UPDATE: arrived home from Mexico and the trip was beyond fabulous! When we got off the plane in Cancun I was a bit freaked out by the amount of people (like a sea of people) in the area to pass through customs BUT if you go to the far left of the terminal you can go through E-customs and as long as you have completed all of your documents online it is a breeze to get through. If you are traveling with kids under 18 though you are out of luck - you can't go through the electronic customs. When we got home and went through customs in Denver it was the same. Got in about 4 in the afternoon and had absolutely no wait time getting through. I mean no line at all! As planned - we never left the resort so felt 100% safe the whole time. I came home to a 10 inches of snow overnight - BOO! take me back to the beach please! I highly recommend The Occidental at XCaret in Playa Del Carmen. It is about an hour from Cancun.
So our "girls trip" to Mexico is coming up quickly. There are 8 of us going (all related) to celebrate my DD 30th birthday.
We are staying at the Occidental Xcaret (which is in the yellow zone). We land in Cancun (also in the yellow zone) and have the resort shuttle scheduled for transport from the airport to the resort (and back again at the end of the trip). We have no plans to leave the resort (which I understand is quite large) and plan to do everything onsite in groups of at least 3-4 of us.
With all of the warnings from the government right now some of our family (that are not going on the trip) are sending us all kinds of links to articles about kidnappings and the different "government warnings" - GEEZ - it is so much to digest - UGH
I've always been an optimist so I really have no second thoughts about taking this trip. My sister (who travels to Mexico several times a year) says that there is always some sort of travel warning related to Mexico.
Anyway - anyone have any input on traveling to Mexico right now? Anyone been in the Cancun area recently? Any suggestions on traveling to these areas (we know not to wear our jewelry/diamonds and we will stay in our group etc.)?

No, I would not. There are so many safer places in the Caribbean that I as a Canadian would pick long before Mexico. It has been unsafe for years.

I see no problem with Xcaret/Cancun and several other tourist areas. Border cities, I would definitely avoid.

I would and do. We go to the Yucatan side or CDMX every couple of months with no problems.

We have in the past but DH says no right now. Crime has risen a great deal. Try Belize, Costa Rica, or a Caribbean island instead.

I am going to visit my son who lives in Mexico sometime this spring or summer. I did pause a bit when I heard about the kidnapping that recently happened there, but shit happens everywhere. On Friday night, the grocery store I am at at least 3 times a week, less than 2 miles from my house, had a robbery/shooting in the parking lot. It freaked me the heck out--a woman and her husband had just shopped, she was sitting in the car, he was putting groceries in the car, and a man jumped in the car and after a scuffle with her, shot her in the face.
It sucks, and like I said, I go to that same store several times a week and have never given a thought to getting robbed in the parking lot.

Dh and I are kinda in the same boat. We have a trip planned to Unico 2087 and are unsure about going. For now, we've decided to go ahead and go. We will, of course, reevaluate as our trip gets closer (trip is at the end of April).
That said, our resort has told us not to fly private, not to rent a car, and encourages us to let the embassy know we are there.
edited to add: they said not to fly private because the cartels will hijack the plane when it lands.

Check your travel insurance.
My travel insurance WILL NOT COVER ME for anything if I am travelling in an area that Foreign Affairs Canada has deemed unsafe to travel too. I would have to travel under my own risk and I will not do that.
Really annoyed at people who put themselves in danger or don't buy the correct travel insurance and then go on social media and beg for funds to help them get home. Buy the proper insurance like a responsible adult would do.

I would. We went in July and I went back and forth but we ended up going to 3 different resorts and spent some time in town in Playa Del Carmen and had no issues at all. Shit happens everywhere and when I really think about it I don't know that if I lived somewhere else I would visit the US for all the mass shootings and other crazy violence but i'm here everyday. The risk seems higher sometimes (atrb_partsz)

I would go, it sounds like you are aware and plan to stay/travel with your resort. They will keep you safe if they continue to want tourism money.
I would also note to delete any banking apps on your phone.

I went mid February on a girls trip 4 of us. We stayed at Moon Palace and never left resort. We felt safe. We were there for a music festival We did have a limo takes us to and from resort. I registered through the State Dept website on with travel dates, companions and contact stateside. The last few weeks have been crazy, but they included sir travel in US too.

We drove down to Cabo in December and back in Jan. We drove down via the mainland (nogales, az) and then took the ferry over to Baja. We didn't have any safety concerns. We did have a delay on the way back because the ferry was canceled for the day we were supposed to go because El Chapo's son had been arrested and there were issues in the Mexican state where the ferry was supposed to land. But it all worked out the following day and we didn't have any issues.
I haven't been to Cancun, but we have been going to Cabo since 2006 and have now driven down 3 times (the rest of the years we have flown) and we have never felt unsafe.

No, I would not. The travel advisories for Mexico are between a level 3 and level 4, depending on the area. That is beyond my comfort level.

No. Based off of one publicized incident in a different area, that would not dissuade me. But I would avoid Mexico until there is more clarity on how this is going to be handled.

I would probably go, knowing to stay on the resort and not venture out. Now that is if my travel plans have already been made. If I was asked to go right now and make plans, I would say let's go somewhere else. I'm not a huge worry wart about things though.

Nope. Better options in the Caribbean with less risk. And I say that as someone who has lived in some sketchy places abroad.

I would not.
Mexico really needs to do something about the drug cartels. They will lose a ton of money from tourism and people going there for medical reasons.

Quintana Roo is one of the “safer” states right now. Probably because resort owners are paying for protection for their tourists. Always check the State department travel advisories before traveling outside the US and register with the State department. They will update you with any emergencies. We saw the usefulness of this with COVID and evacuating out of foreign countries when airlines were shutting down or restricted from traveling to the US. travel.state.gov/content/travel/en/traveladvisories/traveladvisories/mexico-travel-advisory.html

I've always been an optimist so I really have no second thoughts about taking this trip. I would still go - you are traveling by shuttle from the airport to the resort, you are not leaving the resort...as far as safety, I think that is fairly safe.

Nope.
And I am not an “I’m scared” kind of person. I am always a “take the trip anyway” kind of person.
But going to Mexico right now just seems flat out stupid.

If you stay on the resort and don't go into town, I think it should be ok to go.
Having said that, I've never been south of the border and I've lived within a 2 hour drive of the border all my life. I have no burning desire to go to Mexico, especially with so many other places on my list I want to see.

I went to Cancun in 2002, so this is out of date. I do want to mention that there were alot of people begging as I came out of the effort and offering us rides. I was glad that I saw a couple of male colleagues who were on the same flight shared a cab with me. I was comfortable staying at the resort at the time, but was cautioned about leaving the resort on my own. Our conference sponsored a bus trip to Chichen Itza. The rest area that we stopped at was really gross. You had to pee over a hole in the rest room.
I am very cautious and would probably not go now.

If you use hotel transportation from the airport and only stay on resort, you should be fine. But personally I would not feel comfortable traveling to Mexico right now. It makes me sad because I'd love to take my kids and see where some of our ancestors came from.
