Our house cleaner is coming today and it will be her last visit before the holidays, so I'll be giving her a holiday tip today. (If it matters, she works for herself, not a service.)
It seems like tipping the cost of a cleaning is the standard but dang, that's kind of a lot. In our case, it's $160 per cleaning and I don't spend that much on gifts for anyone but our immediate family, parents, siblings and nieces/nephews.
How much do you tip your cleaner at the holidays? I'm thinking of $100 instead of $160 but don't want to be a cheapskate so will probably do $160 anyway lol

It does seem like a lot.
I'm wondering about this too. I have them (it's a business and 2 of them come) coming on Thursday but it's only the 2nd time they will have been here. It seems a bit excessive to have to tip a full cleaning ($175) when I've only just begun using them.
I'm not quite sure what to do here.

Yes, I tip a full cleaning. I figure I'm helping to pay for time off for her vacation(s) every year, as most employers would.
However, my new housecleaner is coming on Wednesday, this will be her 4th visit (every other week) since she started. I am struggling with what to do.

I have a new housekeeper, she has come once for a deep clean and should come once again before Christmas, I am also unsure what to do.

We give ours month's salary as a Christmas bonus. However, our cleaner is much less expensive than the prices ya'll are quoting. She's also been with us almost 20 years. If we were paying $160-175 a week, we certainly wouldn't be doing a month's bonus. However, my new housecleaner is coming on Wednesday, this will be her 4th visit (every other week) since she started. I am struggling with what to do. In that case I might give 25-50% of a visit, depending on how much I liked her cleaning and how badly I wanted to keep her. A good housecleaner is worth their weight in gold IMO.

Yes we tip her the cost of a full cleaning. Ours isn’t as expensive as yours.

That is helpful. She's charging me primo, or is it premo, pricing, and compared to my old cleaner who also did a great job and worked for me for 3+ years (but was terribly unreliable so we finally parted ways) I think I'm overpaying. But then again, knowing that she'll arrive at 1:30 every other Wednesday is definitely worth something. I think that I do need to look into other housecleaner's servicesin January or February to see if I can't find someone a little less expensive. My current housecleaner is earning more per hour than I ever expected a housecleaner to make. I remember when we had a housecleaner thread a few months ago how shocked I was to see how much more I'm paying for my one person/2 bedroom/2 bath condo than many of you in your multi-person, many more square feet households. For example, I pay more than busy, and she's about 3 hours from me. Granted COL is high here (but it is there too)...so there's that.

I am super happy with our cleaner so I pay the rate but it only takes her 3-3.5 hours to clean (only 1800 sf) so she averages about $50/hr from us. And yes, that’s gross so I know taxes and expenses take a big chunk, but that’s a pretty decent wage.

We did. Plus paid her during COVID lockdown because she is an Angel and fixes my life.

I’ve had the same ones for a long time and I think they charge me less than most. So I give a generous gift card and also pay for the week after Christmas which I tell them to take off. I appreciate them a don’t want to lose them.

2 week’s pay. So if they come every other week it would be one cleaning fee, but if they come every week it would be 2 extra cleaning fees. That’s what I’ve always done and is pretty standard here.
Eta - I don’t view it as a “present” but instead a yearly bonus.

We pay our house cleaner $145 per cleaning and she comes every two weeks. We always give her an extra $145 the first time she cleans in December.

I’ll also add that while I’ve always done 2 weeks some more generous people I know do a month’s pay. I’m in a similar situation as MichyM where we just started with new people so I’m not sure what I will do but assuming they have been with us all year and I’m happy with them I’d probably up it to a month next year.

Eta - I don’t view it as a “present” but instead a yearly bonus. That is exactly how I look at it. I pay by Venmo, so I always tell my housekeeper as she leaves after that first housekeeping in December, "I'm paying you a little extra this time since it's the end of the year." The next time she comes I usually give her a very small Christmas present, such as homemade goods. My house cleaner is very pleasant and professional. I want her to know I value her work (thus the yearly bonus) and I really like her (thus the small Christmas present).

Yes. Mine comes every other week and I double her payment that week (which will actually be tomorrow - so instead of 150.00, I'm giving her 300.00.) She's a lovely, reliable, honest person and I appreciate all she does for us.

Oh, no. I think I may have done this wrong. I did not know about the holiday tip as I've just recently gotten housecleaners. There are two of them and they come every two weeks and charge me $85 per cleaning. I bought both of them Target gift cards for $40 each. They are set to come on Wednesday so someone let me know if I should tip cash instead or if these gift cards will work as they are approximately the amount of the cleaning.

There is no right or wrong answer- I tip what fits my budget and not what Ann Landers or anyone else says.
Your $40 a person is fine since you pay $85 a week for 2 people.

You didn’t do anything wrong. However, to allow them to use the money how they’d like, I personally would save the GCs to use myself and give them cold, hard cash

I think any bonus or tip should be cash. I get a yearly bonus and if they gave it in the form of a gift card I’d not be pleased lol. And I don’t even enjoy shopping at Target.
That being said, your target gift cards sound generous for someone who just started and I’d guess they’d really appreciate them so do what feels right for you.

I also split the cost of the cleaning in two as their tips because there are two of them. Some years it's been a gift card to Target or Walmart, some years cash.

This thread makes me want a housekeeper.... Although maybe I will tip myself... 😂 There has to be something I could gift myself.

Yes a full one.
She is somewhat retired, but we have had her for 10+ years and I hate the thought of finding someone else we trust.
She still comes to us, but has dropped a lot of folks.

my cleaner has come for over 10 yrs.. I supported her through the pandemic and I usually get her a bonus equal to a cleaning fee (she comes every two weeks). so $175 extra. she is so good and puts up with all my crap.

I don't, but the person who I pay to clean for me is a family member. So she gets what I normally give her, and a nice gift at Christmas... as in more than I'll spend on my other cousins.

Yes, I double the pay on her last cleaning before Christmas, which will be tomorrow. I pay $180 per cleaning (every other week). She's been cleaning our house for 23 years now and we've been through a lot together!

We provide a bonus of one cleaning's worth. Our housecleaner comes twice a month and charges $100 each time so the bonus is an extra $100.

I give mine an extra day’s pay at her birthday and for Christmas. Actually, today I debated paying her double, because her husband does occasional yard work and also odd jobs for me. I didn’t, but I think I’ll start giving him a birthday gift, too. jeremysgirl, I think you’re fine giving them the Target cards this year. If you keep them, I’d give them cash next year.

I love my cleaner, every time she comes it's like Christmas for me. I used to do it all by myself, as well as the grocery shopping, cooking, laundry, and had a full time job and 2 kids. I told my husband if we didn't get a cleaner I'd leave him.
She's been coming now every two weeks for over 14 years. I paid her during covid, even though she didn't come, and also pay her an extra payment at Christmas. YES, I could save money, but she's great, I trust her and she does a really good job. I am forever thankful she is in my life. ....and yes my husband does do a lot more now (although it took time to train him). Although sadly not the cooking.
