Let's say your favorite food/condiment item is not available where you live. For me, there is a pizza chain in MO that just recently started selling their pizzas in the grocery store. The closest place to me that I can find is in KS (I'm Colorado). So I am planning a trip to see my mom and I have scouted out the places that have my pizza. I will be picking some up if all goes right. So not really out of my way, but definitely planned.
My DH, who drives over the road, brought me (the same) pizza home years ago. Him and his cousin went to the actual store and bought some and then wrapped them up in a food saver bag and brought home to me on dry ice. My sister's ex-h bought her the same pizza through a delivery place and had them shipped (that was a pretty penny).
I also load up on Braum's Dairy (midwest'ish chain, mostly OK/KS) stuff as well. So planning on bringing back some dip, frozen sausage gravy and misc items (all made by Braums). If I am out there near the holidays I bring home Egg Nog as well.
I brought some chocolate back from Germany that my son had brought home previously.. some of that Kinder kind brand... there is one that they don't sell in the US so loaded up on those.
Can you see a theme here.. getting ready to see my mom and where I am shopping! haha... Oh I might go to Aldi's and see what they have. Our last trip was a bust.. we brought home some dip and froze it.. blech.. ruined it. Good dog treats though for cheap.. Bully sticks.

Just getting it if I'm in the area, no real lengths, I don't think. Well, when I visit family in Illinois, we do go to Wisconsin to get bratwurst and cheese curds.
I have friends and family who have moved from Pittsburgh, and when they return to visit, they buy a few pounds of chipped ham to take home with them. They will stock up on Sarris Chocolates, a local chocolate maker. Also, they will get a quart or so of cole slaw from Primanti Brothers. We also have family that travels to Pittsburgh during Lent just to go to a Lenten fish fry. Apparently, they don't exist in other areas.

There is a Restaurant/Bakery in Southern California that when we visit relatives we will call ahead and order bakery items. They pack them very carefully for us to take on an airplane.

I've gone to great lengths to get certain things over the years. Once we left Louisiana, it was many years before we were able to get Community Coffee. Family members would ship it to me in California. When we went overseas, I would buy a year's worth and include in my shipment! I'd restock on home leave and take it back with me.

We like to pick up spotted cow beer when traveling through Wisconsin (from MN) to see in-laws in Indianapolis. We always stop at Krispy Kreme when we're on vacation, if we see one.

We used to bring home Spanish ham and Manchego cheese until we saw a food sniffing dog at baggage claim searching for ham smugglers. He got quite a few, but not us.

My family on the west coast has visited us in Michigan via road trip just so that they could load up their van with Vernors (ginger ale) because it wasn't available in their area. Maybe Oregon peas can verify that it's available now as they haven't done this in a long time.

We can pretty much get anything nearby since we’re in the NY metro area. I once ordered olive salad from Amazon because I was jonesing for a muffuletta since we’d been to New Orleans recently. For us on a normal day, driving 20 minutes to Danbury for Frank Pepe pizza is a lot.

Oh man - memories! My husband and I decided to fly in lobster for our anniversary (we were engaged in Maine) one year. I thought it was such a great idea and had visions of this being a tradition. Then realized I had to COOK LIVE LOBSTER. Yeah that tradition hit the one and one. I have tried to recreate some favorite meals - ie bought a paella pan or bought Italian flour to make pizza. Some are more successful than others and luckily the world can be a small place via online shopping!

If dh or I travel to San Diego without the other, we always stop at Point Loma seafood and get their crab sandwich on sourdough. They pack up all the ingredients separately and put them on ice for our flight home. It’s SOO good.

I bought a hard sided suitcase so my beer that I bring from California to NJ will be better protected so I 100% support grabbing pizza.
In general I feel like foods a great way to experience a place and love bringing home stuff for my family.

DH just rolls his eyes at me when I hit a grocery store while traveling. I have brought home saffron rice mix, corn bread mix, creamed corn (for the cornbread mix), kleen king, and I don't even know what else over the years. Oh and hot sauce packets from Del Taco.
We also have a Del Taco here, but it's like 45-60 minutes from us and we used to make regular trips there for lunch. Or going the other direction, we'd do the same for a Wienerschnitzel chili dog.

