I work about 40 minutes from home in a windowless office. I really like my job, but I try to leave the office at lunchtime to get some fresh air and move my body since I sit at a desk all day.
A couple of years ago I started going to the thrift store 2-4 times/month on my lunch break. I have two Goodwill stores within 3 miles of my office (one east, one west), and I rotate between the two. I've picked up so many great things at the thrift on my lunch break!
Today, I found a new with tags black, sleeveless Calvin Kline dress for $4.75! The original tag has it priced at $89.99! I am so excited. It's perfect for work, paired with a blazer and black pumps.
I find it so relaxing to wander the thrift store for an hour and not think about work or anything else. Sometimes I walk away with nothing, sometimes I end up with a cart full, but I don't think I've ever spent more than $25. It's a relatively inexpensive way to de-stress during the week.
I know we've had thrifting threads before, but please share your latest thrifting find!
ETA: I tried on the dress with a White House Black Market blazer from my closet and it fits like a glove! I love it!

I enjoy wandering the thrift shops as well. I don't buy a lot but I do pick up toys for the grandkids to keep at our house and some crafty things. My latest deal was a pair of hockey skates for my three year old grandson for $5. I mailed them and my daughter sent me a video of him opening the parcel - he was very excited. Made my day!!!

I am a member of an MCM Facebook group, and I am stunned at some of the amazing things people pick up in thrift stores in the US. I was reading some of the posts in the group last weekend, and was so inspired, I raced down to an op shop about 15 minutes from my house. Most op shops are closed on Sundays, but I knew this one would be open. Sadly I didn't find any MCM treasures, but I did leave with a King size doona (comforter) for the spare bed, two skirts, a pair of jeans, a dressy tank top, and a t-shirt. I spent $112. The doona was the most expensive, it was $59. Today, I found a new with tags black, sleeveless Calvin Kline dress for $4.75! A Calvin Klein dress in an op shop here would be MUCH more than that. I expect it would be around $15-20. Then again, the original price would also be a lot more than $90! What a great find for you!

Good shopping, well done you! I love op shopping - it's so interesting to browse and I'm often googling things/brands I haven't seen before. And best of all, if I really like something I can usually justify buying it on account of what a bargain it is and how I'm supporting a good cause.😇 Here's my find from yesterday from one of the op shops that's run by our local Hospice - a new with tags Italian linen top with a silky soft cotton floaty lining for NZD$15 (about USD$9, AUD$14, £7) the regular price had been removed but knowing the store it came from I'd guess it would've been about NZD$129 (about USD$76, AUD$120, £62).

I got a milk glass raised cake stand to use at my DD’s wedding this weekend. I have a whole collection of cake stands. None were white.
Got home the next day, opened the car door, box fell out and it broke. Kind of sick about it now.

It's been a good minute since I've actually bought anything at the thrift store, but I went before I started working where I do now because I knew I couldn't get away with wearing jeans every day (which is funny since I'm in sweatpants 98% of the time now).
But I digress.
I bought some pants that needed no hemming (a small miracle), but the real winner was the $14 wool peacoat from J. Crew (I think -- one of those nice stores [and I'm too lazy to look in the closet]) that retails for $325. I keep telling myself that one of these winters, I'll get the lining replaced since it's torn in a few areas...and then I remember that we rarely get weather cold enough and when I wear coats out to the car, I immediately take them off when I get in. 😂

I love thrift shopping, the thrill of the hunt keeps me going back.
This week I got 3 pairs of pants/jeans for $1 each at a local church thrift shop. I haven’t tried them in yet but at that price if they don’t fit or I don’t like them it’s not much of a loss.

While not exactly thrifting, my guilty pleasure is scoring a Bag Of Crap from Woot! For the low, low price of $9.99 (which includes the shipping because I’m a Prime member) you get a random box full of miscellaneous stuff from Woot (an Amazon offshoot). I’ve gotten so much good stuff in those boxes and it’s almost always worth more than the ten bucks I’ve paid. In various boxes I’ve gotten a Cuisinart immersion blender, a small space heater, a garment steamer, multiple sets of nice wireless headphones and earbuds, wireless phone chargers, dog toys, lots of useful kitchen utensils. Anything we can’t use gets passed along to a family member or friend or it gets donated. I’ve won a few boxes for free too and that’s even more fun!

OK I realize this makes me sound like a crazy person, but my DD isn't engaged yet (but not far off) and she has 2 wedding dresses and veils.
DD loves thrift shopping and it makes up a big percentage of her wardrobe. She also really loves mystery bags and boxes from stores.
I stumbled on shopgoodwill.com and found they have wedding dresses and usually some in the preservation boxes. I joked with her that the boxed one would be a mash up of her favorite things.
With her blessing, I bought one (under $25 including shipping) thinking we would get a ill fitting over the top 80's dress that she could try on, we'd have a laugh, and they she could use it in a cosplay or I'd just donate it straight back.
It turned out to fit almost perfectly and it was a pretty simple style that looked great on her. We agreed to tape it back up in the box and shove it back into the closet so when the time to actually try on dresses we can pull it out and see if it was a contender.
Well apparently this turned out to be my tragic addiction, because a few months later I tried it again. I justified it saying you couldn't see anything but the box on this dress (the previous one had better pictures) and we'd more likely get the silly try on experience we had planned before. Dang it! This one also fit pretty well and was very nice. (I'm still team dress 1 but DD I think is dress 2) so now I have 2 ridiculously sized boxes sealed and shoved in the back of my closet for a year or 2.
DD had told her boyfriend when we bought the first one that she would send him pictures of the try on unless by chance she liked it and would consider it for their wedding. She did not send him pictures of either one.

