What do you guys usually have for a side with ham?
I'm thinking mashed potatoes, but then, there's not gravy. Not gonna do a redeye one.

Warm crushed pineapple, potatoes au gratin, southern style green beans, French potato salad or German potato salad (both warm), cheesy garlic rolls are my favorite ham sides.

If you flavor your mashed potatoes you don't need gravy.

Oh I love sautéed green beans with a little bit of olive oil and garlic and sea salt. You could do twice baked potatoes or even just baked potatoes. But I agree with pantsonfire if you season your mashed potatoes you don’t need gravy.

in the past we've had smashed potato salad, scalloped or au gratin potatoes, slow cooker creamed corn, sweet potatoes in one form or another...
We'll have ham for New Year's Day this year and so far my sides are roasted sweet potatoes and an apple-walnut broccoli salad - I'll add another (cooked) vegetable but not sure what yet

The seasoned mashed sounds like a good idea. What do you guys usually do? Sr cream? garlic?

I never made ham gravy until I met my husband 21 years ago. His family always has it with ham. I use the drippings from the ham (or buy a ham soup base to make a stock if there aren't enough drippings) and then add the slurry of cornstarch and water. I just add pepper to it as it's salty enough from the ham. It's surprisingly good.

Potato gratin is the only option with ham! Sautéed green beans, glazed carrots, and corn go well as far as veggies go.

The seasoned mashed sounds like a good idea. What do you guys usually do? Sr cream? garlic? I do vegan butter, kosher salt, pepper, parsley, chives.

We love a potato casserole that you can make ahead (and even freeze)
Not at home to add the actual recipe but it’s mashed potatoes to which you add (lots of) butter, cream cheese, sour cream and green onions. Serve right away or reheat when wish to serve. No need for gravy with this creamy goodness on your plate.

My dd 2 is having Christmas Day dinner at her house. She is getting a honey baked ham. When her sister asked her what she needed to bring, dd 2 said - dressing ! She was promptly informed that you usually have dressing with turkey, not ham. Granted, you *could* have dressing with ham, but some kind of potatoes works for us. This should be interesting. 😊

twice baked potatoes. Bake them, slice lengthwise, mix with butter sour cream, salt, pepper, even cheese..then put back into the shell. Reheat when needed. They even freeze well.

In our house at Christmas, it's twice-baked potatoes with our ham, as well as veggies and some kind of fruit salad.

I go with oven roasted carrots
simply toss lightly in olive oil ( actually any oil would work) salt and pepper and what ever seasoning or herb you have on hand
bake at 400 for 10 ish minutes i buy the pre sliced crinkle cuts so they are all the same thickness and the crinkles nicely hold the seasoning
Can be different every time
