I haven't travelled much since my divorce in 2015.
It's time to go see some things.
I'll be going by myself mostly.
And I think the best way to do it for me will be by cruise if/when possible.
I want to book a Fall New England/Canada cruise for next year.
There are quite a few options and I'm feeling a little overwhelmed.
Would you please share some tips for me for booking this thing? Your favorite cruise liner? Things I MUST do and things I should absolutely NOT do?
I reached out to a travel agent and she basically told me to tell her the dates I wanted to go and cruise liner I wanted to book. She offered no guidance.
I'm sure there are a lot of cruise threads, but I find the search feature here frustrating.
So I THANK YOU in advance for sharing your experiences and ADVICE!

I would contact another travel agent. They have always been so much help when planning cruises for us.

It kind of depends on what type of cruise you are looking for. Something quieter and relaxed? Something more energetic with a party vibe?
I can tell you good packing tips for a cruise, but as far as liners, it really depends on the experience you are seeking.

Start with the dates you’d like to travel and any sights you really want to see. That will narrow it down a bit. Cruise lines have their own consultants who can help you plan. Always fly in the day before in case of any issues. Cruises offer cruise/flight deals but you don’t have much control over how they get you there so keep that in mind. We sail mainly with NCL (Norwegian) because we’ve worked up the ranks and get extra perks.

Several liners offer the Fall New England/Canada cruises.
I think, by design, these aren't going to be the party kind of cruise, which is what I prefer. Quiet = better. I'm not imagining a ton of kids on a Fall cruise when school is in session.
And of course, these will be either in late September or October.
I may just go ahead and contact a different travel agent. Her response was discouraging.

Could I potentially get a better deal and save a little money by booking with a travel agent?

My cousins just did one out of New York City to Rhode Island, Maine and Halifax along with a couple other spots let me message him later when I get home from the dentist and I’ll let you know what he said

As a first time cruiser in May, I learned a lot.
Buy magnetic hooks for your room.. they are great.. They stick to your walls.
Don't use their shampoo/conditioner if you are picky.. I didn't even try it but heard lots of bad reviews.
I went on Royal Caribbean and LOVED them. The staff was outstanding.
Scope out the boat, get a sense of it.. you get turned around quickly (well I did..lol)
I packed okay.. too many bottoms and not enough tops. I went on a 7 day cruise. I changed tops way more often. Also didn't bring enough undies, but I washed in the sink and hung them in the closet to dry. I brought maxi skirts too... so I should have done less shorts to offset the skirts. I brought one sorta nicer outfit. Some people dressed to the hilt, I didn't. I didn't have the space to bring fancy dress clothes. One of my couple friends, brought a suit jacket and nicer pants but no tie and his wife brought a fancy but not fancy fancy dress.
I bought a passport holder that also held my Covid card.. that was nice. Didn't need either really after the cruise started so that just went into the safe.
I upgraded to a drink package.. soda/tea/juices type thing.. I am glad I did. The booze package was really expensive.. I just bought those along the way.. spent less than $100 total.
I'll probably think of something else... but that is what I can come up now.

Cruisecritic.com is the best to gather info.
Also, if you belong to Costco or BJs, check with their travel agents. We used Costco a few years ago (before Covid) and the amount of free stuff we got was unbelievable. Free cocktail party, cake decorating class, spa treatments, champagne & wine glasses, candy, doughnuts, gift store voucher, robes. I think it depends on how many bookings they have on a ship.

