Right now I work M-F, 8-4:30 pm. My commute is an hour each way (on a good day). In a month, I will be allowed to change my schedule - we can do 5 days, 8 hours, or 4 days 10 hours (there are a couple of other funky options, too).
I'm going to go for the 4 10 hour days from 8:00- 6:30 pm (I could start earlier but I like to drop my daughter off at school on the way to work). And while unconventional, I'm going to take Wednesdays as my day off. It will break up the week a bit and also my daughter gets out of school early on Wednesdays so I can spend more time with her and she also have an activity in the evening this would allow me to be able to drive her to (right now she has to rely on rides from friends).
While they will be looooong days, my commute sucks the life out of me and by the time I get home I don't feel like doing much anyway. I'd rather work more the other days and then have a whole extra day free. Plus I'll save on gas. What's your schedule? Anyone else do 4 10's - how do you like it?

That is awesome. I work 8-5, but I hate hate hate it. Did I mention I hate it? I would much prefer to work early and leave early, even leave at 4:30. At my last job I worked 4 10's and it was fabulous. Having a free day in the middle of the week is a beautiful thing. Good for you - I think you'll love it!!

I have to work 5 days but if I could work 4 10 hour days, I'd jump at the chance!

I worked 4 10's and loved it. I too only worked 2 days with 1 off, then 2 more with 2 off. It feels at first like the days are long but you soon adjust to it. I really feel it's the best work schedule there is. When our 4 10's option was cancelled we all felt like we were leaving in the middle of the work day.

I used to do 9-9's (well, technically 8-9s and 1-8) and at other times, 4-9s and 1-4. Loved that option! I was typically working close to 9 hours anyway, but 10 was just a little too long. I really loved the half day off option, because it was kind of hard to miss a day in the office completely, yet I felt like a kid playing hooky when I'd leave at lunch!

I worked a job 20 years ago where I did this. I loved having Wednesday off! Due to DH's schedule, we seldom went out if town early on a Friday. Stores aren't crowded on Wednesdays and it really broke up the work week.

Yeah, the 4 9's is an option but then it's every other Friday off. I thought about 3 10's and 2 5's because I also worry a bit about being gone a whole day but my commute is a big selling point just going 4 days. I'm glad to hear everyone loved that schedule so much! I'm so looking forward to it. I took today off as a "test" and I am loving it.

I work 8-9s and 1-8 (off every other Friday). It seems to be the perfect balance for me and I also have an hour commute each way. Before this job, I worked 4-10's and it was just a bit too long of a day for me.
I'd love to be off in the middle of the week instead of Friday. Lots of my Dr. offices are closed on Friday so I can't use that off time for appointments.

I worked 4 10's for a while and really liked it. The only downfall for me was I worked those 4 days in a row and by Friday I was just too tired to do anything! So having Wednesday off might help alleviate that.
I'm lucky that right now I can work basically any hours I want as long as I get in 80 hours every 2 weeks. I LOVE the flexibility!

Oh that sounds great. Flexibility is a good thing! The tiredness was one of my reasons for not doing Friday or Monday. I also feel like I wouldn't notice a longer weekend as much as a day off in the middle. lots of places are closed Friday and Monday I've noticed, too, so Wednesday is good for that. Although I can use sick leave for preventive care, but still it's nice to have the option.

I have been working 4 - 10 hour days for almost 10 years now. My day off is Wednesdays. I LOVE having Wednesdays off! Think of it this way, your work week is only EVER 2 days long! I work 6am-4:30pm, but that's because I'd rather not deal with downtown traffic in the the mornings. My drive in and home is usually about 40 minutes.
Hope you enjoy it as much as I have

I do 7:30 to 4, with a 1/2 hour lunch. I like that schedule. It works with DH's, we drive in together and he drops me off and picks me up.
I would definitely work a longer day to be able to work 4 days a week.

I work four 10 hour days too. My extra day off is Friday, but my office is flexible enough that I can switch the day if I need too. It was rough to adjust to at first, but it is so nice to have that third day.

It sounds like you really thought it out and came up with a good solution! Makes sense to take Wed. off, it really breaks up the week! I hope you enjoy your new schedule. Would they let you work from home one day too?
My friend's daughter is a PA and does 4 10 hr. days. She loves it!

