Been married 18 years and have no attachment to keeping my dress. It's been in a vacuumed sealed bag since I took it off and it just lives on a top shelf in my bedroom closet. Before I just donate it somewhere does anyone know of any places that take items like this? I'm just outside of MPLS if that helps at all.

I am in the same boat. Married 25 years. My daughter would never be able to fit into it. I would like to keep the veil in case she would wear that. I spent over $1,000 on it and actually think the style is such that someone would wear it today.

I intended to make christening a dress out of mine then I thought maybe one of my DD’s might like it or use parts of us for their wedding dress but that didn’t happen. 32 years it’s been upstairs and I’ve still no idea what I’ll do with it 😊

Well mine got sold when I sold all the stuff in my moms house using an auction service. I walked into her bedroom when everything was set up and was like, oh that's where it went. So I'm no help.

Quite a while back I think I read a thread about a charity that takes unwanted wedding gowns and makes them over into burial gowns for babies that passed away? Here is a link to more information, I believe there are locations in almost every state. nicuhelpinghands.org/programs/angel-gown-program/

After 25 years I took my dress, cut out all the lace (think 80s and lots of lace) and saved just the lace for a 'maybe' future craft project. Maybe something for a grandbaby or another wedding. Maybe attach some of it on the inside of a dress. I don't know. But tossed the rest of it.

If you are planning on donating it- give it to a thrift store. The thrift store I work for has sold many to brides on tight budgets, or as costumes for theaters, or they even get put out with the Halloween costumes.

I have my dress, my moms, and my MIL’s.
My moms dress (mid-1940’s) is made from eyelet fabric, very dated, and not in a good way. High neck, scoop ruffle from shoulder to shoulder. I’m thinking of making Christmas ornaments from it and sending them to my brothers and their families.
My MIL’s dress is a lovely heavy satin, but it was put back in the box without being cleaned and stored in a basement for 40 years. It’s yellowed badly and stained. My DD is getting married and she wants a simple dress, but she asked around, and getting a dress like that restored and remade can cost upwards of $10,000 around here. That’s a no. And she wants the fun of dress shopping.
My mom took my dress to the cleaners right after the wedding and had it cleaned and professionally preserved. It’s been 44 years since my wedding. We opened the box a while ago for DD to try on, and the dress is horribly stained. I wonder if they didn’t even bother cleaning it, knowing I wouldn’t open it for years. It’s not a bad dress, and could be remade, but DD doesn’t like it. I remember reading in the 90’s about wedding dress cleaners who were replacing expensive wedding dresses with cheap ones when they were preserving them, knowing the bride wasn’t opening the box anything soon.
My problem is that I feel guilty getting rid of any of them. I may do the Christmas ornament thing with all three.

I always thought that I'd like to make christening dresses out of my dress for future grandchildren but doubt that will happen (the dresses, not the grandchildren: one grandchild here with more planned but both DDs are not so much in to the christening thing...). I now have three wedding dress boxes sitting in the guest room closet, mine and two DDs. Oldest DD just bought her first home and I suggested she take her wedding dress. She said "Oh mom, then the other two will be lonely!" LOL, looks like I'll have three dresses hanging around for a l-o-n-g time...

I have seen dresses gifted on Buy Nothing Facebook pages for free. Mine is going to a local Vintage dress store (we married in 1979).

Absolutely nothing wrong with donating to a thrift store.
My DD got married in June, and I could have taken her to any bridal shop with an unlimited budget, and she would not have found a dress she liked as much as the one she found at a local thrift store for something like $60. It was several sizes too big, but she tried it on to see if she liked the style of it, and she fell in LOVE with it. We had alterations done on it, and it fit her perfectly. It was THE DRESS for her.
You never know. Your dress may be THE DRESS for someone else.

I’ve saved mine. I never saved it thinking my daughter would want it. But apparently there are some TikTok’s going around about daughters who have altered them to wear at their rehearsal dinner. She’s not engaged yet, but I think she wants to do it. I think it would be cheaper to give her a couple hundred bucks to buy a new dress, but she’s kind of a sentimental gal.

I joked they looked like Liberace babies bc they had so much sparkle. gar here is what mine looked like:

I have a feeling most of these places are not accepting gowns. I tried for years to do this and it never opened up. Some defiantly are taking them. I sent one in spring and have photos of the gowns made. Communicate with one and see wait times. They have to store them hence the weight. Great cause.

Someone shopping at the Goodwill will love to buy it. Although I picture one of those ladies from Hoarders buying it "just in case" or trying to get her granddaughter to wear it... And it spends the next 20 years covered in cat feces and garbage. 😭
I finally got rid of mine some years ago, but it wasn't anything really special. It had some yellowing of the satin (wasn't professionally sealed) so I pitched it.

I donated my gown to a cancer thrift store. They were very happy to take it off of my hands.

If there are parts of the dress that you really love, it could be repurposed into a purse or a little special occasion clutch bag.

I made my mother's gown for mother of the groom it my brother's wedding and I took several beaded appliques from my mother's wedding dress and sewed them on the jacket she wore over her dress. Afterwards, I took them off her jacket and sewed them on a sweater to wear for New Year's eve.

I have no idea where mine is. My in-laws put it in their cedar closet, but that was seven houses ago; I doubt they still have it.

Grand mother and great grandmother’s wedding dresses were used to make pew bows that all the grandchildren used for their weddings. I wore MIL dress…she took it back after the wedding lol.

Angel gowns repurposes wedding gowns into infant burial gowns. Their website doesn’t say anything about not accepting gowns. angelgowns.us/
