One of my kids asked for "fun socks" as a Hanukkah present, and I decided to check out Target for some inexpensive fun socks. I went to one on Sunday, and the socks were locked up in one of the cases of the sort they've been using for Tide and razors; I rang the buzzer for help a half-dozen times, and after waiting a while and being unable to locate a store employee by wandering around, I left.
I went to a different Target yesterday, and the literal same thing happened; I had to leave because I needed to pick up kids from soccer, but it was a fifteen-minute project and I never did get socks.
WTH? I mean, we can have some conversations about shoplifting (socklifting?), but if you lock up the items and won't free them for purchase, I'm not sure how that . . . helps.

My two local Target stores do not have anything locked up other than baby formula and some electronics. I've seen photos of other stores, but ours is still not like that. And it was in the local news that there was a shoplifting ring broken up at one of these Target's, and they have had lots of theft. So I don't know how they pick which stores to lock up everything and which ones they don't.

Socks at my Target are still free ranging.
If we keep going in this direction, we'll start walking into a store with a list to hand to Mr. or Mrs. Olsen at the Mercantile.

I should knock on something because I don’t want it to change, but my target does not have anything locked up - not socks, not formula, not laundry stuff, not razors.
Target is my store of choice for everything (it’s my main grocery store, where we get our RXs filled, toys, household goods, etc.).

So far, our closest Target does not have anything locked up. However, the bigger Target - that's about 15 minutes away and directly off a freeway exit - does. I don't shop there in person anymore, it's too much of a hassle. I just order online and pickup.

Well the employees are sure not at the registers! 10 registers and only one staffed! And 30 people in the self check out line.

There *might* be some electronics that you need help to access, but I am not even sure if that's right. I use Target for literally everything and if they start locking things up then I will quit using them. No one has time for that.

I haven’t noticed that at my Targets but Walmart has been that way for years along with men’s underwear and some dress pants. It makes shopping difficult to say the least as it can take a while especially if looking for pants. Finding the right waist snd length because of course they aren’t in any order even though they are locked up snd people can’t ruffle through them lol. I understand the theft issue but once again it makes it harder for the normal person that is spending money to do so.
On repeat purchases like mens underwear and socks I buy through pickup so I am not standing there waiting for multiple people to unlock cabinets. Unfortunately there are a lot of locked items throughout the store and you can’t always predict what will be locked up. Not all items are things you want to pickup for sometimes you need to feel an item or you want to compare it to another. Not all items are available for pickup either.
It’s frustrating and annoying that you like most of us are on a schedule and couldn’t get what you needed because they were locked up.

it's amazing to me what they build Target and Walmart "prisons" for. i had to call an associate to release a disposable razor. it was $6.99. and yet, a couple of feet away, were some small items that cost 3x that. just sitting there, in the wild. unincarcerated and living their best lives. and yet the cheapy razor was doing time.
at another store, i saw the Tide and Gain doing time. at Wal-Mart, the underwear was also doing time. and yet some spendy (and very pocketable) electronic items were running free. talk about unfair application of sentencing. not to mention the inconvenience of waiting for someone to allow us access to the prisoners. ugh.

I have not seen a sock prison as of the last time I noticed or went into that area. Pretty sad that cheap socks have to be locked up.
I was at Kohls yesterday and heard this older lady saying that she saw that the store had six pairs of Levi jeans in stock but she couldn't find them. The manager said, you can't go by that much anymore since so much stuff gets stolen. I don't think the lady didn't quite understand that. She was confused.

I wonder if stores go to a system like Costco and have people check every receipt when they go out instead of locking stuff up. I guess putting stuff in purses and such doesn't help though. Since most of Costco stuff is too large for stealing outright. Never mind. Just thinking out loud. Maybe they can change the packaging to Costco size would reduce theft. Uggg. I hate this.

Yes, but only men's socks... and toothpaste, laundry detergent, formula, alcohol, Lego, and most of the electronics. Suburban Target in a city of 200,000ish. I like to read labels, so if I need something that's locked up I buy it somewhere else Fred Meyer closest to me allows the socks to roam free, but has security guards posted at all the doors.