Yep, deep you're a crazy person! But that will make a great story for the ages if she actually wears one at her wedding! Not a thrift store, but at a chain resale shop called Style Encore, I found a new with tags Banana Republic dress for $24.

I haven't gone to a thrift STORE in a while, but the last couple weeks, I've made HUGE scores at estate sales. I just started a new job where I need to dress 'business casual' again, after 6 months of working laboratory jobs where I wore jeans, tee-shirts, tennis shoes/safety shoes and had to worry about my clothes getting spilled on or dirty. Both estate sales I found had photos of VERY nice clothing, and the listing said ladies clothes from Talbots, etc. At the first estate sale I got more than ten long-sleeved t-shirts (for layering under sweaters) from Eddie Bauer, etc. for $2 each, 4 or 5 silk scarves (I have a weakness for them) for a couple dollars, and two long-sleeved blouses from Talbots for $4 each. The second estate sale I got 2 blazers, 5 pairs of dress pants, more silk scarves, two more blouses, 5 belts (one belt from Talbots with a price tag for $59.50 still on it), three pairs of more casual chinos, etc. The items were mostly from Talbots and a few other higher-end mall stores. When I calculated it all up later using very conservative "new item" prices, I figure that I got >$900 worth of 'classic' clothes for about $150. So I basically refreshed my entire work-appropriate wardrobe for under $200. (I do have to hem up the pants, though- ick.) I'm sorry about your broken cake stand, teddyw ! Anything getting broken sucks, but it sucks EXTRA when it's a super-good-deal you just found. eta: I just realized that right now I'm wearing a J. Jill sweater from an estate sale, too. Got it for less than $5. I love a good thrift score!!

As some of you may know, I sell on eBay. I get most of my things from a thrift store about one mile from my house. It's amazing what I find. Last month I purchased two tiles for $5 and sold both for $175. Last year I purchased a Halloween blow mold for $30 and sold it for $130. Last week I paid $3 for a loom for my granddaughter to make friendship bracelets. It was new and sells for $39. So many people with so much stuff! I've purchased Royal Daulton figures for less than $10. Could go on and on. It's out there, you just need to take the time to look.

I rarely make it up to our Goodwill but I do shop eBay periodically. Just scored a pair of Democracy jeans (my favorite!) and a cute Talbot's plaid blazer, each for less than $20. Was very pleased. I love eBay and occasionally ThredUp and PoshMark for good buys.

I'm gobsmacked at the items people give away on Facebook's Buy Nothing group for my town. Stuff they could sell for hundreds of dollars but don't want to go to the bother. I have scored some lovely items and I'm getting ready to put a bag of size small clothing together to gift. These bags get taken by someone who keeps what they want, add things to the bag and pass it on to another person. Your score sounds awesome!

cadoodlebug For some people it’s more important to get it gone immediately, also I know a lot of people don’t feel like the hassle of dealing with meeting people because of the flakes. Or taking the photos and making the listings and replying to questions, etc. or holding on to it for a garage sale. It’s me. I’m some people. When I make the decision I don’t want something anymore I want it gone immediately if not sooner. As soon as a bag or box is full for donation it gets put in the vehicle immediately just to get it out of the house. We’ve only held on to things to sell them once. And while we made several hundred dollars I would have rather have the space all that time we held on to them. crimsoncat05 so good to “see” you!

My DD tells me all about her buy nothing group and its culture. The unwritten rules, like don’t turn around and sell something you got for free. Do pick stuff up and bring it to someone in need. It amazes me what she can get, and how this group looks out for each other. When my friend started falling frequently due to Parkinson’s, DD asked about a walker, and had one in great shape at my friend’s house within hours.

I'm gobsmacked at the items people give away on Facebook's Buy Nothing group for my town. Do people in your neighborhood or area do curb alerts? In my neighborhood people will put things out on the curb and post in the neighborhood FB group. Clothes, furniture, appliances... My daughter collected so many things before she moved into her house. She got a brand new leaf blower and a carpet cleaner!

Do people in your neighborhood or area do curb alerts? There are probably some in my town but we live in a gated community so it wouldn't work here. We do have trucks that come by and pick up donated items for charities.

Same here, and not only on Buy Nothing but on regular Marketplace listings too. People give away so much stuff! I kind of hate it when people put out a bunch of stuff and post it as a curb alert. I never even bother to go look because I’m sure whatever I saw in the photo that I was interested in will be long gone by the time I get there.

We got rid of a coffee table and our dining room table and chairs by giving them away for free. The market for used furniture is not very good, and when you charge even a small amount, you have to deal with flakes, people who want to argue with your price, people who want you to deliver the item to them, people who want it to be free anyway because their "aunt with cancer" really needs it, etc. Post it for free and someone will be there to pick it up the same day in most cases. No hassle. No longer my problem.

My sister went to a church thrift store in a high end area of Atlanta. We left with bags of good stuff. The prices were fare but the stuff was fabulous!! Dooney and Bourke and a Lilly Pulitzer mini wallets $15 each. We are using in a family host swap. A gorgeous jacket which is some type of wool, it looks very high end and fit. We are 6’ gals and fluffy. I got my SIL 3 Brooks Brothers dress shirts, starched for $12 each. Books were alphabetical and in genre.
We left there and not a goodwill a couple of miles away and found a bit

Love checking out thrift stores! On my recent trip to Vermont, found a baby gap jacket and baby guess jeans for $1 each and carters overalls for $1.50! Also hand knit mittens (new) for $3 each. Way too big for my little grandkids now, but will tuck them away for later! I love to hear about others finds!
