I subscribe to Next Door in my city and I am amazed at the weird posts out there. In addition to the plethora of lost cat/dog posts there is an equal number of strange/weird posts. For example:
Don't use your ATM card in the machine. You should go directly to the teller. How does that even work?
Chipotle is dirty and disgusting. Don't go there but also don't contact corporate. Instead, rant on ND. Let's blast any business instead of contacting directly. Even better, bash loudly if it is a small, local business.
The governor is an idiot and should be impeached. The governor is not eligible for reelection and his political rival was an M.D. who thought Covid wasn't real and encouraged people not to get vaccinated.
Don't get me started on the many conspiracy theories about why cars drive by your house...slowly...Obviously they are up to some nefarious purpose.
Anyone else have a story to tell?

WE get a lot of weird posts on Next Door too. There's usually a post about I can't pay my rent, I have no place to live, and people lurking in the streets.

I signed up a couple of years ago, and within a month, I got off. It was awful! We have a local city FB page that is GREAT. I use that.

I am on ND but don’t use it a lot, for exactly the reason you said.
The other day, a guy posted that he was receiving disability in CA and moved to GA a couple of months ago and since his disability wasn’t enough for rent, he went back to work. Then proceeded to ask 3,000 people to send him $10 to his Go Fund Me account (which he linked) because he had to repay $30,000 of disability payments.
You see all kind of stuff on there.

Mine is a lot of coyote sightings and "don't put your dog crap in my bin" posts. The one the I'm really tired of is the constantly complaining about the new bike lanes. Like sorry you can't barrel down the road in your F350 anymore.

I signed up for Next Door several years ago. For some reason (unknown to me) I was immediately made a Lead for my neighborhood. That "perk" means that I get to vote on strange posts, as to keeping them or deleting them. In the beginning I had to vote on whether to allow a person on the site or not. I didn't like that because I had no idea if a person really lived at the address or not.
Lately some people come to ND to create or continue a neighborhood fight/disagreement. I have gained useful information there about things happening in the city.

I don't go on there for exactly that reason!
My community FB page is bad enough with the "suspicious vehicle" posts.

I haven't been on it for at least a year.. I kinda forgot about it. This is the one that drives me insane:
They are building something.. What is it? Another tire store? Another parts store? Another Mexican restaurant? Another health clinic? Another this that and the other.
Why don't they build a Sprouts here? Why don't we ever get anything like Trader Joes? Why don't we get healthier options in restaurants? Why don't we get this that and the other?
I live in a small'ish town that is growing.. but certain places like Sprouts or Trader Joes are not coming to our town anytime soon, just the population is not big enough for places like that. You would never see those type places in my size town. But yet, every single time a building is started here goes the posts.
That said looks like we are getting a Raising Cains and In and Out... The In and Out is a SHOCKER. So maybe there is hope for these people for a Sprouts or Whole Foods.. hahaha. We only have two grocery stores to pick from.

It is good entertainment some times. Lot of paranoia postings - what was that noise, look at all the chemtrails in the sky, who is this on my ring camera, why is this car stopping in front of my house, etc. One lady posted because a car stopped in front of her house and it turned out the driver stopped to use his cell phone. Lol!
We also get a lot of postings about coyote sightings. Someone will post that “it is 10AM and there is a coyote on Main St”. Someone will reply back “well, it probably isn’t there now”. LOL!
Yeah, some “mean” people on my ND. But there is good too. People losing a pet and someone finding it. News about traffic issues, new businesses coming up, etc.

I had to step away from ND because it was making me crazy. So many posts like this one: "My ring camera caught this kid walking through my front yard last night! Parents these days just do not care what their kids are doing!" Followed by 187 replies mostly like this: "OMG! Call the police!"
I can't take it. My ND seemed to be nothing more than a bunch of busy bodies with way too much time on their hands.

The ND I'm on has wacky posts. If it didn't it probably wouldn't be ND.
This ND has been super helpful with our move to an area we weren't familiar with. I ask questions and for recommendations...ND comes through. I have also been successful selling stuff that we brought down here on ND.

I joined but rarely check it out anymore. Ours has turned into mostly found pets (usually dumped) and animal rescue for all the homeless pets around. Houston does have a severe animal overpopulation problem, but taking over the Next Door pages isn't going to solve it. The posts that aren't about dogs & cats are usually people wanting things for free.
There was a fun one a few years ago. Someone's pot bellied pig got loose in the neighborhood and it caused an uproar. Seems it got loose from the yard of the person pet sitting it for the weekend. The animal rights zealots were all up in arms that 1) had a pig in the city, 2) that they were obviously unfit owners because said pig was loose, 3) the owners should be turned into the police and never allowed to own any pet again. It got really fun when my busy body neighbor got involved. That Monday the owner posted, apologized and thanked those who helped corral the pig. THEN he lit into my neighbor who had been the most vicious towards him on the board! Fun times!
Another reason that I mostly quit ND is that they changed up the views. Originally I could set which neighborhoods I wanted to see (mainly mine and the one next to us) and now I get neighborhoods from all over Houston. Those do me absolutely no good!

Thankfully I must live in a boring ND area or most likely, an active ND board moderator who keeps the weird stuff off. Mainly lost/found pets, crime notification, items for sale, help needed, business referrals (like who is a reliable plumber), etc.

I tried it, but my immediate next door neighbor was on there, I just don't need daily reassurance she is crazy and racist... I'd rather just not know.

our local next door is ok.. few crazy posts.. but lots of good news in local area. I have gotten rid of stuff on it, lent out a bear canister for backpacking during pandemic, and of course there are the pet posts.. which mostly work. I even posted yesterday notification of the navy/marine band performances in our neighborhood. so it is worth keeping up on.. we don't have a neighborhood facebook page.

The city over is all car jackings and robberies….

I call ours the internet version of "get off my lawn". The amount of people losing their minds over kids occasionly playing ding, dong, ditch is insane. I get that it can be annoying, but to rant and rant and threaten to call the police is crazy in my opinion.
And they post their ring cam videos of the offenders. I can't get on board with posting minors on a website to shame them for something that has been done for generations.

When I moved here a few years ago I signed up. And then quickly deleted my account. I live pretty rural and it just wasn't at all interesting or helpful to me at all. In fact, a lot of crazy.

Posting a minor online without their parent's consent for something they did when they as a minor, I think it is uncalled for. We all know the internet is forever.

Right now we have this lady on ours who is starting a gofund me for this "church in Nigeria" She insists is not a scam. She's not the most mentally well and I worry about her. At the same time, she is extremely annoying because she uses NextDoor as her preaching platform.

Our ND has a sub group titled "Wildlife and Birds of North Texas" which I enjoy viewing/reading. Lots of photos from game cameras (trail cameras). It has over 3,000 members from around the state.
We have a game camera and from time to time I have a photo worthy of posting. This morning I posted a photo of a skunk that came by. (it didn't leave a scent behind!)

We have the "bring your pets in because there are coyotes out tonight as well as "if you park in front of my house I'll have your car towed.
And then there are the posts telling everyone about theft from of high value items from their car parked on the driveway and it was unlocked. Of course many of the replies are of the "so sad, too bad" becuase you left a laptop in an unlocked car.

I'm on it, but sometimes it really makes me worry that all my neighbors are legit horrible people. The comments can be so over the top mean spirited.

I think people post it because they don't want to involve the police. They are hoping someone will know the kids and they can settle things with the parents without involving the police. I personally would not post anything if that happened to me.
