I have notice on some Instagram posts and just heard in a Hallmark movie someone referring to their SUV as a truck. I have never heard them referred to as a truck in my area or by anyone I know. Car would be the generic term I hear.
I did google it and they are/were (until 2008 to 2013) built on a light truck chassis and technically considered one. They are now considered a crossover. I have never referred to an SUV as a truck even in their early days…did/do you?

My DSO and my brother both call their SUVs a truck…which IMHO they absolutely are not.
To me a truck has a truck bed, which you could choose to cover with a cap but it is not a part of the interior space of the vehicle…that would be a car or SUV.
We were just out for a drive and I was giving DSO a hard time about this so I was excited to tell him the Peas would also be discussing this issue lol

Consider it a truck? No. Call it a truck? Sometimes. We used to refer to dh’s Grand Cherokee as a truck more out of habit because his previous cars had been trucks….imagine the blow when the state classified it as a “station wagon” on the title 🤣

No, but a lot of people around here do. I'm not sure why but it bugs me.

In the early days of SUVs, I had an Explorer that I bought in 1996 and called that a truck because it was built on a truck chassis. The SUVs that I’ve owned since then were built on their own chassis - Ford Escape, and a Buick Enclave and Chevy Traverse (I have now) which have the same SUV chassis.

we have a Suburban that we call "the truck" just to distinguish it from "the Subaru" and "the Acura" (why we don't just say "the Suburban" is beyond me.)
But we don't really think it's a truck and I would never tell anyone that we had a truck.

No I don’t call an SUV a truck. I know that Americans call some big cars “trucks”. In Australia, the only vehicles that are called trucks are semi trailers and B Doubles etc.
So if you call a vehicle like a pick-up a “truck”, what do you call a semi trailer or B Double etc?

So if you call a vehicle like a pick-up a “truck”, what do you call a semi trailer or B Double etc? We call those trucks, or big rig trucks or Semis. Also called 18-wheelers. We have lots of names for them. But they are all trucks. ETA - we call them pickup trucks because they are built to carry and tow heavier loads than a passenger car.

I have a SUV and frequently refer to it as “car” in lieu of “vehicle”, but never “truck”. I don’t consider a SUV to be a car or a truck, even when I refer to it as a “car”.

I have driven a full size SUV since 1986 (well various ones) and have never once called it a truck. My first two were on truck chassis and I still didn't call it a truck. If it doesn't have a bed at the back, it's a car IMO.

No ... can you imagine calling a Rav-4 a truck? Here in Alberta, we are over run with real pick up trucks ... F150's, Silverado's, Tacoma's, Ram's ... I used to drive a number of F150's and loved them.

Bigger SUVs arw on a truck chassis, smaller ones are crossovers. I call my own SUV a car. No one has a car so it's not confusing. If I was talking about someone else I would say Mary got a Highlander. AussieMeg no one says pick up truck here, everyone has one. DH has a truck and our company owns bigger trucks, it's not confusing to to talk about or others' trucks.

No, and it drives me nuts. If it doesn’t have a truck bed, it’s not a truck. (But, weirdly, an El Camino is still not a truck even though it has a bed.)

No and I judge people who do. Trucks have an open bed, everything else is a car.

I'm in the South. We know what a truck is. However, trucks are becoming more passenger vehicles than hauling vehicles. Big cab, little bed. An SUV is still different.

No, but the state of Texas considers vehicles built on a truck chassis a Truck, so my registration indicates my Escape is a truck.

I was listening to a Dateline podcast the other day (the one about the lady abducted at the mall.) While she was being interviewed, she said she put her baby in the truck, and went to put the stroller in the back, then when she got in "the truck" she noticed the guy in the backseat by her 2 year old. Anyway... I thought she was referring to a truck. Turns out that the guy had a tendency to target large dark SUV's. I had to go back to listen to make sure I wasn't going crazy. LOL Also, a friend of mine just bought a Jeep Compass, and is convinced she has to learn how to do the Jeep wave HAHAHAHAHHAHA Can't wait to be "ducked." No one has the heart to tell her that she overpaid for a crappy SUV and doesn't get to join the Jeep cult that cheaply. Same with the Equinox drivers that refer to their car as a truck

No. A truck is a pick-up. Other “trucks” would always have a qualifier: dump truck, fire truck, tow truck. A semi is either a semi, big rig, or 18-wheeler.
An SUV is a mid-size or larger SUV. I have a hard time calling a CRV or Rav-4 an SUV so I might use the term crossover or would say a small SUV.
I also tend to use the term car to cover most personal vehicles, other than pick-ups (I would normally say truck). I might say Let’s take your car, even if it was an SUV.

No, but the state of Texas considers vehicles built on a truck chassis a Truck, so my registration indicates my Escape is a truck. My insurance also calls my SUV a truck. My first license plate said it was a truck, too. I think it makes some truck drivers get all emotional, so I consider it an SUV.

I have driven large SUVs for many years and I still don’t know what to call them. Not a truck, but also definitely not a car. Can’t call it a Range Rover, that sounds pretentious. FWIW, my mechanic calls it a truck.

My husband is a truck guy and says it is built to be a truck. He says frame and suspension are truck. Of course is word is law around here. 😛
ETA, here in California when you register an SUV it’s classified as a truck.