As for the cruiseline, it depends on the "vibe" you want. As another poster said, the New England cruises are not the party-ship vibe. I went from NYC one way to Quebec in 2017 on Princess. I think it was ten days. We were at the very end of their season and got a great price. Their sort of last minute deals are called Drop and Go.
If you go by yourself you will almost pay as much as two people minus the port charges. The price that they say when you first look online is not the final price. The initial price is an inside stateroom--which is fine. You can save a lot of money vs a balcony. Just depends what you want. Plus there are port charges/taxes/tips. You can go and never pay for extra meals--or you can. There's extra price dining options on all of them but the included food is usually fine. Drinks are pricey and that's where they make $$$.
There are also the more expensive "non-mainstream" cruises. But if it's your first, I would recommend you start with a mainstream one--Princess, Royal Caribbean, Celebrity, Holland America(but they tend to skew a little older demographic than the other three). Carnival is good for families. But we took a 3+ week transpacific on Carnival in 2019 from Long Beach to Singapore and it was mostly retired people.
We always book direct, sort of why I book flights only with the airline. You know who to contact if there are questions/issues.
I've been on a bunch, all sorts of different lines. Ask away with questions and have fun!

We cruise on carnival because we are cheap.. lol Norwegian is equal to carnival... but royal is a better line.. celebrity is a step above that...
Since its your 1st traveling alone in awhile expedition.. i would like into a different travel agent... so they can sync flights hotels and transportation to the ship... they should also help you book excursions that are different from what the ship offers...
If you want to do something different... the ship excursions will be nice and you wont be alone... but a lot of people compare it to herding cattle... our 1st cruise we did the ship things.... but now since we cruise the Caribbean a lot we do our own thing...

GREAT information, you guys. Super helpful...thank you!!
I've cruised a couple times. 22 years ago to the Bahamas and 13 years ago to Alaska. So I do have some familiarity. It's just been so long.

I like princess.. middle of the road, and has laundry machines available.. so I always take few clothes and run a load midweek.. easy peasy.
and they have afternoon tea. we like going through a travel agent.. esp now. as she does all the problem solving and makes sure everything is in order.
fly into the departing port the day ahead of time. don't pack all clothes in checked baggage.
read reviews of cruises and ships on cruisecritic.com. we stay away from the buffet and just relax at a dining room. as a first time cruiser, I would take excursions through the ship, as you have protection against being left behind. you can find small group experiences through the ship.. one excursion I took had 8 people.. just depends don't try to do too much on any day..

We cruise Carnival. We started with them because their schedule aligned with ours and continues too. We tend to book 90 days or less out, so it works for us.
Lately I have been cruising solo more than with the Mister because of his work and my need to cruise. We gamble so we get great offers.
I used to use a travel agent, but COViD happened and her business died. I just recently went thru one of Carnival’s PVPs. Before that I just booked thru their site, not much difference unless you like talking to a person. Carnival charges double fare minus one set of port fees and one set of gratuitys to cruise solo.
I’ve got the packing down pretty good these days. Facebook pages and Cruise critic will recommend you bring a bunch of extra stuff like hooks, and other storage stuff; I have found them not necessary unless you have 3 or more in your room. The shampoo and body wash sucks so bring your own.
Three to five day cruises are usually more party time, longer cruises not so much. Longer cruises are an older crowd usually, they are the ones who have the extra time to cruise.
There is no difference in price booking thru a travel agent or directly. To get deals, even if you haven’t cruises before, sign up for whatever cruise company you think you might use rewards program. Make sure you sign in even if you are just exploring, they will send you offers. They are still recovering from COVID and want your business.

We also cruise Carnival because it's cheapest. My DH gambles so we get great offers. On Carnival you can bring one 12 pack of soft drinks in cans. You can also bring one bottle of wine. Because we gamble, we usually end up getting free drinks in the casino so that helps. We love to use the spa on a cruise but don't sign up for it in advance. They always offer significantly reduced pricing on various spa items during the cruise, especially on days at ports. I agree with signing up for the rewards programs. They also offer good deals. Have fun!

