that happened to me once with a favorite pair of NAOT sandals, but they were prob 10 yo.
They fell apart just as I was entering our sanctuary one Sunday. First I noticed I was shedding black "stuff" with no idea what it was.
Thinking back, I believe I read at the time that NOT wearing them frequently contributed to this issue. And mine were shoes I only wore once in a while, with certain dress pants, mostly.
ETA - when it happened, I was lucky I didn't fall and break a bone, it was that jarring!

I had that happen to me with a pair of Dansko clogs about 2 years ago right in the middle of Michael's when I was there to buy a vase. I'd never heard of this before and I was completely shocked. I've been wearing Danskos and Birkenstocks almost exclusively for years. I got home and Googled it and yep-it was happening to other people too. The pair of Dansko's it'd happened to were a few years old-maybe 8 years old, no more than that.
It didn't stop me from buying more Danskos. I am sorry though for those Peas who have experienced this happening to their shoes. I like the additional bit of height I get from Dansko clogs since I'm short.
It seems to be happening with everything these days-nothing lasts as long or is as well made as it used to be.

I have had the same thing happen to two pairs of Clarks shoes. Same. Me too. One shoe of a pair started crumbling while I was wearing them, and ended up totally splitting under the ball of my foot, clear across the shoe. Another pair I hadn’t worn for a while and I took them out of the box to check them over when I was purging shoes. When I picked up the shoes the bottoms felt sticky and when I looked closer, the sole was splitting. Both pairs of the Clark’s had rather thick but lightweight soles, so likely they were the polyurethane soles.

This happened to me with a pair of winter boats. I really wonder if it had anything to do with gasoline that gets spilled by the pumps. Gasoline is a solvent and can destroy just about anything. Loved my Steiger boots.

Sorry that happened. I guess I think 8 years is a pretty good life for a pair of shoes. If you otherwise like Danskos, I guess I wouldn't abandon the brand because a sole fell apart after that long. I've never experienced this with a pair of shoes and wear several of the brands mentioned in this thread. With the exception of a pair of Merrells that only get worn about 2 weeks a year since moving to CA 15 years ago, most of my shoes don't last more than 5 years.

That happened to me once, I don’t recall what brand. It was the fall and my summer shoes were put away and my winter ones came out. One day I notice black crumbs all over the room and discovered my soles were disintegrating. That's exactly how it started--black crumbs across the house. Really weird. Just thankful it happened in the house instead of at work. I was headed to work for the morning.

They may have been that old but they were not worn very much. I only worn them occasionally in the winter. I LOVE shoes so they get switched out a lot. No shoe is worn that often. But it is interesting to see how many people have had it happen and with other brands. I hope I don't see this happen again but it will certainly make me think twice about buying shoes. I never pay full price but . . .

They can degrade over time in ways that more traditional soles don't, even without being worn much. In fact, I wonder if that might make it worse as they could become more brittle without frequent use/movement.

Some get worn a bit more than others but for the most part, they all get a "little" wear because I always switch up what I am wearing. So, in theory most of my shoes should then fall apart. LOL! I have been wearing another pair of Dansko's today identical to the ones in the photo just brown. They were purchased at the same time. So far, so good. We will see as the day goes on. The others disintegrated within 30 minutes of having them on.

This happened to the second pair of Danskos I ever owned. I bought them sometime between 2001 and 2002 when I lived in Northern Virginia. They disintegrated after I moved to Morgantown in 2012--probably in 2013 or 2014, so this isn't a "new" thing. None of my other Danskos have done this.
I do think it has to do with the age of the materials, but I am intrigued by the mention of gasoline above. I wonder if some of these issues are the result of chemical reactions with the shoes.
I have had problems with the soles of my sneakers breaking down. They don't "crumble," but they develop permanent "squeaks." I mean, really LOUD squeaks. Like embarrassing to walk down a hallway loud squeaks.

