Unless you want to hate humanity a little more, don't go looking for the video of the interview they did yesterday with his neighbors. This is local to me so it's finally blown up after not even a blip on the radar. Also, that baby is home and recovering according to the most recent report.

Did they ever say if the homeowner was white? I realize I've made some assumptions.
Honestly, it was just a matter of time. People get so the eff worked up these days about people having the audacity to ring their doorbells as if every front-porch visitor is there to break in and kill them, and so many people here have guns, that obviously at some point (if this hasn't happened already a bunch) a yahoo was going to shoot someone through their door for being so bold as to use the front doorbell for its intended purpose.

A person can’t even stand on a doorstep and ring a doorbell anymore. People on my NextDoor app are always posting photos of someone ringing their doorbell … “Who is this?” “Strangers at my door”, etc. I hope the kid makes it!

A person can’t even stand on a doorstep and ring a doorbell anymore. That’s exactly where you are. Anyone who still thinks every Tom dick and Harry are ok to have a gun just because they can, need their head examined.

Welp I feel less bad about my assumptions. I guess the new update is waiting for victim testimony and will then go from there. Did they call 911? I do NOT understand this ridiculousness about being so freaking terrified to answer your door you need a gun, but you don't call the authorities. There was a case a handful of years ago here where someone actually broke into the house (they were high and confused) - if someone is actually in your house, I'll give you stand your ground. If you OPEN YOUR DOOR. No to the hell - charge him.

It's a horrible story. And it's even worse because the shooter is at home and not in jail pending charges. He is free to go about his business while that poor young man's life is forever changed.

I’m willing to give the police a little time to do an investigation but there better be charges. From what I read he was shot outside of the home, so it isn’t as some are saying that he must have tried to go inside. I also read that he had to go to three houses to get help after being shot. I really hope that is because people didn’t answer the door given the time of day, rather than they answered and denied him help after seeing him.
What I am always struck by is that those who carry guns are the ones who are so scared of other people possibly having guns. The fact that people are so quick to shoot without knowing the full situation tells me they shouldn’t have a gun at all.

Why the hell aren't they identifying the shooter in that article? Because he hasn’t been charged. He should be, and I'm expecting he will. Castle doctrine is not license to just shoot at someone ringing a doorbell.

I've been following this for a couple of days. There had better be justice in this case.
The victim is a band kid, y'all. Missouri All State band. Plays the bass clarinet. What kind of world is it when a band kid can't show up on your doorstep and expect to not be shot?

This is as local to me as it gets. The kid is in my daughter's class at her high school and they live around the corner to us.
To say tensions are high is an understatement. There have been a couple of press conferences saying we're working the process to file charges, it takes time.
There is also conversation around whether or not he just rang the doorbell or rang, then went inside the house - he was confused and there to pick up siblings from a party. I've heard he was shot through the door then the guy stepped outside and shot him again. Either way it's just awful and there have been several protests. I hope they go after this guy with everything they've got.

Likely just got his license, and mom is thrilled to have someone else be the taxi for younger siblings this once. And this happens. I can't even imagine. Who the hell answers the door with a gun in their hand? Someone sitting inside watching Fox News all day and listening to them tell him that the black people and the trans people and the immigrants are all coming to get him. It's sickening.

I saw this on Facebook when a friend posted the GoFund Me link and it is heartbreaking! Especially the part where he tried to get help at other houses (I also hope it was just because people weren’t home )
Something similar actually happened 30 years ago to our neighbor’s 16 year old son Alex . An elderly man shot Alex in the stomach when he was walking home from somewhere. The man was all confused and said he thought he was going to rob him. Alex was not that type of person! Our neighborhood was starting to develop more crime and that incident was what sent my parents over the edge to move out.

When they attempted to interview the neighbors, there was one guy in a vehicle talking about how he loves the neighbor like family, they're gonna protect their own. Every single person who turned him away should have charges filed, too. Then you have local radio idiots posting about "well, they keep upping the GoFundMe amount, that's sketchy". Vile, vile people.

Just going to reiterate this - do NOT understand this mentality. My heart hurts for his parents and I'm so happy to hear that he's recovering. I'll repost what I said above, did this coward call 911? Or did he think shooting someone on his porch was a rationale first step.

Do people just grab their guns when the doorbell rings?? Fucking insanity.
ETA I hope the go fund me raises a fucking mint for this family. That poor kid. His poor parents. It’s sickening.

I know a TON - seriously TON of people who never answer their door. Get it, last time someone came to my door unexpectedly who wasn't selling something - exactly zero. But don't answer -this is the part that makes exactly zero sense. If I'm actually concerned that someone rang my door bell at 10pm - I just wouldn't answer - if they persisted and I was REALLY worried - I'd call 911. In no scenario does shooting person on my porch factor in!

This is disgusting and he better be charged. And the neighbors? I wish they could be charged too. Of course, no gum reform is needed. Anywhere. Today was reported in my local news that a 20 year woman was shot in a rural area not far from me when she pulled into the wrong driveway. She's dead. Link may be behind a paywall. link
How have people gotten so paranoid that when someone enters their property they immediately think they are in danger? Well, I know how. It's watching too much 24 hour "news".

No, the neighbors would not help. At the 3rd house, the neighbor told him to lay on the ground and he passed out. Again, I'm hearing conflicting reports on that. The one guy I read who did help him said he fell down as he was running toward him and when he tried to get back up the helper said no no stay down as he'd been shot. Helper guy thought he was dead when he fell down. So while I don't disagree that there may have been people who refused to help, there were also those who did hear his cries for help and came and did help him.

I read that the 3rd neighbor was on a call with 911 and the operator told her not to go outside because they didn’t know where the shooter was. It sounded like she wanted to rush out there and help him, but was told to stay indoors.
I am glad to read that charges have been filed!
