It is so difficult to know when you should get checked out. Who hasn’t hit their head at some point? So sad.

How bizarre. Like Natasha Richardson. That was my exact same thought! I have no idea if they could have been saved if they had gotten immediate medical help though. I wonder what he fell on.

It is so difficult to know when you should get checked out. Who hasn’t hit their head at some point? So sad. This is so true. I had a serious head injury to the back of my head as the result of a fall. I know from experience that a person cannot think clearly in that situation. Fortunately for me, there were people around who recognized the trouble I was in, and got me immediate medical attention. It could have been a different outcome if I was alone, because I didn’t know the seriousness of my injury. I’m so sad for his family and friends. What a tragedy.

What a tragic accident. Head injuries are so scary and can happen so easily.
My friend suddenly started having horrible headaches. After a few trips to urgent care and her PCD, she finally got a brain MRI. Turns out she had a brain bleed. She did not have any kind of accident. After talking over all the possible ways it could have happened, it was determined she got it from riding a roller coaster and hitting her head on the overhead bars while riding. Most people hit their heads on those bars, I know I do!, so it was a startling realization. The doctor told her she used one of her 9 lives.

It just seems so incredibly unlucky and sad. I had a blow to my head that knocked me over a few years ago. I am pretty sure that I had a concussion and when I read things like this I feel like I was foolish not to go to an ER. I just figured they'd tell me I had a concussion and that would be that, so I didn't go.

we have had several people close to us die recently from falling and hitting their heads. people falling doing ordinary everyday things, hitting their head and dying (not immediately, but shortly thereafter).
be careful out there!

It is so difficult to know when you should get checked out. Who hasn’t hit their head at some point? So sad. It is so sad. Locally several years ago an elementary school had a child hit her head when she fell off the swings. She didn't tell a teacher or anyone and when she went home she went to take a nap and passed away. Head injuries can be so deceptive. As a teacher I have seen a lot of kid falls, one little kid barely got hit by a bouncy ball but ended up with a concussion, yet other kids fall backwards onto a hard tile floor and are fine. As adults we tend to think no big deal and just carry on. Probably makes it even harder for his family thinking that this might have been prevented.

How sad! I know someone who fell in the bathroom, hit their head, and died. The person was home alone too. The inside of the skull has no shock absorbers. The brain just bounces around in the skull. Maybe we should all walk around with helmets on.

When I heard he hit his head, I immediately thought it could have been the hotel headboard. I’ve hit my head on those wall-mounted headboards. They have no give. It was the back of his head. Last night on the news they said it could have been the headboard. Tragic.

This happened last year to my husband. He had a vasovagal response in the bathroom in the middle of the night and fell and hit his head really hard. He was all “I’m fine, I’m fine” and one of our daughters said “who was the actress that hit her head skiing…?” And he said “Okay, who’s driving me to the hospital?” He was fine - he had a solid concussion - and the ER docs praised him for coming in. They took it really seriously - too many people don’t.

peabay I’m so glad your husband is fine. It’s a scary situation for sure. Immediately after my fall, my co-workers knew I needed help when I told them “I just need to throw up, then I’ll be fine” My first thought about Bob Saget was that he fell in the room and laid down because he was dizzy. I was very dizzy for about a week after my injury.

I had a weird event when home with DS(3). So weird that I called DH because I was afraid of passing out alone with him and missing DD's K pick-up. I NEVER called DH like that, so he dropped everything to come. Everything I described to my PCP pointed to brain bleed but I hadn't fallen or hit my head in any way. I was sent for a CT scan and while talking to the scan techs one of them asked about my vehicle and the lightbulb went off. The day before after unloading the van I'd beaned myself on the back of my head when pulling down the door and standing up at the same time. FWIW, it sounds like Bob didn't wake up or have any awareness of what happened to him.

