Am I remembering this wrong, or have they shortened up the challenges before each pit stop? And that they each used different skills? I thought there used to be three challenges each episode--one they both had to do, one where they had a choice, and one that one of the pair had to perform (I forget the names of the challenge types). This season there are only two. And one week it all had to do with music. It has always been one Detour (choose between two options and both team members do it together with the ability to switch to the other activity) and one Roadblock (only one team members does the activity) unless a Mega-leg like last week where they saw Phil half-way through and found out it wasn't the Pit Stop. In past years there have been: - Fast Forwards (first team to complete it can head to the Pit Stop and skip the Detour and Roadblock)
- Yield (a team can force another team to stop for a set amount of time)
- U-turn (a team can force another team to complete both Detour options)
- Speed Bumps (task performed only by the last place team of a non-elimination leg)
Anyone else remember the early days of non-elimination legs when the teams had to give up everything except their ID and the clothes they were wearing? And the next season anyone thinking they might be last would layer on all their clothes as they headed to the Pit Stop. I think the location really impacted the type of challenges they could do this week and both Detours were kind of lame. I mean, when they are filling air time with the train ride in and a Lawrence of Arabia type scene, you know they don't have a lot of challenge drama. Even though Molly & Emily are still my favorites, I do like that the winners of each leg has been a different team. Most impressive this week IMHO is Derek & Claire going from the last group at the metal-detector to so, so, so close to winning the leg.

My memory is terrible but last year I started rewatching all of the old seasons starting with the first one (I've been watching this show since they first started airing it), and yes, I do remember when the penalty for arriving last at the mat on a non-elimination leg was that Phil took all of your possessions except for your ID and the clothes you were wearing. One time it was a team I really liked (they were nicknamed the Hippies I think) and one of the guys ran onto the mat barefoot because they'd just come back from a swim into shore. Luckily they'd made some friends amongst the other teams and one team gave them a pair of flip flops. That rule made it really hard to recover.
Then they changed it to Phil just taking all of your money when you arrived at the mat and that included no money being given to start out the next day's racing. I really didn't like that rule at all because it forced the racers to go begging for money to continue the race. It was horrible to see Americans begging in places like India, and other impoverished nations just to get the money for cab fare to the airport. I was relieved to see the new rule of having to do a speed bump during the race come in instead.
I was very disappointed when Hulu decided to delete a great majority of the seasons of Amazing Race instead of keeping them all there-they were such fun to watch while the race wasn't on.

Seems like they have more dancing challenges than ever before. It also seems like the challenges seem a tad harder. I was so sad to see Abby and Will had to drop out because of Covid. They were one of my favorite couples.

I was also sad to see that Will and Abby were the couple that got Covid and had to drop out. I liked them from the start because of Abby's exuberance and utter happiness at being on the race that showed every time they were on camera. I really hope that this team is brought back on another season.
I agree with you cadoodlebug-so many dancing challenges this season! And with 2 professional dancing teams and one professional cheerleading team this gives those teams clear advantages. C'mon Amazing Race-can't you think of different challenges? I did like the alphabet challenge and I have to say the military brothers were extremely wise to break up the alphabet between them! None of the other teams that chose that challenge figured that out and poor Derek had to learn to roll his R's to make it through that challenge. I'm half German and I can't roll my R's either-I never would have been able to get through that alphabet-that challenge looked hard! Plus, did you notice that the helpful words that were written under each alphabet letter were missing when they were tested but were there when they were being taught?
The cart challenge didn't look that hard but a team that didn't nail theirs together too well ended up having it falling apart in the street. I was surprised to see that the twins didn't use the twin (I think it was Emily who did the motorcycle challenge) to do the cart challenge since she was talented at putting things together. I think they are alternating challenges which isn't wise in my book-they should be choosing based on which twin is better at which challenge. I really hope it doesn't cost them in the end. I want them to win!
I have to say while I was really sorry the orange team came in last (at least they weren't eliminated) I love the way the husband continued to encourage his wife on the mat when she said she felt that it was her fault they lost so much time at the dancing challenge. What a great husband he is.

The couple that came in last are just so awesome, I love them. The fact that she felt bad because she might have been letting him down and how supportive and encouraging he was just made me so happy.
I still want the twins to win, but would be happy with those two as well

I want them to win! They had to decide before knowing the full challenge and, IIRC, part of the decision for Molly to do it was concern about Emily having to run around picking up/delivering with a cart given her injured leg. I was bummed for Will and Abby but would have been equally bummed for any team except Emily and Molly. For them I would have been devastated except I can hear them saying "it's okay if we have to quarantine together for days and will just get to know each other better". I did kind of roll my eyes at them talking about the last team departing 45 minutes after the others next week like it is a massive obstacle to overcome. They will be only 30 minutes behind teams 3 & 4 and 15 minutes behind teams 5 & 6.

I know a lot of people are sad about will n abbie... eh im ok with them out.. they were not may favorite and she annoyed me in the beginning...
im hoping molly n emily can get past her leg injury... i want them to win.. i also like derek and claire but thats because i am a reality tv fanatic... lol and big brother is included in that...
but i was sooo super impressed with the way lumumba treated glenda.. during the dancing and then during the cart building.. i really hope they can overcome the time delay... i really like them.. my daughter is 5-11 and she is always so paranoid about dating someone shorter than her.. shes 25 so she is starting to see past that.. but i worry she wont give a good guy a chance just cuz he is so much shorter... lumumba is the kinda guy i want for her!!!

