dirk gently holistic detective agency by douglas adams I'm so jealous. That's been one of my favourite books ever since I first read it about 30 years ago. I'd borrowed it from a friend when I was a starving student. I bought a copy when I got my first job out of university and I still have it. It's come with me through many moves, including moving from South Africa to Australia. Time for a re-read, I think. Thanks for the lovely memories.

I have several. I was wandering through our local shopping centre, when I noticed a man sitting inside a bookshop at a desk with a pile of books all by himself. It was Bryce Courtenay, one of my favourite Australian authors. I went in and chatted to him for about 10 minutes and he signed my copy of "The Potato factory". I have been to see Brian Cox a few times live and the last occasion, my grandson had just started university studying astrophysics so we bought him a ticket for a greet and meet. I was teaching science at the time and wore my galaxy printed dress. First thing Brian said was "I love your dress!" We all got a signed copy of his latest book. My favourite one- We had front row seats to see John Cleese and Eric Idle on stage. They did the bookshop sketch where the birdwatcher wanted a book with gannets. John C threw the book across the stage and it landed right between my feet!" During the interval, I went to show a friend who I knew was in the audience a few rows back- her brother opened the book and found that they had both signed it saying "Sorry about the gannet". However, the lights went down quickly and I had to try and sneak back to my seat. To my horror, I saw John C standing in a spotlight right in front of my seat, waiting till I returned! I looked up, mortified and he said "that's okay, take your time". The audience laughed and he said "It's ok, she's very nice". I'm also jealous of you. I love Brian Cox, John Cleese and Eric Idle. Courtenay was one of my least favourite authors, and The Power of One was one of my least favourite books. As a South African I found the white saviour trope in his books nauseating. (Yes, I've read more than one, because a friend who loved the books begged me to stick with it.)

What do you do with these things that get handed down to you? How important is this to you? If it's not important, in that your real connection to it was that it belonged to someone you love, consider taking photos of it and then letting it go to someone who will appreciate it. Of course, I say this as someone who is incredibly nostalgic and would have difficulty doing just that. I have quite a collection of things that belonged to my grandparents that I do not use or display, but can't quite get rid of yet. I've also had others over the last 18 months that I've finally been able to let go.