Two years ago I slipped on ice and fell, landing entirely on the back of my head (no bruising anywhere else on my body). God that hurt. I was on vacation in Quebec with my adult son, and once he got me back to our rental a couple dozen feet away, I apparently couldn't tell him where we were and the like. I do remember climbing the stairs to get to the front door. I remember sitting in a chair holding ice to the back of my head. Nothing else. He ended up calling the EMTs and I was taken to the hospital. Apparently I lost about 45 minutes in all this.
I was in the hospital for the rest of the day (of vacation, boo-hiss), and gave my son (good-natured) crap about all of it.
I owe him an apology.

Head injuries really are scary. At my last job, my boss's boss slipped on ice and hit the back of her head. She said it wasn't even that hard of a hit, but it must have done some serious damage. She couldn't be in bright lights, she couldn't focus, she had constant headaches. She finally had to quit her job because of it. And there's nothing they can do for her. I guess she's lucky she didn't die, but I know she has become very withdrawn and depressed since this happened.

When I was 4 yrs old, my friend was in a car crash w/her grandma. All minor injuries, so they thought. My mom and I went to see her right afterward. I remember we were swinging and she started vomiting. Her parents eventually took her to the ER, but she died. She had hit her head on the window My oldest son was a soccer goalie all thru high school. I had one rule- if you get hit in the head and so much as stumble, or wobble, we are going to the ER. And his coach knew my rule too. We did end up going about 1-2 times a season. He had some pretty bad concussions. This was long before concussion protocols.

I have a very sloped driveway and have always been afraid of it when it’s icy.
The driveway next door is much less sloped than mine but the neighbor slipped on the ice and fell backwards, hitting her head, when taking out some trash to put in the can. She ended up in the ICU for a couple days and lost her sense of smell.
The house on the other side of me has a flat driveway. My neighbor slipped on the ice, slid with leg under one of the cars and broke her leg.
I have a very healthy respect for how fast one can go down, and the effects it can have. And living alone, you don’t have anyone to watch and notice if things aren’t right.

This is how we lost Mom in 2021.
She fell and hit her head in the floor at home. From the bleed, it was the side of her head. She didn’t tell anyone until the headache became too much. By the time she reached the hospital, she was behaving weird and begging for a pain pill. (She was on some heavy duty pain meds and was accustomed to regulating her pain as needed. I believe they didn’t treat her in a timely manner, as “she was seen as seeking pain meds.” When they finally took images of her brain, there was a bleed severe enough it had shifted her brain severely.
The entire ordeal was a mess due to a few events that had taken place.

And living alone, you don’t have anyone to watch and notice if things aren’t right. This is so interesting to me, because I also lost my sense of smell. I was walking across the parking lot into work, and slipped on ice and hit my head. My doctor said that I must have lost consciousness because the force of the fall cracked the back of my skull and the front of my brain hit the front of my skull. The contusion on the front of my brain must have caused the loss of smell. My sense of smell did eventually return, but it took many months, and for a few months, all I could smell was some horrible burning smell. It took over a year before smells started to smell "normal" again. I have no memory of about 4 hours from that day. I was in ICU for 2 days, but was very dizzy and on pain meds and anti nausea meds for almost 2 weeks. It was a very long recovery with lots of doctor appointments and follow up MRIs. I still have chronic headaches and insomnia as a result. The news of Bob Saget's cause of death has hit me a little hard because his injury has similarities to mine, with much different outcomes. It has reminded me how fortunate I am, because my situation could have very easily been fatal.

A couple of years ago, I fell at work and hit my forehead HARD on the tile/cement floor. I had quite a headache and a visible lump. I came home, but was afraid to go to sleep. So I called my primary care physician….LOL….no I didn’t. I asked the Peas. And y’all said get my butt to the ER. So I did. I was fine, but I’m glad I went (even though it cost almost $1,000. And I didn’t even have a scan. Just talked to a doctor).
Anyway….the doctor told me that injuries to the back of the head are much more concerning. I guess we don’t have as much protection back there. Our foreheads are very thick. Still….I will take any head injury seriously.
