Why are so many parents against masking their children or making them get the vaccine?
This is a perspective of risks that I haven't seen here on this board.
Once in a while I see people question why everyone isn't 100% onboard with all the mandates being imposed upon us.
No matter whether or not the question has been rhetorical or sincere, I'm adding this link for anyone who may be interested.
The names I was called here the many times I tried to get people to care about the crime in Chicago... I'm not willing to go through that again right now. I'm not here to argue or debate. Y'all can say whatever you want, I won't participate.

Well, most of us want "mandates" to control gun violence, too.

so there are several ways to insure more children in chicago are safe: 1. stronger gun laws nationally, so guns are less accessible to people in chicago. 2. more children and adults getting vaccinated, so the hospitals are less overwhelmed with covid patients, and they have more options to treat anyone with gun trauma or other trauma and there is not a lack of hospital medical care access. 3. change the culture that makes solving problems with a gun unacceptable.
you pick. vaccination impacts the medical system in its ability to treat anyone for anything.

I think it is two sides of the exact same coin. If people cared more about other people and felt a greater responsibility toward their community, gun violence would decrease and Covid deaths would decrease too. It's basically the dog-eat-dog philosophy of both those wielding guns and not getting vaccinated.

I care about both. Yes, Please, can we figure out a way to fix Chicago's race, ethnic and poverty disparities? Also yes, lets fix our disgusting gun problems, get vaccinated, wear masks and we all win. Better country for all. Half the country likes to hoard their money and be in power more than they care about people. So this will never happen. Your call out as if this is somehow a one or the other thing is confusing. Did you ACTUALLY get called names for just, "trying to get people to care about the crime in Chicago?" I'd like to see the context of that situation, because that doesn't ring true in the way you've stated it. I apologize, if I'm wrong.

Tax the rich (individuals and corps) who pay an effective all-in rate < a teacher or a mechanic. Use that money to hire thousands of social workers to really be able to make an impact. Instead of having a caseload so high it's all they can do to find time to write the reports.

What exactly is your point? These two issues are wholly different. I can care about violence against children as well as vaccinations for children. Can you?
And lastly, why do you keep posting stuff and refusing to participate in the ensuing discussion. Does it give you some sort of thrill? Are you unable to articulate your point? Do you even have a point? I mean seriously, what IS your end game?

This. Apparently guns, like Covid, are a huge problem. With regard to Covid, there are so many people in some ICUs with Covid that other people with serious illnesses and injuries have to wait for significant periods of time. So those people are also impacted.

Gee, I wonder what the latest headlines on the Republican fan pages are.
Newsflash. It’s possible to care about the health of children as a whole. Which means I don’t want them to die unnecessarily, period. Of gunshots or of vaccine-preventable diseases. Or anything else. Why is that so difficult to understand?

Please go and fuck yourself. You don’t care about crime in Chicago. References to “crime in Chicago” are some of the most clear uses of dog whistling and generating anti-Black attitudes without talking about race.
To my white race justice allies: please post an article that discusses dog whistling with regard to “Chicago” for those who come to this thread and may not know. My blood pressure is already spiked just seeing this idiotic thread title, so I’m not doing any googling right now.

Are you trying to say that we shouldn't be vaccinating or masking children to prevent more than 200 deaths last year? Or you don't think we care about children being murdered by guns to be important? I'm not sure of what you're trying to portray with your post.
I care about the safety and health of all children, especially after they are born.

