So I’ve never used Uber for transportation and will need to next month at the Ft. Lauderdale airport.
Can someone ‘school me’ on how it works? I have the app on my phone and know how to schedule it but how will I know which Uber vehicle at the airport would be mine? I’m assuming you pay everything through your phone and not cash. Thanks.

The app will let you know the driver and vehicle, including license plate number.
All on the phone unless you want to tip in cash instead of in app.

You do pay for everything on the app but you can tip cash if you want. When you schedule the ride and it is accepted by a driver, the app will tell you the make and color of the Uber vehicle and the license plate number. and how many minutes till he arrives.

It also gives you a picture of the make and model so you can see what it looks like.

So I’ve never used Uber for transportation and will need to next month at the Ft. Lauderdale airport. Literally, I am in the same boat. Ft Lauderdale, next month, lol. Although it looks like we are probably ending up getting a rental car, but we thought at first I'd have to Uber, and I never have on my own before.

We use Uber all the time in Florida. Best thing ever!

All on the phone unless you want to tip in cash instead of in app. I'm Ubering around town where DD lives this week as I run errands, etc. JUST yesterday realized that I want to tip the drivers with cash so they don't have to claim it as income. Apparently UBER changed their policies last year and drivers are earning far less than they did earlier. I do the same with wait staff in restaurants.

At my local airport there is an area in the parking structure for the ride share cars to pick up. First I go there, schedule the ride, and then the rest of the above responses apply.
The first time I booked a ride to the airport I asked the driver how it works coming back from the airport. That is how I found out the procedure. I don’t schedule the ride before I get to that area because sometimes the driver accepting is already there picking some one else up.

most big airports have a designated area for Uber pickup. You should be able to investigate that prior to the trip. Uber will tell you the color of the car, the name of the driver and the license plate. You can add pickup instructions and say "I'm wearing a red striped shirt and blue jeans with a yellow suitcase." It's not as complicated as it sounds- lol.

I have never used Uber or Lyft, but I have read advice that, when you approach the car, you dont tell them your name or get in. First you ask them who they are picking up.

All good advice! My only advice to add is don’t order a car until you are at the point of pick up. Some drivers come within minutes.
I also tip in cash. They seem really surprised when you hand them cash.

Check the license plate…at least here in Seattle area a lot of Ubers are the same make/model/color (hello black Toyota Prius).

Back in the stone ages when I was a waitress the restaurant had to report an estimation of tips (I think based on sales for your shift) to the IRS. Paying in cash isn't going to help the staff avoid the IRS.

Not everyone tips them, or if they do, I am sure the percentage varies widely. In the restaurant business, it is assumed that in the U.S. the waitstaff will generally get 10-20%. Does anyone know?

Uber pick up easy at FLL...
Go to baggage claim area (even if you don't have bags) you'll see signs for ride share. I usually fly in on JetBlue, and from the JetBlue baggage carousel area, you go outside and go right. There is a whole mess of people milling around.
The app will tell you your drivers name, car make/model/color and license plate. As I approach I look for the right car, lol, verify plate (Florida usually only has one in the back) ask the driver their name. They 9/10 ask me if I am "my name" and every time have been right lol. It's actually really great.
When you are returning to the airport, if using Uber, make sure you choose the right terminal. It's not tragic, but it may save you a few bucks if you don't have to circle the airport again lol As far as tipping, I don't believe in skirting the IRS and I definitely don't believe in finding yet another way for the end user to pay for what the company making the profit is exploiting their workers out of. Besides, I don't carry cash, and I want the points on my credit card. I tip in the app.

I tip based on a number of things. Were they professional? Car clean/no stinks? Did they drive safely? Did they help me with bags? Did they act as tour guide if I'm chatty? Was traffic brutal where they spent alot of extra time on my ride? I tend to stick with 20% unless something is really out of whack or extra great.

I’m not using it to return to the terminal I’m just taking it that day because my niece has to work

I love JetBlue from our home (Boston is a hub) and direct to FLL where our get away condo is. The condo is 12 minutes Uber ride from the airport.
It’s very easy and very well set up. They do show up quick, so I recommend not doing the request til you get to the baggage claim area.
Have a nice flight and get away!!!

Yep. Just do it when you land. At a place like that it won't take but a few minutes to get a ride.
I use Uber all of the time and have never scheduled a pick up.

If they dont pay taxes on all of their income just as all of the rest if us do, they are not contributing to Social Security or Medicare, nor will they be able to collect Social Security. Everyone should be paying a fair share of taxes, including and especially the wealthy

There are also taxis and ground transportation vehicles that can get you where you want to go. These drivers have full insurance, have a city licence and are much safer than Uber. The vehicles get regular inspection and have a trained driver. They also know the city and don't simply rely on Google maps. You can usually book ahead and they will be there waiting for you. I realise that this is considered "old school" but it works for me.

No, don’t schedule one in advance. There’s no reason to - there will be plenty of cars with little to no wait at an airport - and if you had a flight delay, etc, you potentially could get charged for the ride if you missed the cancellation window. Reservations are best for rides in off-peak times in areas with lower volume, so you can have a ride when you need without a long wait. For example, I need to leave for the airport at 4 am tomorrow and reserved an Uber for that because there aren’t a lot of free cars in my area at that time of day.

Check out Lyft. A family member did lots of research before taking her first ride in this type of transportation. Lyft seems better. She was very pleased with her two rides to and from the airport.

I literally flew home from FLL yesterday... LOL along with a bazillion Buffalo fans. Congrats on the win! Allen is rock solid in that he doesn't let interceptions knock him off kilter. Now yall play my Steelers.... sooooooooo hopefully Allen is massively hung over. Back to your Uber question lol YES, request when you hit baggage claim. Unless you are arriving at a very peculiar time, uber is super fast and usually they are queued up waiting for requests to hit. They can and do (everywhere), rate you poorly if you make them wait too long. Even if it says your plane lands at 6:04 pm (personal example) lol it's very rare your feet are on the ground immediately (I didn't actually get off the plane until 6:25 pm. And it's about a 7 minute walk to baggage claim. I promise you won't wait but a couple minutes. If you build in extra time, and request it for that time, you'll likely wait longer.

So I ended up not using Uber a year ago but will need to use it tomorrow. So what you’re all saying is to not schedule an Uber pick up to just do it on my app when I land? I don't order the car until I'm standing where I want to be picked up. The app pinpoints your location and it only takes a couple of minutes for the car to arrive. You can check in advance how long it will take to get a car. I've never pre-booked. It costs a lot extra and has never been necessary. Check out Lyft. A family member did lots of research before taking her first ride in this type of transportation. Lyft seems better. She was very pleased with her two rides to and from the airport. We use both services quite a lot. We had noticed a downturn in the quality of Lyft so we asked a couple of drivers who said they don't drive for Lyft anymore because it seems to be the rideshare of choice for sketchy people. They both said they had unwittingly taken passengers to drug deals on Lyft before. I'm sure most Uber and taxi drivers have had similar things happen.