"The Dansko Crumble." What's that? It's when you put on one of your favorite pairs of Dansko shoes and they crumble as you walk. It was an unknown to me until yesterday morning. If you google it, you will see this has happened to many people. I will no longer buy Dansko's. So sad but if you own a pair (or more than one), watch out for the crumble! I'm not familiar with Dansko shoes, BUT, I can tell you that I've had to throw out dozens of pairs of shoes and boots in the 10 years we're living in the humid/hot south of FL. I think that the humidity just makes even good shoes simply crumble. It's happened to me many times and there was no repairing them. It wasn't just 1 brand of shoes. It's happened to many different brands. I now keep whatever basic shoes I have and I carry a spare pair of flip-flops in case they fall apart.
Just wondering if these crumble situations happened in humid parts of the world??? It has been so much more humid and the weather is more extreme, and I believe it affects the structure of shoes and boots (even sandals). Same for purses!
ETA: When they crumbled on me I was walking and the first time it happened, I almost tripped forward, not knowing what was going on. After that, I knew enough to look down at my shoes and see if they're falling apart. It's a weird feeling!! You could easily get very hurt.

katlady - NAOT was the first brand I discovered I could wear comfortably without orthotics, and for a few years now I've added Clarks to the list. Love them both. Fingers crossed you won't have any mishaps.

I don't remember the brand, but it was unexpected!

Yes, @bergdorfblonde and flanz it was very weird as it happened. If I had been out and about, I probably would have fallen. Thankfully, we are all good. And I do think the high humidity may make it worse. I did read that somewhere also. And so sad it has happened to so many other brands I like (though I only have a few Naot).

In **GypsyGirl** ’s post, she quotes an article about this that says: So, yes, humidity and heat do have an impact. 😀 I’ve had older running shoes have their soles crumble before.

I've had two pair of Danskos and a pair of Clarks crumble. The Danskos were both in their high teens, the Clarks at least 20 years old. But more than 5 years for any shoe, you probably have gotten your money's worth
I am having to buy shoes that are supportive, but not stiff. My Dansko clogs are no longer comfortable . . . anyone want a size 37 blue pair in good condition? I curl my toes with the stiff sole and they hurt after a few hours.

I wonder what would Danskos say if you would contact them? I have had shoes do that too.. I think mainly because I didn't wear them a ton?? But literally fell apart on me while wearing. But if I had paid a ton of money for them.. I might ask the company if they could do something for a fee.. or take them to a 'cobbler' or shoe repair store and see if they can be saved.

From what I have read on the web, people have contacted Dansko only to be offered a coupon code for another pair of shoes. No thanks, and they can't be repaired. I didn't think it looked like they could be, and others also said they were not able to be repaired. It probably would cost more to take them to a cobbler to repair anyway. Oh well. At least I know this happens now. I did wear the identical pair but in brown yesterday with no problem. They are the same age and same amount of wear.

Had the same thing happen to some Born clogs around 2012 - they were around 4 years old and had been worn maybe 3 months a year. Didn't buy the Born clogs after that, but did buy a pair of sandals that lasted many years.
My 2016 Dansko flip flops have held up well and I was thrilled to find a new old stock pair this summer on eBay, as this style has been discontinued and its hard to fit my wide width, right bunion, high instep foot.

You don’t know how much better you’ve just made me feel! I had a pair of Donald Pliner sandals that I wore infrequently. Earlier this summer, I decided to put them on to go to Walgreens to get passport photos done. While we were waiting for the guy to be able to take the photos, I decided to go look for something in the back of the store. On my return trip I saw a whole trail of ugly, black chunks on the floor and wondered what oaf had trampled stuff all over. The oaf was ME! So embarrassing! The whole sole of those sandals had just fallen apart. (And my passport photo looks like an old person who’s been traumatized. I was too humiliated to remember to smile.)

Wow, I had no idea about this! I bought a pair of Dansko Mary Janes like 20+ years ago and the rubber soles lasted forever. It was just a squeaky noise they made when I walked (like farting more like it!) and a foot smell that made me finally get rid of them. Now, I have since purchased two lotus-style MJ and the first pair split and crumbled after 3 wearings, and I thought it was because I was in a hot-humid area that melted them. Now, a second pair - ONE WEARING and NOT in a hot humid area, and it is doing the same thing, splitting and pieces are coming off. This is disappointing to hear, I have been a long-time clog wearer and Dansko supporter. Of course, this doesn't happen with the ones with wooden-type soles. But those don't have as pretty styles. Thanks for the heads up!! I will go cry now
