We have been feeding Nico Purina ProPlan large breed Puppy since that was what he was being fed at the Humane Society.
Looking at Fromm, Orijen, and Stella & Chewy freeze dried. Also, Ollie or the Farmer’s Dog is a possibility.
My Haley ate Fromm for most of her life. Lab-mix that was 65 pounds in her summer svelte period. *grin* She was usually 70 lbs, give or take a few pounds. She lived to 15 yrs, 8 months. So, I know how a good food is important.
Thank you for any input.
ETA: Nico is 14.5 weeks and weight 23.4# on Thursday. He is gaining approximately 2 lbs a week. He is going to be huge if his paws and ears are any indication. The Humane Society said he was mostly Lab w/Border Collie. Thought he would be about Haley’s size. LOL! I think we are going to be lucky if he stays around 90#.

Marley gets chicken/green beans/sweet potatoes cooked in the crockpot and shredded, mixed with a little bit of Iams dry food. Occasionally will add some cooked ground beef in. Why? It’s healthier but the bit of dry kibble ensures he’s also getting supplements that I don’t have to confidence to do on my own.

I used to feed my dog those little Cesar meals. At 7 years, his stomach changed and now I have to make homemade food. I follow the “just food for dogs” recipe. My dog is a 6 pound chihuahua.

We have a 90 lb German Shepherd/Bernese Mountain Dog cross who eats Fromm dog food. He doesn’t love it but tolerates it if it’s mixed with some wet canned food or some cooked ground beef or chicken or pork or just about any type of people food.
There is no reason why I chose Fromm for him except I wanted a high quality food for him. It’s expensive so I don’t love that but I know he’s getting the nutrients he needs as he just turned 13 months old. He has now transitioned from the puppy food to adult large breed food.
I’ll be following this thread because I’d love to find him another brand that he loves but it’s so hard to figure out what to feed him.

I feed our 118 lb Bernese Mountain Dog a homemade raw food diet (rotating menus that were designed by a vet with extensive canine nutrition experience). He eats Stella & Chewy's freeze-dried raw when we travel with him. We've had great success with raw diets in the past, and Otto is thriving as well.
I'd love to use a commercial raw diet for him but they are prohibitively expensive. I estimated costs for a few and it was going to come out to ~$750/mo vs about $300/mo to feed him a homemade raw diet.

We recently tried Farmer’s Dog for our two, and while they loved it, we didn’t. It comes frozen in these plastic flat pack pouches and the food is like paste. It was a big pain for a couple reasons. One, it takes up a lot of freezer space especially if you have a big dog. Our big dog was supposed to eat one pouch a day but because we split it into am/pm that means that half of an open pack also needs to be stored in the fridge along with the one you’re thawing out for the next day. And two, because we also have a little dog that is only supposed to get 1/4 of a pack a day which was harder to divide. Plus we would have to store hers in the fridge for multiple days and it’s supposedly only “fresh” for four days. It was just really inconvenient.
Since the little dog is really picky, I started buying some bags of Fresh Pet from Costco to top off their dry food bowls since they liked the other stuff so much. The little one actually eats it which has to be better for her than the mini dog biscuit treats she prefers over her food. The Fresh Pet in the bag comes in little chunks which is so much easier to deal with than the pasty Farmer’s Dog. I can put a few days worth in a ziplock bag in the fridge and leave the rest in the freezer, but because it’s already in a kibble type form I can thaw out a few cups at a time and leave the rest in the bag in the freezer. I wouldn’t use that as my only food for the lab because it’s pretty expensive at about $24 for 19 cups, and the big dog would eat around 3 cups a day if it was all he was eating.
We have been feeding ours Nutro Natural Choice chicken and brown rice and that seems to be the dry food that our allergic lab tolerates best. The Nutro comes in a 30 lb bag and even that is spendy at about $75 a bag. Cost is definitely a factor for us. A big dog will eat you out of house and home!
Now our neighbor at the lake has a smaller senior dog that had been having a lot of health issues recently, so her vet suggested feeding her cooked chicken breasts and carrots. That’s all she eats. That dog was running around and acting like a puppy last summer! It was like night and day difference for her and the only big change was her diet.