Ive cruised 22 times. Im an Elite cruise specialist. I would recommend a different agent as they should qualify you to the proper line. Check the CLIA (Cruise Line Assoc). They will have a list of accredited agents in your area. Different agencies will offer different amenities to book with them - extra onboard credit, dining, wine, etc.
Just off your comments, I would look into Holland America - they will be a quieter ship, but have an older clientele. I cruised them for Canada/New England and it was wonderful - smaller ships and they did Boston - Montreal or Quebec City so you get more of the Canada portion.
Just a thought.

Book with a travel agent who will monitor the cruise for price drops or additional available on board credit. On a prior cruise, the travel agent we used was able to get a price reduction when the cruise line had a sale and obtained $600 in on board credit for us. That person is no longer working, but I do have another great agent. PM me if you're interested in a name.

I've cruised 11 times, ten using a TA and once directly with the cruise line. The last time we cruised was in 2019 and that's when we booked it ourselves.
Our TA always coordinated all air, ground transportation and hotel too. They also make sure get the best price AND make sure you have plenty of time to get from one part to the next. Our TA retired so in 2019 instead of looking for our own air and ground transportation, we just used the cruise lines. Since it was their package then they were responsible to get me to the next step. If I do it and there is an oopsie, then I have to get there on my own dime. KWIM? Since we always cruise with the same cruise line we got a really good deal on our cruise.
Oh and get the insurance! You never know what might happen and you have to cancel.
ETA: we did have an issue once where our flight was cancelled (we and our TA were never notified she just happened to check to see if the prices had changed) and the airline wanted to charge us like $500 each to rebook on a different flight. Our TA argued for us that it wasn't our fault it was cancelled and we had booked in plenty of time. She won and we didn't have to pay extra. We would never have known about the cancellation until we checked in if she wasn't checking on it for us.

I agree with using Costco if you are a member. You can save a bunch of money and get extra perks going that route. I’ve cruised on Norwegian and on Disney and much prefer Disney just because the level of customer service is unparalleled IMO and more stuff is automatically included vs. having to purchase amenities separately.

We have cruised 14 times, 15th one is coming up on Dec 24. We mostly now cruise Celebrity. We have cruised on NCL, Royal and Carnival.
We watch for deals for a travel agent that I found on FB. She post AMAZING deals. I got a 7 day Norwegian Fjords cruise with beverage pkg, wifi, gratuities and OBC for less than what we paid for a 4 day Carnival.
I have booked with travel agents, directly with the cruise line and with Costco.

I would contact another travel agent. They have always been so much help when planning cruises for us. We used a travel agent for our Alaska land and sea cruise package. She was extremely helpful. She asked so many questions about things we hadn't thought of. I think it's worth the extra money for a balcony. We sat out there a lot. It was nice to have the privacy to relax. Be prepared to spend extra money on dining. The food in the upcharged restaurants was much better than the basic dining.

No tips from me, k suffer from serious motion sickness and I’m too scared to cruise. But, I did want to say congrats on doing what you want to do! Just a note, I suffer from awful motion sickness, too. I was fine on both cruises, Caribbean and Alaskan. I took Dramanine at 8 am and 8 pm, so I'd have a steady dose in my system. It was even a bit rough leaving Miami and I was fine. I had to keep a little extra caffeine in my system to offset the drowsiness, but I don't mind that! I can't even go to an Omni theater without Dramamine, that is how bad I am. The only time I did have a problem was in the theater on one of the ships. It was in the front of the ship and I could see the balcony edge above us moving. Nope! I just avoided the theater after that. It was a little bit of a bummer to miss shows, but there were bars with music and other things to do. The second ship was fine for me and we enjoyed shows every night.

I can't thank you guys enough for your time and responses! These tips are all super helpful.
The Alaskan cruise I was on was SUPER rocky for a day and a half or so and it didn't bother me at all. So I'm lucky there.
I'm thinking about asking a girlfriend if she might want to join me.
And I'm going to find a different travel agent.
I'm not a Costco member...I suppose I could join though. We just got our first one where I live a couple years ago.
Thanks again so much! I may PM a couple of you once I've done more research and have more specific questions.
