Three person family. We have never shared a bathroom with DS, except when staying in hotels. He’s 15, so not at home much longer, but if we get a vacation home, we’d intend to have it and use it for the long term. So, potentially, some day that could mean him and a partner and perhaps kids staying there too. Found a pretty great place with outstanding views, turnkey house. We like everything about it except it’s only one bathroom. Adding another would require an addition to the home, and I can pretty much guarantee we’d never do that. We don’t want projects in our primary home - no way do we want them in a vacation home. I’ve convinced myself that I’d be fine with one bathroom, but I’m also realistic enough to acknowledge that I could be wearing some rose-colored glasses since I like everything else so much. Crazy to consider one bathroom? Or not a dealbreaker? UPDATE: Well, we loved it but were not alone in that. It got multiple offers over the weekend and ours wasn’t accepted. Super bummed I won’t be staring at that view for years to come.

I would want one with 2 bathrooms, or at least a bath and a half. I think the only way I'd buy a vacation home with one bathroom would be if I was certain we would be adding on or renovating to get that second bath.

We have 3 with one bathroom now, with lots of talk of installing another in the basement. Looking to the future, there could be more there on a regular basis and then it would get much more crowded. For now it would work, but thinking long term, probably not.

You should probably find out if, when he has a family, they would stay with you or get a hotel

Dealbreaker for us, and we only have one child as well. Heck, we started booking 2 hotel rooms once she got to middle school!

Deal breaker for me unless it is an absolute steal and I would be saving enough to add on another bath.

My inlaws were looking at a very small condo in FL- to get to the only bathroom, people would have to walk through the master bedroom. MIL thought it was going to be a big issue because people would want to stay there. Spoiler alert, no one wants to stay with them, especially in such a small place! 😂 They didnt end up buying it.

I lived the first 54 years of my life in homes with one bathroom. I’m one of seven siblings. There were nine people in our one bathroom home growing up. I shared an apartment in college with three roommates and we had one bathroom. I could certainly deal with a single bathroom vacation home. But then there are lots of things I can live with that lots of people couldn’t. Some people would not believe what my current living situation is but we’re making it work.

That would not work for me. One bathroom is hard enough with just two married people I think. I would want at least 1.5 bathroom. Especially if you would expect child and future spouse to stay there

Is this vacation home in a warmer climate? Or are you planning to use it only during warm months? My ddil's mom's cabin has just one bathroom. But they have an outdoor shower and there is a public washroom not far from them down the beach.

I think project at primary home is different then vacation home. Would you have to be there when it was done? If you like that much I would figure out add on. How many bedrooms?

No. My current rancher only had one bathroom when we bought it. Never again.

It would be a deal breaker for us. Something to consider is how long you would expect to be there. Sharing one bathroom overnight is a lot different than for an entire week. I’d might consider renting it for those gorgeous views, but not purchase.

Are you sure you can’t deal with an addition? I would certainly go through that hassle if it meant getting the views I wanted.

If the house was otherwise great, had outstanding views, and was a reasonable price, I would live with one bathroom.
Our old beach house only had one bathroom, and we survived for many years, often having two families (four adults and five kids) staying there. It wasn't ideal, but we coped. The new house has two bathrooms, and is obviously much better.

Deal breaker for me, but, for excellent views/location, I wouldn’t hesitate for a minute to do an addition later on when it’s needed.

No way. My parents had a vacation home with only one bathroom and you always felt rushed to hurry and get done so the next person could use it. If you want your DS, future spouse and possible child to stay with you then you need two.

I'll support the choice to purchase. The view is gorgeous. We lived 4-7 people (on weekends) for 4 years with one bathroom. And no one ever complained.
We have two bathrooms in our current home but only one on the main floor and Jeremy and I have no problem sharing.
Honestly, I'm a little shocked here at all the responses. How much time do people honestly spend in the bathroom? I'd rather have the view.

Absolutely not - please don't do this and force his future family into the awkwardness of either putting up with it or telling you they need to get a hotel. I HATE sharing a bathroom and his future partner could very well feel the same.

I'll say no. We are three people (me, dh and young adult dd). We can do a shared hotel room for one night on the road, but that's it. We did a one bedroom/one bath condo vacation rental two years in a row and then said, nope, we need a two bed/bath.
And until five years ago we LIVED in a one bath house. But we've had enough of that!
I think you'd be fine for now, but when your son is grown and has a spouse/SO and possibly children, they might not want to stay with just one bathroom.

I would only buy it if I planned to add a bathroom.
The views are gorgeous! That said, I wouldn’t buy a place that I planned to use with anyone more than Dh with only one bathroom. The house we inherited in WV only has 1 bathroom and we use it MUCH LESS than we would if it had even another half-bath.

My vacation home has 1 bathroom, there were 5 of us, now myself and 3 teenage boys.
We are there every weekend in the summer, along with staying full time for 3-4 weeks in the summer. We make it work. For us, it is absolutely worth it for the view, the family fun, and relaxation we get.
I say go for it!

If it has amazing views, I would go for it. You will get used to it, and if it's a huge problem, you can add on (even if you don't want to right now). At least it's an option. One thing we have found is that on vacation, people shower and get ready at different times of day. It's not like everyone is trying to get to work/school at the same time. Whenever someone is going to shower, they shout, "Anyone need the bathroom? I'm going to shower." It works well for us.

Still nope - you either love it enough to put up with headache of addition or have ZERO expectation that your son will use it. Want to buy it for you and your husband great.
