I am sure we have some peas that have been hit or know someone that has had their car hit by a deer. My DH called me at lunch yesterday and said he got hit by a deer. His bumper was already hanging by a thread due to some other damage. You know, a high curb, an object on the highway...let's just say there is some...history here.
Anyway, I get home yesterday and look at the damage. I am expecting to see the entire bumper off, bumps, dings, hair even. Nope, just the left quarter of the bumper is ripped off. No other damage to the vehicle. I walked all around the car. That was the only damage. I have never hit a deer but I have seen damage to other vehicles. Does this seem like deer damage to you?

Maybe he just clipped it.
My son hit 3 deer last season, bad luck for him and his car looks like something that should be in a junkyard. It still runs though. So far he's refusing any help to get a new vehicle, so 🤷🏼♀️

Interesting how he puts it as "a deer hit my car" instead of "I hit a deer with my car".
Anyone who I know who hit a deer with their car had extensive damage. But that usually happens on a highway at high rates of speed that are hard to react quickly enough to when seeing a deer jump out in the road/highway.
I guess technically it would depend on the circumstances of the accident. It sounds like you possibly don't believe him based on your previous comment on "history here". Yikes, tricky one, good luck!

Almost once on our way to the airport.. he jumped right in front of us.. very lucky we didn't hit him(her) It was around 4:30am and we were going to Vegas for a trip I won.
DH is a truck driver and hit a deer about a year ago.. not much damage. He did manage to hit a bat too which was stuck inside the front of his truck, in the grate thing.. SO gross.

My daughter was hit by a deer. Hit in the driver's door panel. The only damage was a big dent in the door.

Is this an episode of Gilmore Girls? Rory was parked and a deer hit her car. Everyone kept saying "you hit a deer?" and she kept saying "no I got hit BY a deer!"
We clipped the ass of a moose once and it barely left a dent and they're huge. This was in a 92 truck not in the plastic things of today. If you have those tiny deer and depends on how you hit it it's possible to not have much damage.

I've hit more deer than I can count. Everyone hits a deer at some point if you live in a rural area like I do. Your DH could have very well clipped the deer. Not all deer accidents involve head on collisions.

I was hit by or hit a deer causing damage once.
Another time, one ran from field on left side of road to right side of road. With my car in between. It jumped, cleared my hood and its back hooves scraped my windshield as it passed over. It scared the sh!t out of me and LITERALLY him as there was poop on my windshield after.
He stumbled a bit after landing to the right of my car but barely broke stride. I, on the other hand, pulled over for a minute before heading on to work.
Damage from a deer can vary; minor to devastating to vehicle and animal.

That's how car insurance looks at it. A deer (or other animal) hitting your car is considered comprehensive damage, not collision damage.

Interesting how he puts it as "a deer hit my car" instead of "I hit a deer with my car". From an insurance perspective the first statement puts the deer at fault, the second puts the driver at fault. naby64, damage from an animal hitting the car comes in all shapes and sizes. It could be that the deer just clipped the corner, especially if your DH was able to react quick enough to swerve away.

Around here, "a deer hit my car" means it probably hit the car on the side and literally was the deer hitting the car. Definitely could be just a small spot. "I hit a deer" means my car impacted the deer as I was moving forward. It could be dead center, it could be toward the side, but it will be in the front. The amount of damage depends on how fast the car was traveling at the time

It could be-you said the bumper was barely hanging on, so I think hitting a deer could rip off a part of the bumper. But per the history, I see why you are suspicious!
I have hit a small deer myself and it barely left a mark. I also know someone who totaled their car hitting a large deer at highway speed.
My friend Al was HIT BY A DEER-it hit him right behind the driver's door of his truck. You can't make this stuff up!
DH's cousin hit a Canadian Goose and it broke the radiator.

Does this seem like deer damage to you? Sure - just like with any accident, some damage can be worse than others. It depends on how hard the deer hit and where he hit the car.
I always say a deer hit my car (instead of I hit a deer) too - because the deer DID hit my car...I was driving along - below the speed limit due to my location and a deer just jumped out at me.
I was hit by a deer a few years ago and it almost cost me my life. I was in the mountains when it ran right into me, causing me to spin, cross over the lanes and plummet down into a 10 foot ravine. I was left with my arm broken in 2 places (later required surgery) and my head broke right through the side door window so I had a huge gash on my head (required 23 staples) - thank the Lord that there was a nurse on her way home following right behind me..she pulled over and a man happened along and he pulled me out of the car, which was smoking and he thought was on fire (it wasn't but he didn't know that). The nurse treated me with a first aid kit she kept in the car until the ambulance came. I was in the hospital for a week. My car (a Chevy Blazer SUV) was totaled.

The difference in wording makes sense, I'm just not sure I've ever heard it put that way with the people who I know it's happened to!

Not me but dh and DD#1. Hubby's car was a mess on the front because it was a small vehicle, and the huge buck came up on the hood into the window. It was bad. DD's vehicle just had a tiny bit of damage as it was a large SUV, small doe, and they clipped each other. Really depends on many circumstances.

Does and babies are on the move around here at the moment. Could have been a smaller deer. I also know the road where he was traveling, country area, not a high speed area. He said the deer ran off after hitting the car. So I am going to go with the possibility of no other damage. I need to tamp down my "I don't believe you" radar sometimes.

My BIL was hit by a deer on the way to work one day. He was riding his motorcycle and it knocked him off the motorcycle. There was a car behind BIL and they witnessed the accident and called the ambulance. It’s a good thing because BIL was all set to get back on the bike and go to work.

Several years ago a deer came running across the road and hit our car broadside ~ the mirror got the brunt of it and a few indentations on the door. Cost $4000 to repair. It could be the deer glanced off the bumper that was already damaged.

I've hit a deer, and a deer has hit me. I'm in northern MN. pretty common. A deer can total a vehicle, or just be a minor clip if you're lucky. Why would you not believe him? hmmmmm

I've hit 4 and got hit by a flying one (hit by car in other lane), so 5. The damage varied. The flying and running deer did the most damage.

I got hit by a deer once, but not hard. It scampered off, so hopefully was okay. No damage to my car. But I’d believe anything from no damage to a total loss.
And for those who seem confused, hitting a deer and getting hit by a deer are two different things. When the deer runs into you, not vice versa, we don’t call it “hitting a deer.” Because we didn’t hit the deer. The deer hit us.
ETA as to OP’s question: I think that generally speaking, a deer running into a car isn’t moving as fast as the car in question, and also doesn’t weigh nearly as much. So that would explain the lighter damage than you were expecting to see.

Over the years, my vehicle has had several interactions with deer. Once, I stopped just in time when one ran in front of me and the deer kicked out the glass from one of my headlights. Once, a deer running directly across the road ran directly into a side panel of a door, and the whole door needed to be replaced. But other times--except when one jumped over a snowbank, rolled across the hood of my little car, then leaped over the bank on the opposite side of the road--there was minimal damage. Each time, my dh grilled me when I got home, always assuming it had to be MY fault!
Then one glorious day, (not for the deer I guess, but he DID scamper away from the scene) a deer took off his side mirror as they tried to avoid each other. Now he believes that deer can "run into a car".
After the more serious incident, my brother bought me deer whistles for Christmas. I have used them ever since, and touch wood, have not since had an encounter anywhere near that close.

If the deer hits you, there is less damage than if you hit the deer in my experience.