DH just rolls his eyes at me when I hit a grocery store while traveling. Same except my husband is alongside buying more than I am! Once many years ago on a Costa Cruises vacation we visited Caracas, Venezuela as a port. Our tour guide/taxi driver took us to a coffee plantation. My ex-husband and I, my parents, and my aunt all bought bags full of coffee beans to take home. We got pulled out of line reboarding the cruise ship because the drug-sniffing dogs alerted to us. Apparently hiding drugs in coffee was a common way to disguise them. Lol. We were questioned and our packages inspected before being let go. Ended up just being a great story!

Our extended family loves Pancho's cheese dip. It originated at a local restaurant and you can now buy it at grocery stores in the mid-south.
When it was only sold locally, whenever we were going to a family gathering my nieces and nephews would send me their order and we would go to the store and buy at least a dozen containers.
Then they would come by our hotel rooms and knock to get their cheese dip. Looked like we were drug dealers, LOL.
Although for one of my nephews it was a drug. He had been known to eat it with a spoon in his younger years. Although one trip he was the only one smart enough to remember to bring tortilla chips.
I remember when we used to live in Northern Virginia whenever DH drove through Tennessee on a business trip, he would stop at exit 138 in Lebanon to get me several chicken biscuits and a gallon of sweet tea. That was the farthest east that restaurant was.
That's true love right there.

I remembered eating Fritos when I lived in Canada as a child. I could even sing the song from the ad. I had some when I was in the US in 2019, and a friend brought me some the next year (I live in Australia). I was delighted to find that a couple of stores here sell Fritos now. They are uber expensive, but are my guilty pleasure. I'm just about to order some now as a matter of fact.

As an Australian living in Germany, there are a few food items that always get packed into my luggage when I come back here from a visit home, or request from family and friends who come to visit. There is always a last day check for vegemite, timtams and some Aussie confectionary items. Covid lockdown was bad - I left Australia in a hurry (and, I must admit, a bit of a panic) just before the lockdowns kicked in, and forgot to stock up. With nearly two years of closed borders, we nearly ran out of vegemite! We were saved by a vacation to Dubai in late 2021, where we found some - at an exorbitant price - at the Waitrose in Dubai Mall. Also, when I go home to visit, as well as indulging in vanilla slices and lamingtons at any bakery that has them, I will always go out for a seafood curry laksa, char kway teo and decent Chinese food. There just aren't a lot of good Asian restaurants here.

When we go to TN to visit family, we have to take a ton of Better Made chips. And weed. 😂 I am not a huge chip fan, but Better Made is so much better than Lay's. It is not as greasy as Lay's with the right amount of salt. The rainbow chips are my favorite. I haven't had them in awhile, might need to stop and get some.

If I am out there near the holidays I bring home Egg Nog as well. When we lived in Houston, we had neighbors who were also from Oklahoma. Anytime one of us visited Oklahoma, we always returned w/ a couple of gallons of Braums milk for ourselves, and a couple for the neighbors. I don’t care for egg nog in general, but I love Braums egg nog! At Christmastime, we always order frozen pizzas from Lou Malnati’s in Chicago. We get together with another family and play games and eat Lou Malnati’s pizza. We always order a few King Cakes from New Orleans for friends and family during Mardis Gras.

I’ve been known to make a three hour round trip for a crab cake and crab soup from my favorite deli. That’s me. As much as NYC is supposedly full of Italian bakerys my favorite one is in New Jersey. I’ve also traveled long distances for first in the area fast food places like Sonic and Chik Fila.

This is timely....as I am setting off on an approximately 8,000 mile trip tomorrow where I am looking forward to not only SCUBA diving but also indulging in all my favorite Filipino goodies (many on the first day): puto bumbong, babingka, ginataan, and halo halo are on the top of my list. I also regularly travel back to Maryland to get crabs; I SAY I'm visiting my brother and sister, but you know what I'm REALLY after!!

We have had Chicago's Portillos delivered to us here in CO. We are supposed to be getting one in CO soon but when I have it delivered for a special occasion, I can freeze half and eat another set later. Being from the mid west I also have a fondness for Old Dutch (potato chips). They have a puff corn butter flavor that I love that I can't get here in CO. My parents brought some back for me on their last car trip to MN/WI
