"The Dansko Crumble." What's that? It's when you put on one of your favorite pairs of Dansko shoes and they crumble as you walk. It was an unknown to me until yesterday morning. If you google it, you will see this has happened to many people. I will no longer buy Dansko's. So sad but if you own a pair (or more than one), watch out for the crumble!

Bummer your shoe crumbled on you like that. The 'crumble' has been going on for quite a few years now. When I was selling on eBay about 6 years ago, it was a common complaint in the seller's group I belonged to. Unfortunately, it's not just Dansko that crumbles. Just last summer DH had a pair of hiking boots crumble and then the sole came completely unattached from the boot!
How old was this pair?

This is surprising. I have two pairs of Dansko clogs that have saved me from bunion surgery, and neither of them have crumbled over 10+ years. They just keep going and going. Could the newer Danskos be less reliable?

I hope this doesn't happen to any of my other shoes.

Could the newer Danskos be less reliable? Maybe not sure. All of my other Dansko's, Alegria's, and Sanita's keep going and going but now I will have to watch for this. I read on another site that humidity can cause the soles to break down faster. I live in a very humid place. Previously I was in TX where it was not as humid as where I am now. I wonder about that now that I read about the humidity causing it. Hmmmmm?

That doesn't look like a "crumble" to me, it's more like an earthquake!

I posted years ago on a thread that my fav Dansko sandals did that--the thick sole split near the heel. They were several years old and worn often, but Danskos had a reputation for lasting practically forever, so I figured it was a fluke. I have a similar pair now that are a few years old but not worn as often as I no longer work. But since I've heard it's not so uncommon, I won't buy another pair.

I had a pair of shoes do that to me. Can't remember the brand but they were favorites. I was so sad. Now I carry a pair of leather flip flops with me in my car/backpack (#teacherlife) just in case of shoe failure.

Gracious.

I had that happen with a pair of White Mountain sandals a number of years ago. Fortunately, it hasn't happened with my Danskos....yet.

I've had it happen to a pair of Börn shoes and two pairs of Clarks. Dh had it happen to a pair of hiking boots while we were on vacation.
And I live where the humidity is very low.

It happened to me years ago when I was at work. I didn't know it was a "thing." I haven't bought another pair since. I was pretty ticked off it happened.

That happened to me once, I don’t recall what brand. It was the fall and my summer shoes were put away and my winter ones came out. One day I notice black crumbs all over the room and discovered my soles were disintegrating.

I will say that 8 years is a pretty good run for a pair of shoes. By then, I'd say the support of the sole is diminishing. But I wouldn't expect it to crumble! I wear Clarks or Born for my main daily shoes and what I wear when traveling. I've never had the sole crumble, but I do replace them every other year (summer one year, winter the other). I definitely notice a difference in the support of the sole. I did buy a pair of Earth Origin Mary Jane's this summer and I'm in love with them. They look good with skirts and dresses and are really comfortable.

Yes, I was just trying to remember the pair that I had that almost did the same thing. They were slip ons and I think Clarks. I had a pair of Born but they didn't give me any trouble. (and I can't get the 2 dots over the O to work for anything)

Several years ago we were having a big open house at work. My boss noticed a spot on the floor that she wanted to clean up, so she sprayed it with some cleaner she got from the guys in the shop, put a paper-towel down and then used her foot to wipe it up. Whatever was in that cleaner at away at her shoes and caused them to look like yours. She had to borrow flip-flops from a co-worker to greet the customers in all day.
I wonder if it's possible that you stepped in some solvent that ate away at the heel.

I had this happen once to an older pair of Dansko. Because their shoes tend to last forever it was surprising, but I wore them for at least 10 years, which I think is a pretty good run. Having it happen to one pair of shoes would not be enough for me to never buy their shoes again.

I had it happen to a pair of Steve Madden clogs and another brand, that I cannot remember, of course. I don't think it's Dansko-specific. I think any of the larger-soled shoes will have the same problem.

Just part of our throw-away culture. Sorry, but shoes shouldn't "break down" (from just sitting there) because they're made poorly w/materials, glues, etc. KNOWN to break down. It's one thing if you wear them out by WEARING them out. But it's another if they're just sitting and they self-destruct. Shoes didn't used to do that. They changed to cheaper, lighter materials so that NOW they do that. I've had shoes that I've had for 20+ years, wear infrequently, and they're fine. But if they only last 4-5 years, more buying, more profits! WOO-HOO www.wired.com/2015/05/sneakers/

I have been wearing Dansko's both as work shoes (RN) and my go to with jeans for 25+ years and this is the first I have seen or heard about this phenomena! Very interesting....

I've had this happen to other shoes. I kept this cute pair of sandals from my Mothers, I have no idea how old they were. They were a designer brand and I can't remember which one right now but they crumbled the first time I wore them. I was so disappointed! It also happened to a pair of Echo sandals but I'd had those for years and worn them a lot.

Sorry that happened. I guess I think 8 years is a pretty good life for a pair of shoes. If you otherwise like Danskos, I guess I wouldn't abandon the brand because a sole fell apart after that long.
