Yeah I'm getting old.
Only time I don't is live TV like sports or something that can't keep up with the voices.

British shows, always, as I have a hard time distinguishing British accents from our American accent.

For me, it depends what and where I am watching. In general, no. But if the person is hard to understand (accent or noise) I’ll turn it on.

It's not just "old" people! My 24 year old dd has watched TV and movies like that for years! Drives me nuts when I watch with her! I'm old but I don't use them unless people have a really thick accent ...

So I just started doing this. I was re-watching The Witcher in preparation to watch S3 and a friend said to watch with the sub-titles on. OMG what a difference it made. So many one off comments in the first season that clearly points to multiple timelines. So now I'm watching EVERYTHING with sub-titles. What else am I missing???

yep, I do - I think it helps me better process the dialogue.
I don't do it for live TV because it drives me crazy when there is a delay but definitely for shows and movies.

I don't typically. But I started doing it for Ted Lasso because sometimes I had a hard time with the different British accents when they were talking so fast.

Absolutely not.
I hate them.
I hate that they cover part of the screen, I hate the distraction of the motion of the words moving, I hate when there are typos or mistakes.

Yes, it helps me comprehend what is being said. I have four kids and a DH who plays loud video games, I can only turn the TV up so much to drown out whatever noise they are making before it rattles the walls... subtitles save our sanity. I sometimes us them when watching Youtube, but they are much typo-ier and incorrect than regular TV.
I definitely notice it's missing when I'm watching TV at other people's houses or at movie theaters.

I voted depends. I don't have them on for regular TV watching but when I go to bed at night I turn the TV on in the bedroom for a little bit. DH is always already asleep so I don't even have the sound up. Just the subtitles. And I have found I actually like having them.

I don't unless there are heavy accents. My kids do all the time. It drives me nuts when I log into my streaming service and they've been in my profile and turned on captions! I find them distracting.

I do, depending on the tv that I'm watching ... if I'm in the bathtub or working in the kitchen, I always have subtitles so I don't miss anything when I turn on a faucet or hood vent!

We have for years. DH has a lot of hearing loss and that’s the only way he can follow a show. This year we bought a subscription to the Broadway in Boston shows and I was so excited that one of the performances for each show has open captioning. Now DH is happy to go with me. He could ever follow the shows before.

I only rarely watch movies or TV shows but it depends. Am I watching with DH? no because he will pause and re-wind to make sure he catches every single word in the subtitle...he's a slow reader and has fairly recently developed some vision issues which makes that worse. Am I watching by myself? YES and I'll quite possibly mute the volume.

We began using CC for DH who has hearing problems. Now, I really depend on it and feel lost without it.

Her friend group is insane and talk through everything and have side conversations, so no one has any idea what's going on without subtitles.

Did you know that movie theaters offer CC? If you ask, a device is provided--it sits in the cup holder--and you can adjust it so that the captions appear at the bottom of the screen.

No. They drive me crazy. I spend all of my time trying to read them that I don’t pay attention to the actual show, and I get lost easily.

I watch the subtitles more than the actors and get distracted by them. Now if they could get a bouncing ball to go over the words as the actors say them, at least I could be entertained.

Yes. It takes me a few times to find one that is not too intrusive but that I can still see. I have settled on a *casual* font in white with a transparent background, so you can’t see anything except the lettering. Works for me.

I do watch the Witcher and don’t see any spoilers in the post.
We use them occasionally. Shows like the Witcher are examples of where we like to use them. Wrexham is another one.

I use them when there are accents like Wrexham or Outlander.
However, a friend told me if you use subtitles a lot, you sometimes weaken your sense of hearing? Like I guess it is a crutch so then your other sense is lessened. I am not sure about that. I do know if I watch TikTOk or watch tv with subtitles too long, my eyes are more tired.

Never. I'm rarely totally focused on a show anyway, so they wouldn't benefit me.

The spoiler is the multiple timelines... if you watch it... that is something you dont know... and it makes it tricky to follow.. then when you realize... its like ohhhh duhhh...
So yeah it is a spoiler and now when you watch it.. you will already know... lol
