Disappointment in food quality at restaurant

Ew. Liquid eggs and sausage patties - that sounds so gross! I'm sure that wasn't the celebration breakfast you had in mind. Sorry you had such a disappointing experience.

I'm grossed out at the idea of liquid eggs but not the least bit surprised that a sausage patty would be a frozen product at chain places.

And a quick google search says most places like Denny's and IHOP use powdered or liquid eggs by default for scrambled and omelets. 

I'll stick to eggs Benny when going for breakfast to ensure I'm getting my eggs straight out of the shell.

That is SO disappointing. We go out to eat very rarely and it's a huge treat when we do. So we expect the food to taste good. It's almost not worth it because of similar experiences.

That's annoying, and disappointing has been my experience too lately.

DH and I stopped for lunch at the local pub. We had a beer, glass of wine, french fries and a french onion soup. The drinks were normal but the French fries were both soggy AND burnt (lol, how?) and the soup tasted like a salt lick. It was $80!!!! I just can't anymore- those weren't even meals, just 2 drinks and appetizers.

We usually eat at vegan restaurants, and the food is usually excellent, but $$$. We just can't afford to eat out anymore. Dinner for 4 is usually $200, and it's just not do-able on the regular.

Going out to eat is usually a disappointment for us in the past few (Covid) years. We've actually had the best luck at chain restaurants like Applebee's. At least they are consistent. We went to a local place the other night and it was extremely disappointing. DH ordered a cheesesteak that was pretty sad...the meat didn't go to the ends of the hoagie. We've had better sandwiches at Arby's. I had butternut squash ravioli with brown butter sauce and candied walnuts. The ravioli were almost dry on the outside. I mean even a teaspoon more butter would have been ok. Two drinks and dinner $50 (not bad-but not good food).

A couple weeks ago we went to Applebees and spent $40 on lunch. I got 3 meals out of chicken alfredo fettucine and DH got 2 meals out of his riblets platter. Consistent quality, decent tasting and huge portions.

DH has told me for years that I make better food at home. It's so hard to want to cook all the time though.

DH has high expectations of food in restaurants. He expects them to wow him. I keep telling him to lower his expectations a little and focus on the service. That's what we're paying for, the ability to go out, get food and not have to make it or clean up afterwards. I want drinks to be brought out quickly. I want my order taken in a timely manner. I want my food hot and cooked to order. I want the waiter to be friendly, responsive, and not forget about us. I don't expect amazing food, especially breakfast.

I've definitely run the course with restaurants with weird hours. I swear our favorite Italian place is a money laundering operation. It's got stated hours online and on the doors, but it's a crap shoot. When it IS open, it's packed. The food is incredible, the prices are reasonable, and the wait staff is the best. But you can't plan to go there, because invariably it will be closed. We were talking with our server the other night and they said the owners (family owned and operated for several generations) is committed to only the best food and service, and if they don't feel they can meet expectations, the doors don't open. I don't know whether to be thankful or annoyed!

The rest though, are just a bunch of excuses at this time. I saw a succinct way of putting it the other day:
A person quits.
MGMT: We are all a team, let's pull together and make a massive effort and make it up til we replace the person!
MGMT (to themselves): Hehehehe I only have to pay 5 to do the job of 6! This is nice!
Public and employees: When are you hiring someone? Someone else just quit, now service sucks and 4 are doing the job of 6!
MGMT: Golly.. no one wants to work anymore!! See, the sign? We ARE hiring.
Applicant: Hey, I'd like a job. I'd also like to pay my rent and have lights? Food may be nice?
MGMT: Dang people so entitled. Sorry, you aren't the candidate we are looking for.
Public and employees: How's the hiring going?
MGMNT: Points to sign... no one wants to work. By the way, you should be happy you have jobs and that we are open to serve food etc.
Rinse. Repeat.

I would never expect liquid eggs in a sit down restaurant. And I would never go back if they served me that! How crazy that they think they could get away with it.

I'm sorry your experience was disappointing. When we are in Europe, huge breakfast buffets are part of the deal. Now that everyone is talking about liquid eggs, I'm guessing that is powered eggs that water or milk is added to. The scrambled eggs we had at every hotel were superb but I'm thinking they would almost have to be liquid eggs to feed the masses.

Honestly, it is the norm for chains. The waitress gave her a good, honest answer when asked about the eggs. They aren't trying to get away with anything. Corporate control, reducing costs and essentially production/reheating components are part of the way things are done in many restaurants. 

I also except the DS's chicken strips were frozen and maybe even the waffles. 

Yeah, we don’t eat out too much any more, and when we do, it’s usually a family-owned ethnic place. We went to a local middle eastern place (local chain) last night and the food was excellent and the portions enormous. Same with the ramen we had last week.

Large scale chains don’t pay well enough to attract the best workers and they don’t always produce the best food, unfortunately. Keeping costs down in mass production means that corners get cut.

If I’m going to get frozen or microwaved food, I’d rather just get it from the prepared food aisle in the grocery store and heat it up myself.
