I love to look at the big homes, but I can't grasp my mind around how many rooms they have. If you could design your home, how many rooms would you have?
I would like to have: - Eat-in kitchen with a nice island - Family room - Bedroom #1 - Master bedroom - Bedroom #2 - Guest room - Bedroom #3 - Office - Bedroom #4 - Art room (nice if it was a second master suite w/it's own bathroom) - 4-Car garage. Space for two cars, and the other two spaces for a home gym/workshop. - Formal dining and living room are optional for me.
So, I guess for me, this is basically a 4 bedroom house with a huge garage.

I have a 2 bedroom, 2 bathroom place. 2 stories.
Size wise it's fine, though I wouldn't complain if my kitchen was a little larger. I also wouldn't mind it all being on one level as I age. The only extra room I would absolutely LOVE to have would be a sunroom with access to the outdoors for me and all my plants. I would live in there most of the time!

Our current house isn't big, but does have 3 living spaces and I don't want to give any of them up.
The living room is for reading and puzzling, the family room is for TV/relaxing in front of the fire and the upstairs bonus room is the kids TV/gaming room.
When we finally get down to just DH and I, my ideal space would one level and still have a couple living spaces.

Primary bedroom, bedroom for son, guest room, all with attached bathrooms.
Two dedicated offices, with attached powder rooms.
Great room with large dining space that flows together but is set off a bit, generous walk-in pantry and butler’s pantry.
Indoor gym.
Large secondary entertaining space with room for ping pong, air hockey, and seating space for media viewing. Kitchenette/bar.
Three car garage + shop.
With the exception of the guest room and shop, that would all get used daily.
ETA: I can't believe I forgot a semi-massive mudroom/dog wash station/storage area between the garage and kitchen.

We just moved last year and our goal was few rooms, but large rooms. We didn't want 6 rooms that rarely get used. We wanted a room for purpose and to be used regularly. We ended up with a 3-bedroom with a bonus room, and its been absolutely heaven!

Anyone remember the TV show Family with Meredith Baxter, Kristy McNichol, etc? I LOVED that house, always wanted a staircase that came down into the kitchen.

The house we moved into not quite a year ago is just about perfect
ground floor has kitchen with breakfast nook, dining room, living room (could be a smidge bigger or a better layout), bedroom w/ensuite (a better closet would have been nice) and my craft room plus a utility hall with a powder room and an attached 2-car garage (for 2 subcompacts, lol - we're turning it into a gym). The one thing I would really change is the pantry - it's small, deep, and narrow and hard to use.
1st floor has one bedroom with an ensuite plus 2 additional bedrooms that share a jack-n-jill (we use those two as library/guestrooms) and a bonus room (DH's space).
We added a separate garage for cars and a workshop. There's also a screen porch off the living room and tons of storage - 2 hall closets upstairs, two understair closets (one under the main stairs in the foyer and one under the back stairs in teh garage) and a utility/storage room off the garage plus two walk-in attics - storage is HUGE for me, our last place had exactly one closet/bedroom and NO additional storage

We ended up with a 3-bedroom with a bonus room, and its been absolutely heaven! we were exactly the opposite - smaller rooms with WALLS not great rooms/open floor plans was what we were looking for. But all of our spaces get used daily except the guest rooms (and since they double as libraries they are used more often than many guest rooms) and the screen porch (it's used when weather permits)

I'm moving from a four bedroom, two and a half bath two story house next year ... downsizing because I live alone ... I'm in my 50's and I am looking long term so it's going to be an apartment condo for me ... one level with two bedrooms and two full bathrooms ... one living area with a small dining area and a nice kitchen ... probably won't be more than 1100 sq ft ... I don't want to clean anything bigger than that anymore! I look forward to not having to deal with outside maintenance

Definitely one story with basement. Stairs suck as you get older lol
We currently have a 2 bedroom condo with 1-1/2 bathrooms. Huge master bedroom with 3 closets, good sized second bedroom, decent sized living room.
Id like a larger kitchen, and a second full bath. Id also like windows on more than one side. We are thinking that when my mom passes, we might move into her place.

I want all my rooms on one level next time because I won't always be able to do the stairs. Kitchen, dining, living area. I'm not a big fan of open plan which I have now. I'd rather have the kitchen more shielded from the other rooms since I'm a bit of a messy cook.
Master bedroom, guest room with bath, studio, small office and a workspace for DH. I think we would use part of the garage for the workspace so when the house was sold, it was a 3 bedroom plus office.
Oh, and I'm not wasting money on a fireplace next time. We never use the one we have.

