I went to our parking garage after school yesterday where I saw a colleague tell my friend (and colleague) that she had a flat.
Friend had to go pick up her daughter at school and had JUST BEEN AT THE DEALERSHIP the day before with a low tire light. She didn't have the time to wait for AAA.
I changed her tire while she was on the phone with the dealership. I think it's been 30+ years since I last did so, but it was easy peasy. Fortunately she had a donut. So many cars nowadays don't have them.
People are in awe that I was actually able to do it. It was no biggie at all, and I was happy to be the hero of the moment and welcomed the FB accolades, lol.
So, have you changed a tire lately? (Or could you?)
DS22 totally didn't believe I did it, until I showed him video. I don't even know if he would be able to change his own tire.

I have changed a tire. In the 1980s. Would not rely on my current skillz.

I know how to do it (kind of) but I've never had to do it. DSO changed a tyre on my car recently, after I drove over a screw in the garage. The time before that, I got a flat tyre at work. I had to call out roadside assistance because it was dark and late and I wasn't confident enough to try to do it myself. When I told the guy that I was embarrassed that I couldn't do it myself, he said that I wouldn't have been able to anyway. He needed some kind of machine to get the bolts off. The last time I'd bought new tyres, they had used a machine to tighten the bolts, and he said they were way too tight to loosen by hand. That made me feel better!

I know how, but I have never been strong enough to get the lug nuts off. I think it's pretty crazy that so many cars aren't coming with spares these days. I get flats at least once or twice a year, I would not be comfortable driving around without a spare.

I can change a tire but the last time I tried I still had to call AAA because I could not get the lug nuts loosened now that are done by pneumatic wrench when I have my tires changed. So I could definitely change my own tire if I could get the old one off.

My friend got a flat during school pickup about 8 years ago and one of the hardest part was to find the spare. She had a minivan. I read the manual to help find it and then another friend changed it out.

I did that 50 - 60 years ago. I stopped working on my cars when I opened the hood on my car and couldn't see the V8 engine because of the air filter and shrouds. I now have people.

I have too many to count. But that stated in my uncle's driveway when I was 17. He asked if I knew how, umm yes.. He said he would show me the proper way to do it. Way back then we used bumper jacks.
He told me I was safer on the side of the road with a lug wrench in my hand then not. Thinking someone would be less likely to mess with me and actually stop to really help. They didn't, I changed them all!
Thank heavens for the side jacks now ...

Nope, never changed one and don't plan to start now. That's what AAA is for!

Never gonna even try ever again after my last attempt. The lug nuts were so tight my DH even had a little trouble!
I have a husband, son, awesome neighbor guy, or Progressive roadside assistance for that. I know how in theory but it's not something I'm ever going to do again, like mowing the lawn.

I changed one recently. I took car care in high school, and was then in the Army, so I do have some motor skills, but I haven't used them since my mid 30s. Anyway, ds22 "needed" to swap rear wheels on the car he just bought with the ones on his old car. I told him we could take it in, but he insisted he needed the practice. Figuring it was going to take too long if I sat there and watched him, I went ahead and helped. He was duly impressed that I was far quicker than he was. 😁

Haven't changed a tire in quite a few years but when I did I used to just stand or bounce on the lug wrench to break the lug nuts free.

I’ve helped change a tire. Does that count?
But I did jump start a lady’s car at Starbucks on Thursday morning. I have a handy dandy portable charger in my car…super easy to use. It didn’t even take 5 minutes and she was so grateful. That charger is the best thing I’ve bought for my car, and I think it was because of the Peas!

I learned the hard way... don't use the car battery with devices connected, radio, tablets, etc.. for hours while waiting to pick up kids. Your battery will die...lol. Luckily parked in a good space where someone gave me a jump.

Even though this is a tire thread... another tidbit: While moving things into the back of your car, moving to a new home, for example, and leave the tail gate up too long, the battery will drain (Subaru Ascent). Luckily, my car was parked to get a jump. Not something that I considered, as old cars did not have the electronics and could keep the tail gate up/down.

I have a Forester and make sure that if I am leaving the hatch up for any extended time to shut off the interior (dome/side) lights. I had a problem with my 2016 forester’s battery going dead for not much of a reason, but not had that same issue with my 2021. I was also thinking that the 2021 had something that would shut off the interior lights if the hatch was opened too long…but after the 2016 I don’t chance it and shut them off when leaving the back open for an extended period.

Last time I needed to change a tire the lug nuts wouldn’t budge. Called a tow truck and they couldn’t move them either. Had to be towed to the garage for them to change it. I, theoretically, know how but I pay for AAA and wouldn’t even try.

I could do it....but DH would rather me call him or AAA. This was me - DH refused to let me do it, and I would not want to try doing it along the side of the road for the first time. The big problem with that now is he is gone and now it takes about two hours for AAA to arrive. So, this is a good reminder for me to practice now in my driveway before any emergency comes up

I know how, but the lug nuts are tightened too tightly nowadays, and it'd be quite a feat of strength to get them off by hand.
We use AAA for that now.

When my father bought me my first car, he made me change a tire on it myself before I was allowed to drive it. I also took a basic tune-up course at my local tech school just for fun. (I learned how to set a gap on a spark plug for one thing - cars don’t even have those anymore. Lol.)
I have changed/helped change a few tires in the distant past. But the last few flats I’ve had, I’ve used AAA. Why not if you pay for the service? I do know where to find the special wheel lock key for the locking lug nuts on my Lexus. It’s in a compartment near the spare.

My father made all of us (his 7 daughters) change a tire before he allowed us to drive.
I am not sure with the power lug nut drivers making the lug nuts so tight I am not sure I could get them off now.
side story: in 1972 my roommate and I were out and had a flat. I pulled off to change it. We were in a driveway that led to an apartment building. When I finished changing the tire, I was having trouble getting the hub cap back on. A man(in his 30s) came out of the apartment and helped me get it back on. Then he told me he and his friend had sat on the porch of the apartment and watched. They had a bet on whether I could do it or not, otherwise he would have helped me. Two other times when I had a flat men passing by stopped and did the job for me. Thankfully it has been a long time since I had a flat.

I have with the help of the owner's manual, but not lately. I was never able to undo the lug nuts by hand; I always had to stand on the tool to loosen them. These days, I don't need to prove anything so I would call AAA.

I know how. But, I can never get the lug nuts off even jumping on the wrench. So I just call AAA now. Last time even the AAA guy struggled to get the lug nuts off.
