This is an interesting thread! My grandparents were Alexander (Sandy) and Annie, John (Jack) and Emily. My kids are Julia and Elliot. There was an elderly auntie on XDH’s side called Julia, but DD wasn’t named after her, ‘twas just coincidence.

I think region/culture plays a part too. My maternal grandmother was Ruth and her husband was Charles. They were from Alabama and had 10 kids. 4 boys named Beason, Pearcy Raymond and Holly Day (because he was born on Christmas)and 6 girls named Lucille, Dora Rae, Leta Mae, Wilma, Charlene and Virginia. Meanwhile my paternal grandmother, Lucille, who married a Lawrence came from a lineage from the east coast and ultimately through Illinois. Her mother was a socialite (think cotillions and long newspaper write ups). So Lucille and Lawrence named their son (my dad)... Lawrence Jr.

Elmer and Geraldine (Gerry). As a kid I heard them referring to each other as "Mama" and "Papa" .. which confused the heck out of me bc they were not each others parents. And then I grew up, had my own children and started calling DH "Dad" rather than his name.
Wheeler and Mattie Rae

Mother’s parents - Mallard and Catherine Earlene Dad’s parents - LeeHugh and Sara My children - Catherine, Zane, Kent Earlene was named for her father, Earl. She had older brothers, so I’m not sure why they didn’t name one of them Earl. LeeHugh’s birth certificate has his name as Lee Hugh, but when he started school the teacher called him by both names and it eventually was written as one name. My dad’s middle name is Hulin, after his dad.

I was going to do this and then I thought I'd check something. I typed just my grandma and grandpa's first names into Google and it pulled up all kinds of info about my family. You could pretty easily find out my last name.

You could pretty easily find out my last name. Yeah, this was my thought too. Some of the names on this thread are pretty distinctive, and there is so much ancestry info online these days.

Edward and Hannah. William (“Red” - for obvious reasons) and Merle (who preferred “Muriel.”)
Merle’s mother was “Ora Dokie.” Not a nickname. Just a kooky southern name.
