Westjet

I would fly with Air Canada.
I was looking at the booking site recently and noticed that there isn't a direct LAX-YYZ flight anymore. There is a stop-over in YVR. Don't forget that you go thru Canada Customs at the first entry point into Canada. Make sure that you have enough time to go thru Customs and then to your connecting flight. Air Canada is really good with connecting flights.

You would think it would be industry wide, but so far I have only seen articles about it being huge issues for SW and AA. I was reading about it because I was considering booking flights with SW and it was concerning to me.

You have to have an AA credit card to get free baggage (the flight has to be charged to the card). The free baggage is only valid in the continental US too.

Thanks for correction on the baggage fee. I have a grudge against AA and try to avoid them so didn't pay close attention to her details.

I plan to never fly American Airlines again, if at all possible. I fly a lot and the worst flight I’ve ever taken was American. What should have been a six hour flight home was almost 22 hours and a nightmare. We were delayed for hours and they never explained why or kept us updated. Offered no information, support or help getting another flight. Never apologized.
They did send me an email asking for me to rate my flight and I did, a scathing review. American never responded which didn’t surprise me at all.

We can equally choose American and Delta from our airport. If the price difference is only a few bucks, we choose Delta.

If they have open first class seats, they will offer them the day before your flight. Sometimes I’ll upgrade. It’s worth the extra perks and only costs around $100?

I have been flying American lately because the price difference on Delta is so extreme and Delta doesn’t have direct flights to the DC area. Knock on wood, but American hasn’t had a late flight yet, and other than still not offering beverage service, everything is fine. They reserve a LOT of seats as premium seats, so if you don’t book early and you want your seat assignment, you can count on a $12, $16, or $33 fee for many segments.

DD has been flying the past 6 weeks or so and uses United. Most of her flights (all the direct ones) have been cancelled and she's been rebooked on other flights - always a much worse time or connection. While AA and SW are getting the press right now, United seems to be having its own issues. Her flights have been uneventful and on time/early though.

We use Alaska Airlines but they are partners with American. Booked my tickets but can only choose seats on Alaska. I had to go to American's website to choose seats for those flights.
If you go the website for Air Canada you should be able to see what seats are available for the flights you want.
Hope that helps.

We just flew to Texas with AA a couple of weeks ago and came home last week. It was a nightmare ! Cancelled flights, delayed flights, sitting in a plane because they had navigation problems and we had a 10 hour layover before we made it back home. To top it off our luggage was lost. AA is not the airline to fly with right now !

I just received notice from Air Canada saying they will not charge for changing flights after you make a reservation.

As **GypsyGirl** shared about her DD's experiences on United, it seems this may be an industry wide issue. As a whole they're not prepared for the huge uptick in travelers.

Are you a frequent flier with them, by any chance? Yes, the announcement read as if it is for everyone. Is anything on the website? When I checked out Air Canada a few days ago the prices were more than double what they are on United or American... so I haven't checked again. In the meantime I booked an itinerary with 3hr+ layovers on American. I think I'm going to keep the reservation and keep my fingers crossed.

We always fly Delta. We had an interesting change on our return tickets from Hawaii and one I haven't seen before. I was calling to check on why we didn't have two seats together, and I still don't know why (it's fixed), but they let me know there was a change in times returning. Nothing unusual, but it took us to a different city which she clarified before I panicked on other departure times with the 3 hour change . I'd guess it has something to do with availability or something. Flights were fairly empty when were purchased tickets.

Hi flanz! I've flown AA a lot, but not since Covid. I have problems with every flight I take regardless of carrier. Just be glad you aren't flying with me. LOL! I really just want to say, have a safe and fun trip!

AA charges $30 for first bag....I think most airlines do that now. Southwest has first bag free, I think.

They stranded us in Atlanta, made us leave security, couldn't guarantee rebooking our flight, and they work us up very early in the morning saying the terminal wasn't a sleeping area.
