On my bucket list is to see all 50 states. I've been to about 20 and now that we are retired I'd like to seriously tackle this. I've already been to Alaska and Hawaii, so it makes it easier to tackle via road trip. We would be hoteling and taking the doggo with us. Did you go to several states at once? Follow a particular highway that leads you through them at once? Any suggestions are appreciated. ************************************************************ To keep track of visits you can use a state capitol passport: visitthemallpassports.com/And there is one for National Parks: americasnationalparks.org/passport-to-your-national-parks/#:~:text=Take%20your%20Passport%20to%20any,and%20location%20of%20your%20visit.

I would love to see all 50 states. I’ve probably been to about half. How about something like Route 66? I don’t know what you are at, or where you have already been, but that will take you all the way from Santa Monica CA to Chicago. All of it isn’t drivable anymore, but I’ve read about 80% of it still is.
ETA - We did a 2-week driving trip of New Mexico-Arizona-Nevada once. It was fun. I don’t think I would want to do all 50 states at once. I would want to spend some time at interesting place.

I've been to the 48. Almost to Alaska, but the ferry was out of commission for 3 weeks and we were running out of time, so driving another route was out of the question. Living in Colorado, it makes it a bit easier to go in any one direction. Trips to the states that surround Colorado were easy 7-10 day road trips. Then for the outer states we usually would take about 3-4 weeks. We took it by coast. Drive to Washington state and drive the coast down to San Francisco. Drove to San Francisco and then down to San Diego and then along the boarder to Texas. Drove to Texas and then drove the coast to Florida and so on. Drove southern states to Florida an up the coast. For the longest time, we had not hit N Dakoka Wisconsin and Minnesota, so we specifially took a road trip to cover those states. We usually would map out a plan day by day, but it was not set in stone. We drove til we found something of interest. Stopped when we wanted etc. I never booked a hotel until the night before if we knew where we would end up the next evening. Sometimes I booked in the morning or around nooon. I belong to several hotel rewards programs, so I always had at least a small discount on rooms, as at least one of them would cover whatever hotel was in that particular town/city. Have you ever seen the map that floats around social media on a route to cover all 48 states? Its kind of fun to look at, but I know it misses some really good sight seeing and attractions in particular states, but could give you an idea. 48 States Route MapHave fun. I love road trips.

It is also on my list. I am up to about 45 or so I think I have 4 or 5 to go. The PNW, Alaska, and Montana are about all that I have left. I have done them in bits and pieces over time so there wasn’t really a route as they were more in groups. However we did take about 6 weeks to go from Florida to California along the bottom of the US and up the California coast as one of the longer trips.
Good luck, there is a lot to see in this big land of ours.
ETA - closer to home, I am also working on the 251 club for my state of Vermont. There are 251 cities, towns and gores. Probably throughout my life I have been to them all but I am documenting them now in a journal/book that has them all list. The fun things that you can do when you come from a small state. 😄

Michigan Ohio Indiana Illinois Kentucky Tennessee Pennsylvania New York West Virginia Virginia North Carolina Florida Texas Our criteria for counting a state as collected is - You have to do something unique to that state. It does NOT count if you drive through, stop for gas, have a layover, spend the night in a hotel, etc. It only counts if you visit or do something you can’t do anywhere else - a National Park, a historic site, a museum. Usually we try to hit the thing that state is most famous for (a landmark, big city, etc.).

My family is on a mission to visit all 50 states before our oldest graduates from high school.
We currently have 35 states collected. We’ll get one more over Spring Break. We have plans to get DC plus 6 more states in June and that will leave us with 6 states in the continental US, plus Alaska and Hawaii.
We do a mix of trips to just one state and longer road trips to check off lots of states on one trip. The last few summers we’ve done a one month long road trip each year to check off lots of states.
We start by making lists of what we want to do in each state. We try to think of what that state is known for and do something related to that (like Disney World for Florida, Vegas for Nevada, Grand Canyon for Arizona). After we factor in the most famous thing, we look for other interesting sites near there. Then, we see what other states are in driving distance and start plotting courses.

