Are cans being made different, am I getting old and weak or is my can opener a piece of shit? I will spend $50 for a can opener that will work for more than 6 months. Any recommendations? TIA!

I've only used manual can openers. I don't even know how to use an electric one. Sorry you are having problems.

Second this! Plus the no-visible-brand one we got as a wedding present that is still going strong after 31 years.

I bought THIS ONE and LOVE it - it is the best can opener I have ever owned - so smooth and cuts so well.

This is the one I use. I don't open a lot of cans and the electric can opener on my counter was old and nasty. The OXO is just as easy to use as the electric. I think it might even be easier to use.

I've had electric can openers and I like them but I don’t want one sitting on my counter plugged in…ugly. It is too much hassle to dig it out of the cabinet and plug it in before I can open a can and then also, I have to put it away.
I just buy the hand openers from Dollar Tree for a dollar apiece. I usually buy two at a time and always have a new spare on hand. When one get dull I toss it and use a new one. They last two to three years and I can toss them in the drawer under my cutting board.

My can opener dents cans now, so I do think it is something to do with the cans. You should hear the swearing when I have to open a small can of tomato paste. 😡

I love the Rosle can opener. Leaves the can smooth, so no cuts.

This is what I use now. I just bought a backup, but my original one has been going strong for years and shows no signs of trouble yet. I used to use another brand (I forget which, but maybe Swing Away or something like that) and I’d have to replace them every couple of years. I love this OXO can opener soooo much. OXO Good Grips can opener (the basic model)

I spent a lot on a cutco can opener manual.. and have had it for years and I just love it. I like I can put it in the dishwasher.. and they stand warranty for life.

My OXO can open was a piece of crap. As was it's free replacement. It was also difficult for dd to use (EDS).
So I went back to a Kitchenaid manual csn open. The one I had that broke was about 6 years old. I have had the current one over a year.
It is the classic version.

I'll have to save this thread. I still have the can opener I went to college with in 1988 and it still works perfectly. I live in fear of the day if breaks. LOL

Throwing another suggestion out there. This one is fabulous. It takes a minute to figure out how to get it on the can, but once you do, it's great.

for a manual opener, i like the OXO brand. it the kind that cuts the lid clean and the coated handles make for easy and comfy gripping.
