flanz You should start looking for "The Cat Who ..." books by Lillian Jackson Braun. I used to have the whole 29 books, but I gave them to one of my teen granddaughters. I bought them at used book stores and garage sales. They feel almost like letters from the town of Pickax. Thanks, Don. I'm not a fan of cozy mysteries, I like a fast pasted action mystery, just not themes of sexual violence, child abuse. I don't want to steep my brain in those negative messages / images.

I came back to this thread to find out who had suggested the Cyrus Haven books by Michael Robotham, but after scanning quickly through the posts I don't see it. So I'll add it to the list! I'm not sure where I got the suggestion from -- maybe the regular reading thread? -- but it showed up as "available" one day on my library account so I downloaded it. Cyrus Haven is a psychologist who works with the police in/near Nottingham England. It was a very quick read with with a nice twist at the end. Slightly unsatisfying ending regarding another main character (the "bad girl" part of the title), but then I discovered it's a series and it looks like the second one picks up that story.

I stumbled upon Vivien Chien's "Noodle Shop Mysteries."
I'm on the second book in the series and so far so good.

Great series ! All three were 5-star reads for me. Both myself and cadoodlebug have mentioned this series in the weekly reading thread. When You are Mine and The Secrets She Keeps are stand-alone novels by this same author which were also very good and received 4 stars from me.

Slightly unsatisfying ending regarding another main character (the "bad girl" part of the title), but then I discovered it's a series and it looks like the second one picks up that story. When I read the last line of the first book, I was so happy to have the second book ready to pick up and read. I also had the 3rd one ready and waiting. I'm so glad I found this series late and was able to read them in succession. Now I have to wait for the next installment.

I don't have to wait for the next one, at least not any longer than it takes to get it from hold at the library. Of course it's nice if that author is continuing to write also, then there's more to look forward to.

So, thanks to this thread I'm halfway through my first Stephanie Plum book (the first of the series, "One for the Money"). So far I love it! I'm sitting here trying not to wake up my husband with my laughing. hahaha Of course I've heard of Janet Evanovich but I'm wondering why I never tried one of her books. And there are SO many more in this series.

And there are SO many more in this series. That's because after about book 6 they are all the same: Stephanie has to arrest someone, she asks Lula to help, it all goes wrong and the person escapes (repeat x2 or 3 or 4) Then Stepanie becomes the target for some criminal, then an animal causes havoc, and grandma goes to a funeral or two. Then Stefanie fools around with Morelli, or Ranger or both. Then at least one car blows up (often several) and Stephanie has to stay at Ranger's house and she showers with his Bulgari shower gel. Someone tries to kill Stephanie and she's rescued by Morelli or Ranger or both. Everyone (except Ranger) eats a lot of Italian food and donuts and fried chicken. And she has the world's longest living hamster. Every single book. I used to read them because I was always curious to see if anything changed, then one year a book started and the criminal had sex with a dog and Lula said it might have liked it...and that was it, I was DONE after that. Will never read a single word she writes again.

I'll give the next few a try and we will see. I feel the same way about the "...in Death" series by J.D. Robb. After reading a few of them I felt like they repeated themselves. Although I've always meant to borrow the very last one just to see where the main characters ended up.
