I will be on a cruise in 1.5 weeks. Anyone in the Sitka, Juneau or Ketchikan area? I know it may be along shot, but thought I would check and see. It would be fun to meet up.

A beautiful area to visit for sure! I no longer live in Alaska, but when I did I wasn't even close to the Panhandle (aka SE Alaska)

When we did our cruise to Alaska, we visited some high school friends who were stationed in Juneau.

I'm going on an Alaskan cruise in August with RCL. So excited because I've always wanted to see that area! And hoping that August is fairly warm there

Where is everyone leaving from?
We're leaving from Vancouver, going one-way north and doing a five day cruisetour after that.

If any of you Alaska cruisers are leaving from Seattle, you'll go right past my house on the way out of Puget Sound!

When I lived in AK, I was in Sitka. I still swear up and down that there is no prettier place than Sitka AK on a sunny day! Wishing you a sunny Sitka day.

ours is leaving out of Seattle. I've been to vancouver a bunch of times but never been to seattle, so we're going to spend the weekend before our cruise
another fun thing, a guy I was friends with in high school is the cruise director on our cruise! It will be good to see him again, I think it's been almost 20 years since I saw him last

Anything you can recommend w an 11 year old? I think we are going to take the shuttle in to town and walk around. I found a walking tour we can follow. Then I found a seafood restaurant on the pier by the cruise terminal for him to try clam chowder and fresh crab!

Then I found a seafood restaurant on the pier by the cruise terminal for him to try clam chowder and fresh crab! Totem Park is easy to walk to from town. The little museum is very informative. St Michael's Cathedral is smack dab in the middle of town. Neat history. The Westmark Hotel has a restaurant, called The Raven Dining Room and a lounge area that serves food called The Katadaan Lounge, it has a deck with a great view of Sitka sound. Next to Harry Race Pharmacy, there is a set of stairs that takes you up to Castle Hill. There are cannons up there. This site is where Russian Alaska was handed over to the United States in 1867, and is also where the first flag with 49 stars was flown after Alaska became a state. There is a raptor center and a bear sanctuary. Salmon are likely still running in Ketchican, salmon means bears, in the middle of the river, picking them off. It would be worthwhile to take a plane tour to see them. If you are hikers, Deer Mountain is our favorite ever hike! You'll need to take a taxi or uber to get to the trailhead. If you do the hike, I recommend you arrange a time for the taxi, or uber to come pick you up from the trailhead, as there will be several other cruise members who will also do the hike, and need to get back to the ship and there are only 2 taxis and I don't know how many ubers. In Juneau we took a helicopter up to one of the glaciers, not Mendenhal that is right there by town. They will put you in parkas, gloves and crampon boots. The helicopter ride is exhilarating and walking on the glacier is incredible. Enjoy your visit, the whole of Southeast Alaska is lovely.

We're doing an Alaska cruise this summer, too. Roundtrip from Vancouver, ports are Juneau, Sitka and Haines. Praying for a gorgeous day in Sitka, but also know that is unlikely to be the case!

"... spokesperson for Holland America, said the reduction in visits to Anchorage was due to the cruise line selling four ships by mid-2020. The company now operates 11 vessels." I didn't realize that they were the only cruise line coming to Anchorage. Personally, I like Seward and Homer better. Whittier is just ok, nothing really there. Anchorage is/was a one day stop. Not much to see in Anchorage other than the museum in my opinion. It's just like any big city.

I assumed everyone stopped there. I actually found the stop in Anchorage to be a bit strange, because there are so many epic stops in Alaska, however, I have a friend that lives there, so we visited and it was lovely.

We'll be on HAL in August, RT from Seattle. My husband is dying for this trip . . . I'm of the "meh" school of thought but am looking forward to seeing a part of our world that I've never seen except for on TV. Stops are Juneau, Sitka, Ketchikan, Victoria.
Following this thread with great interest!

Following this thread with great interest! My recommendation is when you are Juneau, before you head off the ship, let everyone else go. Then go to the buffet (breakfast or lunch depending on your schedule) and take it to the tables outside the buffet at the back of the ship. You are surrounded by the mountains, the water and fresh air. There is something magical about those mountains. I have done this on every sailing and we will do it again on this one.

They have (or had) shuttles from the cruise docks to downtown in St Thomas for $5US pp one way when i was there pre covid. We just wandered around that time. I have also done an island tour there that we went out to Megans Bay and Coral World. I havent been to St Maarten. Their private island is a fun beach day. I hope you 2 have an awesome time together!
