As a spin off to the thread asking about bedding, can we talk about top sheets?
We've always used a top sheet but sometimes I see beds pictured using just a bottom sheet with a comforter/duvet/doona and the simplicity of that really appeals to me.
Currently, we just use the one duvet cover (with a removable wool inner) and change it with the seasons (washing, drying and returning it to the bed as needed). And in winter we add in a wool blanket between the duvet and the top sheet.
It occurs to me that if we were to ditch the top sheet we'd need multiple duvet covers all of the time, and to launder the cover as frequently as a top sheet, neither of which particularly puts me off, but I don't know anyone who does this so I'm not really sure if there are any pros or cons that I'm missing.
So, do you use a top sheet? And, if you don't mind sharing, why/why not?
ETA: added in for clarity that we use a removable inner inside the duvet cover - we wash this less frequently than we do the cover.

Yes, we do. It’s much easier to wash a top sheet versus a duvet cover. And it's infinitely easier to put a top sheet back on the bed vs wrestling the duvet into the cover. I wash the cover seasonally, but no way I'm doing it weekly.

I use a top sheet.. as someone said.. easier to deal with, and then I add a quilt on top if we need the warmth.

Yes, we do. It’s much easier to wash a top sheet versus a duvet cover. This. I wash the duvet cover regularly but not as often as I wash the sheets. I don't want to wrangle that thing every few days and a top sheet makes it so I don't have to.

Back when we had a comforter I always used a top sheet also. Now we just use a blanket and yes I still have the top sheet. First of all, when you buy sheets the set comes with bottom and top sheets so it never occurred to me not to use the top one. What do you do with it if you don't use it -- just get rid of it? And second, in the winter we use flannel sheets and I love the feeling of the flannel near my face.

Nope ... haven't used a top sheet in 25 years ... I have a number of cotton duvet covers and I hate dealing with top sheets ... I love the freedom of no top sheet.

Yes, we use a top sheet. The comforter is for added warmth. I also noticed that our top sheet adds warmth. Sometime I end up with just the comforter on top of me (I move around a lot), and I wake up cold. But then I find where I kicked the top sheet, pull it on me, and I feel warmer.

No we never use a top sheet and haven't in probably 25 years. We have down duvets on all the beds. Down regulates temperature much easier if there is no top sheet. We wash the duvet covers every week with the bottom sheet and pillowcases

On my bed and the guest bed, I do put the top sheet on. I gave up putting one on DD’s bed because the kid almost never sleeps under the comforter/duvet. She sleeps on top of it with a minky blanket on top of her 95% of the time, even when it’s cold. Besides, I take off the duvet cover and all her other bedding every week anyway because she’s allergic to dust mites, so not using the top sheet is just one less thing to wash.

Agree with the majority, use the top sheet as I'm not washing the ducet cover weekly. You can buy individual items, top or fitted sheet, pillowcases. Doesn't have to just be a set.

Yes, we do. It’s much easier to wash a top sheet versus a duvet cover. Especially if that duvet is a king size.

Normally I do use a top sheet. For some reason I have been cold this year and have a fleece throw on me to snuggle.

We use a top sheet because the vast majority of the time it’s too hot to sleep with anything more than a sheet.

Yes. I like how a top sheet feels so will always use one no matter what lies on top of it.

Even though I HATE putting on a new doona cover, hate with the heat of a thousand suns, I do not use a top sheet. Yes that means I have to wash the doona cover more often, but I don't like having too many layers. I don't like the extra heat of a sheet, I don't like how the sheet gets tangled up in the night, and I don't like having an extra layer to straighten out when making the bed. I'm so lazy!
And besides, I just get DSO to put the new doona cover on.

It literally just takes a few minutes to do. I have two lightweight duvet covers for DD’s bed so I can change out everything right after pulling the bedding off and then just wash the cover with the bottom sheet, blanket(s) and pillow cases. youtu.be/DRPfudNNd8Y

Yes, we use a top sheet. I like having layers. We do bottom sheet, top sheet, woven cotton blanket, down comforter in a duvet cover. Then on the top at the bottom I keep a throw blanket for naps (which we rarely take, but it looks nice at the end of the bed).

Yeah I buy sheets without top sheets for this reason. I feel like I am going to suffocate and hate using one. I have 3 duvet covers and May get a couple more. I am not giving myself nightmares over using a top sheet. Father *has* to have one, though.

I have never used a top sheet, it’s just one more thing to wrestle with during the night. The only time I ever sleep with one is in a hotel. And in the UK, you buy sheets individually - I haven’t seen sheet sets in decades.

My kid has allergies and all of her bedding has to be washed weekly. I would rather wash just the duvet cover weekly than the whole big bulky comforter inside that takes forever to dry. This burrito method is SO MUCH easier than trying to wrangle the duvet inside the cover any other way and get it all straightened out for when you do have to do it. Seriously, try it.

I loathe duvets. I use a quilt, switching it up for every season (like right now I have a velvet quilt from West Elm). I always use a top sheet.

I don't feel like a grown-up without a top sheet. Bare comforter is something I did when I was a teenager or early 20s, when I never made the bed either.
Plus now I have a BedJet and it needs its own top sheet. It's the best invention ever.

No top sheet. I just wash my duvet cover and I don’t find it hard to put the comforter back in.