www.washingtonpost.com/news/posteverything/wp/2018/08/13/the-latest-and-greatest-in-deflections-and-dog-whistles-what-about-chicago/The latest and greatest in deflections and dog whistles: ‘What about Chicago?’ Anyone pointing to my city to score political points doesn't actually care about it. Whenever certain issues — gun control laws, racism, policing — arise, a certain group of pundits suddenly becomes very interested in Chicago. “If LeBron James wants to champion social justice as well as basketball, he should go to Chicago and help the poor people there who are experiencing unprecedented violence,” tweeted Bill O’Reilly last week. He weighed in further: “More innocent blood in Chicago streets. Politicians are clueless. President Trump should get involved.” It sounds like concern, as long as you don’t post a single follow-up question about what happens after Trump or James show up. The numbers on violence in Chicago are often shocking. Last weekend, 66 people were shot, and 12 of them died, including two 17-year-olds. It’s horrifying. It has also become convenient political fodder. Rudolph W. Giuliani took the opportunity to tweet: “63 murders this weekend in Rahm Emmanuel’s Chicago. His legacy more murders in his city than ever before. It’s only because of Democrat brain washing that he has even a chance of remaining. Support police professional Garry McCarthy.” If you don’t bother yourself with facts, it almost sounds reasonable. But if you do a little digging, you quickly figure out that Giuliani is wildly wrong on the numbers, and that McCarthy wants nothing to do with his support because he knows that it’s just another dog whistle. Of course, no one whistling “what about Chicago?” has any desire to resolve the problems in Chicago. If this were about Chicago, they’d be talking about the perils of low investment in communities, the shuttering of mental health facilities, school closures, police corruption or ineffective policing. There would be a push to bring back programs that were cut during the Illinois budget crisis. CeaseFire’s violence reduction strategies were working, until the budget freeze of Gov. Bruce Rauner (R) cut $4.7 million in funding in 2015, effectively shutting down the program. Though some funding has been restored recently, the momentum they had built has obviously been lost. “What about Chicago” is a convenient deflection, and nothing more ever seems to come of it. But what about Chicago and the gun violence that plagues it? That’s a conversation about America. Because the killing of 59 people, with more than 500 wounded, didn’t happen in Chicago. That mass shooting was in Las Vegas in 2017. Same problem but with higher numbers and a death toll reached in minutes rather than hours or days. Anyone who responds to a discussion of violence with “what about Chicago” should ask themselves what they really mean. The problems in Chicago could be, will be, problems in your own backyard: too many guns, too many untreated mental health issues, and the crushing weight of long-term poverty that can drive morals to the side in favor of survival instincts. Pundits like to point out that Chicago has strict gun-control laws, yet still has gun crime. They ignore the fact that 60 percent of guns used here are legally purchased in surrounding states with lax gun laws. There’s a saying here: “Chicago over everything.” Chicagoans are almost fanatically loyal to our city. We’re irritatingly intense about pizza, sports and so much more. We have turned that same intensity on the problem of gun violence. We have marches that shut down major roads and self-funded violence intervention programs that might be as simple as moms sitting together on a corner and feeding kids. But we have to be aggressive, because even after the outbreaks of violence, even though the city has spent exorbitant amounts of money settling police misconduct cases, Chicago police are still more interested in setting up stings for shoe thieves than in actively working with communities to improve conditions for everyone. The question shouldn’t be “what about Chicago?” The question should be “why aren’t we as a nation doing enough to combat violence?” We know at least some of what works: violence interruption, job programs for teens and their caregivers, funding for after-school and summer activities. Making those options more available than guns or ammunition could go a long way to solving the problem. What would the shooting rate look like if we made sure that we funded not only schools but also community programs and health clinics? What if we made safety accessible to everyone? Right now, the only answers we’re hearing from the right are “thoughts and prayers” and pretending that a “good guy with a gun” could have saved someone, followed closely by “what about Chicago?” We ignore the part where getting caught in the crossfire can kill you, where shootings are a near-daily occurrence because we don’t want to admit that gun violence is a public health crisis in America. There’s no easy solution to gun violence. Adding more police or targeting, traumatizing and jailing more youths isn’t doing a thing to stop violence. Ranting about failed policies like “Stop & Frisk” that violate constitutional rights isn’t about helping anyone in danger, it’s about trying to rack up points in a bizarre political game that treats death tolls like scorecards. This is a problem that requires all politicians of whatever party to make the people they are supposed to serve a priority instead of lobbyists. It means less pork in the budget and spending tax dollars on the health of the population. What about Chicago? Chicago deserves better. We all do. By Mikki Kendall

City shootings have become away of life. Other places too.. Until the politicians are willing to take action it won't stop. BTW; MSNBC there has just been a fatal shooting in a supermarket in Tennessee.. Memphis suburb 1 killed, 13 others injured in shooting at Kroger supermarket outside Memphis The suspected shooter is dead from what authorities believe is a self-inflicted gunshot wound, Collierville Police Chief Dale Lane said. Officers responded to reports of an active shooter at the supermarket in Collierville, a suburb about 30 miles east of Memphis, just after 1:30 p.m. local time, Collierville Police Chief Dale Lane said. At least one person was killed in the incident. www.nbcnews.com/news/us-news/1-killed-13-others-injured-shooting-kroger-supermarket-outside-memphis-n1279975

