Dear God. I have a 5mm kidney stone terrorizing me right now. Give me your best help in how to make this 1. more bearable and 2. go quicker.
Update:
Well, I ended up at going back to Urgent Care on Sat am in unbearable pain. The pain meds they were giving me just weren't working so I went back fully expecting them to send me home and tell me that I just had to pass the stone and maybe they'd give me some meds for an infection or something. But once I was there, they checked my temperature and I was running fever and when they wanted a urine sample, I literally only give them drops of urine and could not give them more even though I could tell I needed to pee.
So off to the ER they sent me. Sure enough, a second scan showed two stones --- one of them was completely blocking all urine and had lodged itself to where I would not be able to pass it on my own. So they initially planned on using a laser to break it up and let it pass that way but once they got the camera in there, they couldn't use the laser and had to actually go in and retrieve it themselves. The second stone appears to be a broken off part of the larger stone, so they got that one out as well.
I have had two natural, no medicine used child births. And hands down, Saturday morning I was in more pain than I ever had been in before. My stomach was swollen and you could literally feel my full bladder if you touched my stomach.
But I am home now and on antibiotics and starting to feel somewhat normal again.
Thanks for checking on me and sharing your advice. My Dr is testing the stones to see what they are made of so I will know how I need to alter my diet going forward. I never, ever want to deal with this again.

Heating pad, Tylenol and Flomax (need a script). Drink a lot of water. I had a lot of nausea, and Zofran really helped. In the ED Torodol was the only med that touched the pain. Good luck- stones are the absolute worst.

Oh dear. I are they going to see if you can pass it or is there a possibility of you having it shattered? Is it in the ureter or still in the kidney?
Of course plenty of water. I was told at least a gallon a day.
If it is still in the kidney, drink as much water as possible, then lay on your bed and slowly start to slide off head first; just so your butt is on the bed. Stay in that position for as long as you can stand it. Maybe 5-8 minutes. Repeat every hour. This helps dislodge it from the crevases of the kidney so it can get moving down the ureter.
Morphine didn't even help mine, so maybe a stiff drink or two to take the edge off.

I would be talking to a surgeon about your options. I had a large one shattered into bits.. then they vacuumed the bits out. really not too bad. recovery about 4 days at home.

Flowmax. My urologist recommends warm lemon water over just plain water.

Go to a urologist and get a Lithotripsy. They will blast it.

Flowmax. My urologist recommends warm lemon water over just plain water. My daughter's urologist also recommends lemon. And Flomax is the norm for her and DH when they have stones. My DD has tiny ureters and often ends up having to have surgery and heavy duty pain meds. I'm sorry you're dealing with this mom . I hope you pass it as quickly and painlessly as possible.

For the future: I get kidney stones, if I don't drink enough water. When I had the first one in 2010, the ER Doctor told me >> drink half your body weight in ounces of water daily. I fill a water pitcher every morning with the necessary amount of water that I need to consume. The Doctor also said, spread the water out throughout the day and night so I don't over saturate my kidneys. I slack on the water sometimes, and hello kidney stone. It sucks!
For now: Drink lots of water. Cranberry juice. Heating pad. Pain medication.
Hope you feel better soon.

When they went in to shatter DH's kidney stone, the surgeon was able to remove it whole.
Like others have said, drink copious amounts of water and take the strongest drugs they can give you.

I just remembered something. Dh’s Urologist gave him a sieve to strain his urine. They then tested the stones to see what they are made of and advise him on what foods to avoid.

I have super tiny ureters as well. And a tiny urethra too. My urologist lectures me about making sure they only use pediatric catheters on me. Hope today is better for you mom!

Sorry you are facing this. Kidney stones were the cause of my cardiac arrests. Had the arrest after surgery for a stone that rotted through my ureter.

Hopefully they will be the type of stone that can be largely prevented thru diet. Best wishes for successful removal and clearing of the infection.

Best wishes on getting those stones out!
DH drinks tonic water and a cup of water with 1 tsp of baking soda dissolved in water on a daily basis. His history was a stone about every 18 months. Kidney Dr recommended those things to prevent stones forming. It has been 5-6 years now with no stones forming.