It sounds like it will work well for you, especially having more time with your daughter. I also think that just the two hours you will save not commuting one day would be worth it.
I haven't ever worked this kind of schedule, but my cousin works four 10 hour days, and it allows his wife (who is home with– and homeschools– their children) to volunteer on his day off. It has worked really well for them.

My schedule is all of the place because I work in special events - and I mean, literally, ALL OVER. I can work anything from 5 AM - 5 PM, to 5 PM - 3 AM, and in our peak periods it can vary that widely all in the same week. However, to a certain extent, it's great because I can really craft my schedule around DH and DS's schedules. So, I can work the start of an event and be at home in the evenings if DH has an activity, or go in late and work the end of an event if DS has something at his school I want to attend. I thought I would hate it, but most of the time, it's really convenient. On non-event days, my schedule is 10 AM - 6 PM, which gives me exactly enough time to drop of DS at school, go home and pack my lunch/tidy up the house, and then head to work, all while missing the worst of the rush-hour traffic. It works for me

I am 7:45-3:45 with a half hour paid lunch. However, I get to work by 7:15 and leave between 4:15 and 5:00 if I don't want to take all of my work home.

I would love to work from home but that's not an option since I work with clients face to face.

When I worked for the public service our contract was 8:30-4:37 with 45 or 43 min for lunch. This meant we could take off every second Monday or Friday depending on staff coverage. I think my day off was a Monday IIRC. We only worked normally 7.5 hr days and a work week was 35 hours. Or 37.5 if you wanted to flex. I liked the flex system myself. I had a day during the week I could go get may hair done, Dr or dentist or vet. Etc. It was really great. I didn't notice the extra couple of minutes I had to work and getting the time off was great.
ETA my commute downtown was 27 min downtown in the AM and a little longer on the way home due to rush hour traffic. If it rained all bets were off. If I got home before 5:30 I was happy! I liked taking my car to work as I could get home in 15 min and that was nice. Parking downtown was sooooo expensive! It wasn't even very convenient, either. I found listening to an Audible book every day on the bus there and back made it enjoyable. I would only listen to the book at the gym or on the bus as it was a treat for me. I had a new credit every month and books began to pile up as I was listening to some looooooong books but very interesting.

a day off is wonderful if you can easily tolerate the longer days. i'm not one of those people; i really need shorter work days or i get really cranky! ugh! it really varies from person to person, for sure.

Before kids I worked 4-10's and sometimes 3-12's and 1-4. After doing the 12 hour days, they10' s were a piece of cake!

I'm thinking about starting to work earlier and leave earlier. Right now, I pretty much work 8:30 - 3:30ish. Today I worked until 4:30. Last Friday I worked until 6:30. If I could figure out a good way to work 4 days, I'd probably do it. We try to give all our crew members their 40 hours in 4 days - I'm the only one who always works 5 days (I'm the admin - sometimes I work in the field, but I'm mostly in the office). I'm kind of thinking if I could work 7:30-3:30 or something, that would be good.
In my previous job, I had Wednesdays off (worked M, Tu, Th, F, Sat), and I like that. The only problem was that I didn't have to go in until 1:00 on Thursdays, and it just made me not want to go in.

8:30-3:30 isn't 40 hours a week in 5 days.
I just cut my hours in November from 40/week to 35-ish. it's been hard getting used to 5 less. the first week was easy but re figuring my weekly habits has been harder than expected. with the extra time I work out M-Th after work and leave early on Friday.

I used to do 4x 9 hour days. Yes, they were long ass days, but having every Friday off was somewhat worth it for me. The part I hated was my kids had to go to before and after school 4x a week - broke my heart that they had to be there from 7am - 6pm each day.

When I worked 4 10's I had the same exact schedule with days off being Wednesday, Saturday and Sunday. I loved having the week split up like that. If I ever get the chance again to work 4 10's I would pick that schedule again. I mean, how awesome is 2 days on, 1 day off, 2 days on, 2 days off. :-)

I work 6am to 6pm Sunday thru Tuesday and from 6am to noon on Wednesday. I love it! I can make appointments and such on my days off. The only time my hours suck is a Monday holiday. Then we do the 12 hr shift on Sunday, off on Monday and then have to do 12s the next two days. But I have done this for over 10 years and wouldn't change it

I used to work 4 10's and really liked it. Not only do you save gas, you gain those extra two hours of commuting a week. I hope you love it and it works out well for your family.