My husband and I were just talking about this as both are kids are at university now and we were wondering if/when we'd want to downsize. He never wants to move, so we'll probably rattle around in this too big house forever - but ideally I think I'd want a master, 2 guest rooms, office, gym and great room. I do like a formal dining room, but it's not a must. The living room aka music room could totally go - although I'll never convince my husband to sell the piano. I do wish we had a main floor guest room - that's been such an issue as our parents' have aged - if I could only have one thing that'd be it!

4 good size bedrooms, all en-suite, family bathroom and downstairs shower room. I have 4 beds now but 2 are small and no en-suites. Dressing room. Utility - bit bigger than I have now. Large entrance porch which I have now and wouldn’t be without. Large kitchen/ diner with walk-in larder. Separate Living room. Office.

Yes, on the bathtub in the master! We’ve never used ours. It is huge with jets, but it would take so much water to fill it. I want to remove it, replace it with something smaller, and make our shower larger. And we have never used our fireplaces either. And I agree on lots of storage!

Right now a bigger issue for me than what rooms I'd like to have, but don't, are which rooms I'd like to have work better for me that I already have. Previous owners embraced "open concept" in our house before it was all the rage, and that has caused us some issues now. Rooms that used to have walls and doors between them are now wide open to one another and it really cuts down on how useful they can be, because you get people in all of them and the noise level becomes so ridiculous that someone has to give up on what they're trying to do simply due to the insanity of it all. We have a dining room, sitting room, and living room that are just wide open to one another. So you have 2 rooms that could be great quiet spaces that become super loud if anyone is watching TV in one room or playing a game in one room or using a computer in one room. So I'd really just like the darn walls back, thanks. And someday we'll do that, but for now, the rooms just don't work as nicely as they should, Likewise, there is an extra room upstairs that was added later and is experiencing some structural issues right now, plus it needs rewiring. So it's supposed to be my office someday, but right now it's basically a big empty "neener-neener" in my face every time I walk by it. So if we could magically immediately fix those rooms, then the only thing we don't have that I would certainly enjoy, would be a sunroom or enclosed porch/screened porch. We do have front & back porches, but I don't like enclosing part of an original front open porch, so that's definitely always staying open. The back porch was added later, so I'd be okay with enclosing it, but the layout leading to it is odd right now, so we'd have to play around to make that work if we ever went that route.

I would downsize to 2 master bedrooms, a loft for guests, a galley kitchen, dining area and living room. Then I would want a large sun room. Ideally the large masters would each have a large sitting area that Dh and I could have our office space and space for hobbies. Other than the loft it would all be ground floor. There would be a bath with shower for visitors or guests but downstairs so people dont have to trapse into any private areas to use it.
It would be an end unit townhome with entrance on the side, a very small fenced yard and only one shared wall preferably with garages between the units or a small walkway separating the units. I would love it to be freestanding if at all possible to avoid neighbor noise, but connected just on the garage walls would be ok. Laundry room/closet near one of the bedrooms or just inside the entrance from the garage but not in the garage
That is my current dream home

Anyone remember the TV show Family with Meredith Baxter, Kristy McNichol, etc? I LOVED that house, always wanted a staircase that came down into the kitchen. TV houses love to include back staircases, but in real life they aren't nearly as common, which is a bummer. I did tour a house once with a front back staircase and I was totally on board to buy it just for that, but alas, the back yard flooded like crazy pretty much all of the time, so that was a "no". Big old houses tend to have them, but then they're more house than I need or want. So no back staircase for me so far. But I do still love them. Even super-steep old ones in some old houses.

I just need one decent sized bedroom, 1 bathroom, kitchen and a single car garage. I have a traditional 1,400 square foot 3 bed/2 bath house with a double car garage. It is plenty big. I could do without the living room just fine.

I’d like one more bedroom, so 4 bedrooms. 3 bathrooms is all I can handle for cleaning. That will have to do. Then I’d like a living room in addition to our family room, room over the garage, kitchen, and dining room. Oh, and I miss having a basement so much! Does that count as a room?
So, 13?

Even super-steep old ones in some old houses. typically backstairs were for servants so they usually only show up in houses that date back to when live-in servants were common and that were built for families well-enough off to have them. That said - I have backstairs in my c.1980 house but they are from the garage to the bonus room (which has access to the upper hallway)- they were awesome when we were moving in because they are wider than the front stairs so easier to bring the furniture upstairs. We call them the stairs of death though because they are steeper than typical, don't have a railing, and lack a landing at the top - you step directly down from the bonus room (or the attic access on either side) onto the top step.