And it is insanely annoying when you need several items unlocked. I felt really bad for the person after me the other day as I needed about 8 things from different lock boxes. I normally do pick up orders but wanted to look around the other day. I won't make that mistake again.

I can appreciate that they are having issues with theft, but then they need to make sure they have enough staff that respond right away when someone needs something. I almost never shop in person anymore, so I have only seen it at craft stores. For a few specific items I don’t mind waiting a few minutes. But I will not shop at a store that uses this method and doesn’t staff for it.

None of my stores I shop at have anything locked up. Yet. Walmart probably does (maybe condoms and formula and razors? Those used to be locked up at my old store) but it's nothing I've been shopping for so I don't know for sure.
This is the suburbs but it's growing very quickly and there are so many more people than even when I moved here 5 1/2 years ago!

What I don't understand is that they lock the things up, but just hand them to you when they unlock them. that's what's crazy about the prisons too. also those dumb little red locks to keep you from sliding a package from the metal rod hanger. this lady and i were waiting for an associate to unlock on of those red thingies and when she finally came to us, she didn't have the key/magnet to unlock it. i was getting an item with cardboard packaging and the associate just ripped the top packaging off the metal rod and gave it to me. well shit, i guess i could have done that too instead of waiting for someone to come.

My Target is always a hot mess. I only do drive ups or have it shipped now. They can deal with the merch that is locked up.

If you live in a cold weather area, it might be because socks are a hot item for the homeless. Socks and undies are some of the first items shelters are asking for in their donation lists.

But browsing at Target is my fun little treat to myself while my kids are at soccer practice and I don't have time to go home! How am I supposed to feel whether or not the fuzzy sweaters are soft-soft or just look soft on my screen?!?!? Seriously, though, I'm setting more and more things to auto-deliver from Amazon, which sucks in its own way.

At the craft store I work in we lock up high theft items., according to our inventory report each week. Sometime that list is strange or surprising. Loll Hi monetary value doesn’t necessarily = high theft. Sometimes it’s the more consumable items, the most popular in a display, the easiest to conceal, highest street value or resale value (sometimes even in combination with other specific high theft items.) Sometimes (most) it’s some arbitrary reason that makes no sense to anyone but the thief. And there’s a LOT of organized shoplifting out there. They send people out to take one specific item that they’re reselling online in what looks like a legitimate business. 🤷 ETA I recently found a Facebook marketplace listing for a bunch of themed items from my store that are clearly stolen. They’re too new to be from someone’s stash, and all together they were way too expensive to be sold at this persons bundle price. There’s a lot of this going around.

I read that one of the Targets in San Francisco has everything locked up. I lived down the street from the one on Geary in 2021-22 and they had literally nothing locked up that I recall; I wonder if it's different now (they've certainly gone wild with the product prisons here in Seattle).

It’s frustrating and annoying that you like most of us are on a schedule and couldn’t get what you needed because they were locked up. I will say that Target has been aggressively promoting their buy online, drive up or pickup in store program. Personally, I don’t want to do that because there are usually more items I want to look at and consider than what I have on my list (and more often than not I see things in the store that remind me I’m almost out of something and need to restock). If I have to go into the store anyway, what’s the point of doing drive up? The only reason I can think of for me doing drive up is if I know there is a limited quantity of something specific available and I want to make sure I get one, and even then there’s no guarantee. Last year I was looking for a Ninja XL food processor that was on sale. I tried to order it online to make sure I’d get one and still ended up having to drive to three different stores before one actually had one to pick up.

I’m curious which locations have sock prisons. I assume one is the 2nd and Pike which I’ve never been in but heard has an out of control shoplifting problem. Is the other in a higher crime area as well?

When I was at the one in Northgate on Monday, they also had closed their self-checkout area.

What a shame to know things have gotten rough up at NG too. Same with Tukwila. I've only been in there once or twice, but it was a lovely, big, well stocked store (with nothing locked up) pre-pandemic.

The Targets around here don't really have anything locked up except for a very few over the counter meds and some electronics.
