The quake struck in Morocco’s High Atlas mountain range shortly after 11 p.m. local time at the relatively shallow depth of 18.5 kilometers (11.4 miles), USGS said, with the epicenter located about 72 kilometers (44.7 miles) southwest of Marrakech, a city of some 840,000 people and a popular tourist destination. At least 296 people were killed, and 153 others were wounded, Morocco’s Interior Ministry said Saturday www.cnn.com/2023/09/08/africa/morocco-6-8-magnitude-earthquake-intl-hnk/index.html

My phone told me about the earthquake, and I was worried about the people there. 6.8 is a pretty good-sized quake in an urban area. ETA I hope allipeas and her family are okay.

How awful! My thoughts immediately went to allipeas, and I'm glad to hear that she lives far from the epicentre. (Still hoping she checks in anyway!)

Glad allipeas isn't near. It must be tough when an unexpected earthquake lashes out in an area that has no reason to have an earthquake preparedness system. My thoughts are with those that have lost loved ones and personal property.

Good morning Peas!
Thank you all for checking in on me.
We are 250 miles from the epicenter and let me tell you...we felt it quite a bit. Our dog had just been very agitated last night. Seemed like she was barking at every little thing (or so we thought). The kids were in bed and I was in a small family room upstairs. DH was in the bathroom brushing his teeth. It was very quiet. I started to hear a strange noise that sounded like dripping water or something like that. Then I started to "feel" something and as it got stronger, it took me a few seconds to realize it was an earthquake because the shaking got stronger. About the time I realized what was happening and jumped up to get the kids, they both came out of the rooms at the same time. DD was big time freaking out and saying that her bed (she has a canopy) was shaking. My big DS came out of his room and his eyes were all big and he was mouthing to me "What's happening?" because he didn't want to freak out DD. DH heard us and came out of our room (he didn't feel anything in the bathroom) and we all just stood there looking at our chandelier over the stairs that was swaying back and forth. I don't mean just a little...it was swaying big time back and forth. I think we were just in shock. DH had gone to this big window we have that overlooks the back yard and he said that he could see the waves in the pool. It took a while for the phone calls to go through so that we could check on family members. All safe thank god!
I do have a close friend in Marrakech though. She told me that while their house is ok, everything came off the walls. She actually said her teeth were chattering as they were running out of the house. She said the family spent the night outside like so many others. She is out this morning to get to some stranded British students. The US Embassy has been sending out emails to expats about it.
I am so sad to see so many deaths already. No one knew just how bad it was because it happened so late. I am certain that as the days come, the number will climb. The pictures and video that we are seeing on the local media is just devastating.
The crazy thing is that our kids are set to go on a week long "Week Without Walls" trip with their school the week after next to THIS region. Not sure what is going to happen with that. DH and I were counting our blessings that the trip wasn't this week. I was terrified in those seconds trying to get to them when they were IN the house!
I am sure the coming days are going to be tough. Moroccans are hospitable people to begin with so I know that the whole country is going to band together to help. Lots of prayers for those that were extremely effected.
We are all still in a daze about it this morning.

I got up in the middle of the night to go to the bathroom and I always grab my phone to use as a light rather than turn any other lights on... So I saw the BBC notification about the earthquake. I thought of you right away. The images coming from the area are just horrible.

The epicenter is in the Atlas Mountain regions which has some remote villages up there. News is coming out that those villages have been razed. Help hasn't been able to get to these regions yet and there is such limited time to save people that are trapped.
My friends in Marrakech have been posting images on their personal media and it's just shocking. Unbelievable.
Lots of military vehicles on the road today. I am certain they are heading down there.
Still in shock!

Thank you for checking in allipeas. I’m glad you and your family are unharmed. There will be people/families in the remote villages that no one will know are lost.

So sad to see the extent of this disaster but glad you’re ok Allipeas. I gather it was quite a shallow quake hence the devastation partly 😞