4 bedrooms - en suite in each main bathroom 1 study 1 craft/sewing 1 gym 1 theatre / gaming room kitchen/dining - must have a butler's pantry! laundry 2 lounge rooms al fresco 4 car garage
I could maybe combine the study/craft/sewing room seeing that I am the only one who ever uses my current study/craft room.

I moved from a 1600 sq ft house to one about 600 sq ft. I would love to have more space. My realistic-fantasy house would have: 3 bedrooms, all en-suite, with one on the ground floor for DD when she visits One very large craft/Lego room with an extra desk for jigsaw puzzles A dining kitchen A utility room, with a dog shower in it Front and rear vestibules A living room with a wood burning stove or real fireplace My last house had all of these except for the utility room. Oh, and because it was 120 years old, it only had one bathroom.

We’re building a house that has 2 bedrooms and the laundry room in the main level. While we can handle stairs now, easily, we’re thinking of the future.
The downstairs basement will be finished with a bedroom, full bathroom and family room. There will also be some storage in the basement.
Edited to add that we’re having showers in the two main bathrooms and a tub in the guest bathroom downstairs.

My home now is pretty much my perfect home. When we bought it, we planned on it being our forever home.
That said, I could downsize and be ok. We have 4000 sqft and that's a lot for just DH & I now. Also in an ideal world, I would switch my scrapbook room to the main level and I would put the guest room upstairs where my scrapbook room is. One day we might but for now, it just makes more sense for it to stay where it is.

We just bought our last home and it's pretty close to a dream home for me, although I am the first to admit it still feels a little too big. It's funny that most people downsize, but we spent most of our marriage in military housing, then very small houses as our careers progressed. But we're more successful now, and our needs changed in a house. So for our last house, we finally got the room we always wanted, and then some. In our former house, we were crammed into 1500 square feet with way too many small flights of stairs. Since the pandemic, it looks as if we both are going to work from home for possibly the rest of our careers, and we have a daughter who may not ever move out. We were looking into building, but we were already getting close to being priced out of 1800-square-foot homes that were probably too small for our needs, were open concept (HATE open concept), and were on tiny lots with no room between neighbors. For about the same price, we found a 3000-square-foot home with a finished basement, bringing it to almost 5,000 square feet of living space. We have a pretty modest-sized living room, huge eat-in kitchen, separate dining room, powder room, mud/laundry room, and an office for me on the main level. And there are lots of closets tucked in this level. Upstairs there are three small bedrooms with two full baths, and a master bedroom, bathroom, and walk-in closet with another laundry area. Honestly, the master bedroom area is a waste of space to me because I don't lie around luxuriating in that area, and no one needs that much space in the master suite. In the basement, there's a small living room area and second kitchen with everything except a stove, a very small office, half bathroom, storage area, and an open room DH will use as his hobby area. Most importantly, there is enough open space in this house to put in an elevator eventually, which DH is working with the VA on because they will partially fund it as he is rated at 100% disabled through them. So far, the only room we don't use on a regular basis is the dining room, but I don't regret it because we have a large formal dining room furniture set that I won't get rid of, and we use it during gatherings. We also intend to entertain more in this house, so I think it will get used. The downstairs area gets used for entertaining with my DD's friends, and the spare bedroom upstairs is getting regular use now that we got it painted and set up a bed in there. I remember commenting on the house as we walked through with our realtor how well the rooms were laid out for our needs. So many houses we looked at had a lot of square footage, but it just wasn't in a usable configuration for our needs. This one was and is. There is work to be done to this house, of course, but the neighborhood is amazing and I could never afford to build in a place like this. So, I guess this is a fantasy home for me.

Kitchen that has a dine in breakfast nook
Living room/family room
Dinning room that is connected to kitchen, so not a formal dining room
Sensory room for ds
Master bedroom with master bathroom connected
DS bedroom
DD bedroom
Craft/office room
Bathroom for 2 bedrooms
1/2 bathroom near living room
3 car garage - 2 car connected for vehicles, single for dh's wood workshop
And in the 2 car garage, the laundry area. I am NOT a fan of in home laundry room.

Right now I could use 3 extra rooms...we have my DD and family here because of a storm. It's pretty crowded.
But permanently I would like a big room for my crafting stuff, and I would like a couple of dedicated spare bedrooms. I'm tired of shuffling stuff around when people stay over.