I can’t wait until when Gia/Pixie goes on her next pro-guns/anti-sensible-gun-control posting spree,, Lefty sides with us and starts challenging her to solve the gun violence issue across the USA, because she thinks that it is more dangerous to children than COVID. It will be so refreshing to see someone on the far right here finally acknowledge the tragedy that we have in this country due to children being shot and/or murdered daily by guns, and take the stand that gun control is even more necessary than COVID vaccines for the safety of America’s youth. I so look forward to her gun control suggestions, since it is an issue that is important to her now. And I will love to see the back-and-forth between Gia/Pixie and Lefty - it will be popcorn worthy.

Gun rights advocates love to use Chicago as a bogeyman because of its gun control laws, which are largely useless given the ease of buying guns outside the city and in neighboring states. Fun fact: the cities with the worst gun death rates are mostly in red states with lax gun control laws. Chicago doesn’t even break the top 25. www.google.com/amp/s/www.cbsnews.com/amp/pictures/murder-map-deadliest-u-s-cities/In any case, gun deaths are a red herring in the argument about Covid restrictions. One has nothing to do with the other, except insofar as a gunshot victim might be denied an ICU bed because they’re all filled up with unvaccinated Covid patients.

Two different things can both be bad at the same time, ya know.
And we can care about and condemn them at the same time, too. (another gasp)
To compare these two is silly, at best.
The "I won't participate" after (trying to) stir the pot makes me believe there is a reason for that: somewhere you know the comparison is ridiculous and to actually participate may show that.
So $hit and run it is. Again. 'Til next time.
ETA posted before read. I could have saved myself the trouble and "yeah, that"ed a lot of the above.

Or if everyone just ignored it she might get bored of doing it possibly? I think that she does it when she is bored and has nothing better to distract her from her life than feebly attempt to rile up the board with plagiarized dog whistle arguments. And lately, she’s been pulling a Lauren by shitting on the board and then posting for a few days on threads pretending she actually cares about participating in discussions while completely ignoring her own bad behavior on her own threads. Lauren perfected it, disappeared, and now Lefty has picked up the mantle adding her own flavor of bitterness. I’ve decided that I will respond in whatever way amuses me in the moment. I may as well make her shit-fests work for me. We never seem to be able to completely ignore any poster, even if it is the best strategy from a “how to interact with misbehaving toddler” viewpoint. 😀

There have been a lot of comments already, most of which I agree with. But I'm going to ask you a genuine question - what parent, when making a decision about whether or not to vaccinate or mask their child - says "huh. Well the gun violence and untimely deaths of children in Chicago is really terrible so I'm just out." The comparison is ludicrous and offensive.
And if you weren't trying to make that direct comparison, if you were just making a snide judgment about the parents in some neighborhoods of Chicago who continue to live there with their children and using it to score political points against liberals? Then I say you have earned every bit of ridicule and criticism coming to you. Because the privilege, inherent racism and frankly, basic ignorance about the circumstances in which people different than you may live, is horrible.

I know this is a troll thread, but I wanted to share a great documentary about a group in Chicago that's doing extraordinary work to stop the violence in their neighborhoods. It's called The Interrupters - the leader is a daughter of a guy who was in one of the biggest gangs in 1970's Chicago. She's amazing. I absolutely recommend giving the film a watch.
Hope the preview posts.

The problem of guns freely available, and money for help NOT available leads to a country in which people are gunned down daily, in Chicago and EVERYWHERE ELSE - other cities, in rural areas, in stores, schools, churches, synagogues, mosques, malls, etc. THIS IS WHAT INEQUALITY AND HOPELESSNESS LOOK LIKE!

OK, I know I'm feeding the trolls here, but the two are not even distantly related. We shouldn't try to solve a problem because there's a worse problem? Lunacy. By all means, let's not trifle around with logic and reason.
This reminds me of the $h*t-and-run meme where they show the crowds US Open vs. a classroom without mentioning that the US Open required vaccinations and was outdoors. Let's compare apples and apples, not apples and horse$h*t.