Yes, I got the impression that the twin who hurt her leg opted not to do the cart challenge because I think they thought it would be a lot of running while pushing a cart. In the end she could have done it. But at least they're not last.
I loved how fast the two guys did on that alphabet challenge. And one of the twins having knowledge of Hebrew absolutely helped them since there are so many similarities.
Doesn't it seem like the teams are much nicer to each other this season? Not only between teammates but also to other teams. Has Covid mellowed everyone? or maybe their true colors haven't come out yet...although I remember teams in past seasons who were snarking at each other almost immediately. The only one I saw sort-of doing that was the daughter from the father-daughter team, when dad wasn't doing the metal detector challenge to the daughter's liking. But even then she wasn't being mean to dad, just under her breath while she was waiting.

i do agree all the teams are nicer to each other... last season it was just that 1 married couple where the husband was always on his wifes behind... and he is a motivational teacher or something.. akbar.. i dont remember the wifes name..
and also the 2 guys that got really frustrated when they challenges didnt go their way... i cant remember their names... they got pissy with each other and with the flight attendent girls n the holdernesses when they all passed those guys..

When the teams hit the detour, DH & I will always decide which task we would take if it were us, and the first thing I said to DH about the alphabet task was that we could split it, and each memorize half. So I was surprised when only one of the actual teams opted to do that, especially Derek & Claire since he was struggling so much with it. I agree that the teams are nicer to one another this season AND last season. I hope it continues on like that. I also hope Emily's injury heals soon for her. I'm worried about how long they can keep getting through these legs if she is in pain. And of course I felt bad for Abby & Will for having to leave. On the flip side, I was glad that Glenda & Lumumba were spared elimination this week. They worked together so wonderfully this week. It was lovely to see how Lumumba encouraged her & assured her that he was proud of her. The teams with dancers on them---oh my gosh---they must be counting their lucky stars over & over as there keep being dance related detours!

Glenda and Lumumba are a great couple, I love how supportive he was towards her in the challenges this week, so although I think they'll be the next team to be eliminated I was glad they get at least one more leg.
I don't have strong feelings about Will and Abby being eliminated due to covid. Her enthusiasm levels were a little too much for me in the first couple of episodes and then I felt like we didn't really get to see much of them after that.
It's definitely lovely to see all the teams getting along with no factions or negativity between them, the drama between teams was never my favourite part of the show.

We were sad that Glenda and Lumumba were eliminated but fully expected it. They showed such joy on the mat though and you couldn't help but smile with them.
When Derek and Claire opted for the games instead of the walnut cracking, we thought *uh-oh* but they did great!
When the twins were saying how similar they were growing up it was amazing! Both 2nd chair in the band, got trouble for kissing their boyfriends in 5th grade, etc.

I signed up for Paramount+ Do you have problems watching shows on P+? I hate it! Unlike Netflix or Prime, you can't set it to have closed captions on all the time and it's hard to set up once the show starts. We've been watching The Good Fight but I don't know how many other shows we'll watch on it because it is so hard to set up.

I was upset to see the orange team (Glenda and Lumumba) come in last to the mat, and was hoping that the dancers Aubrey and David (who were arguing in the car about directions) would get lost and come in last instead. Glenda and Lumumba were so kind and thoughtful to each other each time they were on camera in a way that is seldom seen on the race between couples. I mean, think about it...it's a very high stress situation! I've been married for 27 years to DH and I love him to pieces, but if we were in the car trying to find out way to the pit stop thinking we could easily be last, I know I could have easily lost my cool just like Aubrey did. G&L were so grateful and did show such joy on the mat for the experience (I agree with you Cadoodlebug) that I couldn't help but smile with them too.
I don't know why but for some reason I just haven't connected with any of the dancing teams or the pro cheerleading team. For now I'm rooting for either the military brothers or the twins but it's the twins that I really want to win and I was so happy to see them come in 2nd this episode right after the twins.
The first challenge was quite daunting looking at first with, what was it 22 generations of family crests on that wall, but Michelle (pro dancer) dressed in red and black had a great idea of going ahead and repelling down and looking at what the questions were first (the 5 crests with the names she had to match) and then going back up. That was a great place to go repelling, wasn't it?
I thought the part of France they were in was beautiful and it was nice to see somewhere other than Paris for a change.
The walnut oil vs. the medieval games was a bit boring I thought. Where are the bungee jumping challenges, the kind of challenges that make you pace back and forth wondering if you can do it? Is it all because of Covid that these types of challenges have been curtailed?

I signed up for Paramount+ when Hulu dropped a bunch of seasons of TAR for that exact reason. FWIW, Hulu didn't drop TAR, CBS/Paramount didn't renew their contract to stream it. Just like BBC/ITV created Britbox instead of renewing contracts with Netflix so we have to subscribe with their service to see our favorite British cop dramas now. I took a look at their route through the Dordogne, and the total drive time for this leg was less than 2 hours start to finish. I doubt anyone took more than a hour at the roadblock and 30 minutes at the Detour. Even with the wrong way stuff, no one had major driving problems and were within minutes of each other arriving at the mat. I doubt G&L were that far behind given that the arrived at the Roadblock as M&M were leaving. I thought Michelle was super smart to rappel down and figure out what she needed to know to finish the family tree challenge rather than wasting time memorizing everything. I died laughing with M&M were walking around in the walnut grove looking everywhere for a walnut grove.

I was sad to see Glenda & Lumumba go this week even though I expected it. Even without the later start, they've struggled to keep pace with the rest of the teams, but their attitudes have been a delight to watch. I don't know why but for some reason I just haven't connected with any of the dancing teams or the pro cheerleading team. This is me too. I don't dislike any of the teams left, but I don't feel like I know those teams as well. I still don't think I have a favourite team that I'd like to see win.