Ours wasn't structured, we just kind a fell into it - definitely helps to have family spread around - we knocked out a ton on a show off the great grandbaby/great grandniece roadtrip: Indiana, Wisconsin, Iowa, Minnesota, South Dakota, Nebraska, Kansas, Missouri and Texas - oh PSA - don't do this with a nursing infant it is definitely one of Dante's rings of hell. We lived on both coasts, so that helped knock out a ton as well. Throw in some ballet summer intensives, regional swim meets, robotics tournaments and college visits and vacations and you realize that you've hit them all but Alaska. Although a couple were work trips which in all honestly am not sure count for experiencing a state.

I have been to most of the western states. I need to hit the south and east. We deliberately routed through several states so I could know them off the list. We drove from Nebraska to Maine via Ohio, New York, Vermont and New Hampshire. Came back through Massachusetts and Connecticut. I had already been in Iowa, Illinois and Indiana so those were just drive throughs. My next plan is North through North Dakota, hit Montana and Idaho.

I've been to 27 without trying. It helps if you have family spread across the country. Or if you live in New England, where there are five states within two hours of me. Or if your kids looked at many colleges all up and down the East Coast.

I've been to 48--Alaska and Hawaii are still to visit. For us, we see what we want to see without the agenda of checking states off the list. But we will often did a side trip if we were close to a border.
If I were traveling with the idea of checking off all 50 states, I'd probably group them together in a logical group. For example, if you are driving through a state to get to your destination. Unless you are on a schedule, why not take a break in your day and do something fun in the state that you are traveling through. And in the New England area, it makes sense when you can drive an hour in any direction and be in another state.

I've always lived on the east coast and have done several cross-country road trips plus Alaska and Hawaii so most were done. The last one was North Dakota. We did a loop, flew into Bozeman, MT, rented a car, headed east to S Dakota then North Dakota, then Glacier National Park and back to Bozeman. The ones in the west are harder to hit since they are so large. Have fun on your quest!

We say you have to spend the night and do an activity in that state. We’ve got the east coast through quite a bit of the Midwest. We’ll need a few weeks for a trip out west. Probably a couple of times.

Visiting all 50 states has been a goal of mine for several years, and I've been to 46 to date. It helped that my parents believed that travel was educational and when I graduated from high school I'd been to 28 states. So many memories of mom telling my dad "we have to stop there because it's educational!". I am hoping to finish up my last 4 states within the next 12 months, which are North Dakota, Michigan, Alaska and Hawaii. Perhaps Zee and I should plan a trip as I see she needs 3 of the same states!

One of my best friends just finished and she saved North Dakota for last. It turns out if you save it for last, you can register ahead of time and you get a t-shirt! I think she went into Fargo to get it.

I have been to 49 Missing Hawaii.
I was a military brat and we drove to my dad's duty stations so saw a lot that way. In 2000 we drove to the east coast and back from Alaska. Took 7 weeks and saw much that way.

But if I was on the east coast it was the equivalent of 14 as I'd been up and down the coast. I remember when I moved to New England and was pretty shocked when I was in like 4 states in an afternoon - more than I'd been to in my whole life.

It’s on my bucket list too and has been for a while. I’m missing Colorado and New Mexico in the SW; Oregon in the NW; Oklahoma, Arkansas, Louisiana, Mississippi, in the South; S Carolina, N. Carolina, Virginia in the SE; and all the states in the NE from W. Virginia on up the coast and everything east of Ohio. I’ve been to both Alaska and Hawaii.

We have visited 49 states and just have North Dakota left. Apparently they give you a shirt that says “save the last for best” at the visitors center since it is a lot of people’s last state. 😂
I love to do big road trips and one of my favorites was flying to key west and spending several weeks driving up the coast to maine. We had visited many of the states before but had a few new ones.

I am not a fan of riding in a car/vehicle. A road trip would do me in. Happy to fly though. I've been 37 states, I believe. I have seen maps online for an all 50 state trip if you are ambitious.

We went to ND this past fall and were so confused by all the “saved the best for last” merchandise there. It’s everywhere.
Apparently, it’s super common for that to be people’s last state (I would have thought Alaska). And the National Parks gift shops all have “saved the best park for last” merch because many people collect National Parks and it’s super common for that to be their last park.
We plan to have Alaska be our last state.

Our goal was taking our kids to all 50! We're at 48 - with Hawaii and Alaska to go. They're all adults now but they want to finish! Seeing groups of states at once on summer road trips was how we did it. So much fun!!
