Well, consider me stunned. I was all set to reply “no, of course not; Valentines Day is nothing to do with children” and then I read the replies where most people say Yes. Stunned, definitely stunned. Interesting! It's always included children since I was young (I'm 65 now). My parents always gave us one of those little heart boxes filled will candy and sometimes a card. There were also Valentine boxes at school and simple cards were exchanged with your classmates. In our house it's always been a big deal, as DH's birthday is Valentine's Day as well. So lots of gifts, flowers, cards and candy around here! DD is 35 now but I still get a card for her and a small box of good chocolates. Some years she gets a bouquet, but this year she is out of town for a conference so flowers.

It’s seems to be that way in the US more than other countries 😊

This is the first year I didn't.
Valentine's Day was always special in my house growing up. My grandma's bday was Valentine's and that made it extra special just by association, I think. My mom would always get me something, and would often make me a card. My dad would always sign it, lol, or get me one, too, or write me a sweet note.
I wasn't sure about this year, with 2 teens. I concluded I didn't want to do anything, as they both have SOs now and stuff from mom isn't the same.
I do, however, have the world's least romantic and gooshy teenaged daughter. She adores her BF, yet cringes at the idea of doing anything too sweet for him or getting anything from him. She is weird about getting gifts in general, so that part isn't really strange for her. I think it's being afraid to show her vulnerable side in relation to a guy, because she's very feminist and women do it all, etc. She hasn't quite figured out that you can be that way and still be sweet if you want to be. (And she is a sweet person, it's not like that's just not in her nature, and she really does like and love this guy.) Ah, young love!

I sent my college kids cookies - honestly I take every excuse to send them a little something. I'm not actually sure I gave them anything when they lived at home, but now I'm sending groundhog day treats - I'm surely not going to skip Valentines Day - yea I miss them!

I doubt a single person either of us know celebrates it based on the 14th century version. No nor do I 😊 but you seemed puzzled that in some places they stick to the basic meaning. And as I said commercialism takes hold of any thing these days and expands The meaning is we spend more cash. Which basic meaning though - Chaucer's? It's always been a sham, it's just which version you want to celebrate. And honestly the "romantic" version creates way more commercialism and expense then sending my kids some cookies.

I'm in the US and teach adult students from around the world. All the students today said that in their native country it is a holiday to celebrate romantic love and is not celebrated in schools or for children. I just see it as an interesting cultural difference...I would be constantly wrong if I attempted to explain the "true" meaning of any cultural tradition.

I wanted to add that the parents of elementary school children are eager to learn about typical school events in the US. Several talked about sending "goodie bags" or valentines to school today for each child in their child's class, and a couple were going to their child's school to help out with a party.

Not gifts, but we give them cards and some candy. My kids are 9 and 20.

I always get my kids stuff. My Mom always got little things. I think of Valentines in more of a general love, not just romantic.

The amount of goodies sent in today for all the students was amazing. I had to provide extra bags on top of the boxes we made for their valentines. The amount of stuff that parents sent in to me as their children’s 3rd grade teacher was mind-boggling! I had to dig around for a vase left behind by the last teacher to put the fresh flowers in. Then there was the chocolate and stuffed animals. Wow! My students’ parents went above-and-beyond and most were born in Korea, India, China, Africa, and Afghanistan.

They would go home with a big box full of chocolates, cards, cookies and other treats plus mugs, tumblers, gift cards and other gifts. The middle school teachers now, not so much.

No, generally Valentine here = romantic love between 2 adults. Ditto in Australia. There’s no giving cards/gifts to entire classes either

I got my ds a valentine’s gift when he was little. Now he’s an adult so I send a handmade card to him and one to his gf. I sent each of them $10 to buy the other one a coffee. They’re both in school so they liked that.

My DD (13) LOVES those hard as rock conversation hearts so when I was picking up a prescription at Walgreens, I grabbed a bag for her. When I gave it to her yesterday, you would have thought she won the lottery she was so excited. 🤣❤️

No. I only get my youngest grandson (8) some candy. I’m not so big into this type of “Day”. We don’t do Mother’s or Father’s Day either.
