I’m also a teacher. The symptoms you are describing is causing all kinds of red flags for me pointing to sexual abuse.

Report what you know to child protective services and let them make the determination.
Every training I’ve been through for mandatory reporters says if you have a suspicion, report it. You don’t have to KNOW something happened, you just have to have a concern.

I am not a teacher, but I know plenty of them, and have been on this board long enough that this feels all kinds of wrong. Something has changed in Susan's homelife, and I doubt it is a good change. I hope for her sake that you can do something to make it stop.

Susan needs help. There’s not much of the school year left to find out what’s going on. I would document as much as you can and speak to the principal,

If you have seen something that is worrying you it is important to report it. She needs help, whether it is abuse or something else going on she needs someone to help her.

Lawyers in my district have advised, “You are a mandated reporter, not an investigator.” You have the red flags, let the professional investigators take it from there.

Report it. Just call and voice all your concerns. It’s not your job to investigate, but if you have that feeling, you must report.

Have you discussed your concerns with the principal or social worker?

Have you spoken to the principal previously on this situation including about speaking to the mother? I used to work in a school and there were lots of incidents where the parents lied through their teeth. Your description definitely sends up red flags. Be prepared that the principal may not see it your way. You should still follow your instinct. That happened at our school. A child that normally had behavioral issues, actually got worse one day. The teacher that I worked with spoke to the principal and it was poo poo'd. The next day I happened to see the bottom of his back as he leaned forward. It was bruised. I immediately told the teacher and she brought him to the nurse. His entire back was purple! An ambulance was called as were the police. The police immediately went to his apartment and the mother's girlfriend was arrested within hours! She went straight to jail. Had we waited because the principal didn't agree with us, a more severe outcome could have ensued. I hope that your principal makes the right decision. Please come back on here to update us.

No advice but I agree, something is really off with this situation. I'm glad you are going to step in and report this issue.

I am a mandated reporter, and I would have already made a report. It’s your job to report suspicious concerns (they are highly suspicious) and CPS and the police to investigate.
Call today.

Make the report. Discuss with your principal, counselor, and anyone else who may have insight, but ultimately, you have to make the report.

I've seen some horrific abuse cases in my career and sometimes wondered why someone didn't say something earlier. While this could possibly be explained as something else (not sure what though), it points to something that could be much worse. I have seen parents who come off as the sweetest parents who let their partner abuse their child. You just really never, ever know. Call.

I agree with the others, call child protective services. From the reactions of Mom, I wonder if she is in denial.

I agree with everyone else. You need to call CPS. Hopefully it is nothing, but better safe then sorry. Something is clearly going on with her.

I’m in the you are a mandated reporter and this is a case to make the report. I know you’ve said you’ve talked to her parent and that’s good. Have you talked with your principal or school counselor? Have you talked with the boys’ parent about the change in his behavior?

Please don't let your principal talk you out of it or tell you they will take care of it. I know my principal wouldn't do this but some will call the parents about it first, putting the child in more danger.

Hoping you reported it today. Even if you tell the principal/counselor, you are still mandated to make the report yourself.
There are both legal and ethical ramifications for you and who knows what for the child.

I am a child & youth care worker, so another mandated reporter. The poster who said you're not an investigator is correct. File the report & let them investigate