So, it has been more about what he would eat than cost. My Haley wasn’t a big eater, though she was food motivated. 🤷🏻♀️ Nico is going to be different. Though, he has slowed down once he figured out he gets food regularly. The ferocity with which he ate when we first got him was shocking. Is the homemade rotation of recipes available on-line?

Granted, my dog is a 14 pound sheltie, but she gets Hill's Science Diet dry food. My vet recommended it, and she eats it well.
The other dogs are on prescription dog food for various ailments.

At present, he is getting shredded boiled chicken. I have topped off Nico’s kibble with the Fresh Pet. Thank you! I will check out the Nutro.

I serve my muttly affenpinscher Fromm's Gold for small breed dogs. It's what I fed my last dog and I still had some of it when she passed away so he inherited it. it's good quality and we've never had any issues with it.

Male shih tzu eats kibble and canned wet of Hill's Science Diet I/D due to sensitive stomach and GI stuff.
Female shih tzu mix eats kibble and canned wet of Hill's Science Sensitive Skin & Stomach.
With our previous shih tzu we tried one of those frozen, deluevered rx foods and not only was it costly but took up a lot of space and she hated it. It was for her kidney disease.
It also smelled horrible.

I've mostly fed my English Bulldogs Taste of the Wild Sierra Mountain (purple bag). It's what the foster mom of my first rescue fed her dogs so I just continued. I am currently mixing in a couple tablespoons of Natures Balance wet food with each feeding.
One of my previous bulldogs had horrible allergies on her feet so I tried Fromm. It was so long ago I can't remember why but after a few days I return the bag to the pet store and got a refund. I also tried the very bland limited Natures Balance dry food. She liked that and I continued feeding her that until she passed away but it didn't do too much to curb her feet issues.
ETA: I also feed my dogs "lunch" which consists of steamed veggies. Mostly a variety of broccoli, carrots, cucumbers and green beans.

Glad to read the positives about Fromm's. That's what we've been giving our senior dog for 2 years and she seems to enjoy it. My 9 month old pup is still on the Purina ProPlan since we bought the huge bag on sale and she unexpectedly topped out at 11 lbs so it will probably last her to 12 months I think we'll just transition her onto the Fromm's when that bag is gone. We used to make food at home: home-made broth, brown rice, ground beef, chicken, veg, and eggs smashed in at the end (including shell). The dogs thrived, but it took up so much fridge space.

I used to live next door to a young couple of veterinarian, they only gave pro plan sports to their own dogs and where adamant that it was the best and stress to me that the grain free food I was giving thinking it was the best should only be given to dogs that are allergic to grain. So at their recommendation I switched to pro plan sport and in three days their coat was significantly shinier and their 💩 was smaller ,what’s not to like about that

Fromm Pork and Applesauce kibble. My boys started on Orijen as puppies then moved to Fromm. We just had one of our dogs pass at almost 17 years old. The other two are 9 and almost 9 (large breed). They are very healthy, and we won't deviate from their great food--Fromm.

We were using only Fresh Pet when we had two dogs. The older one passed about a year ago at 16. Then the younger dog stopped eating. We have tried a ton of different things for him and are back to Fresh Pet. He has been consistently eating it for a few weeks now so we will continue it. Neither of them would eat the grain free Fresh Pet though.

Our 80ish pound lab is on Taste of the Wild, bison & venison grain free. That’s what he’s had since he was about a year old (he’s 6 now). I think his puppy food was Blue Buffalo large breed. I spent a lot of time looking up what would be best when we first got him, and when he moved from puppy to grown up, but honestly haven’t given it much thought since. He seems to enjoy it (he’s only picky about vegetables, like a damn toddler) and has appropriately sized/formed poops so we’ll stick with it until there’s an issue.

I make my own dog food for our 7 year old goldendoodle. She been on Purina Pro Plan, but started to have irregular bowel issues. I did a lot of research on commercial dog foods, and wasn’t liking what I read. I did research on making my own, and it didn’t seem all that hard.
I made a recipe that includes ground turkey, brown rice, many fresh veggies and ground egg shells for calcium. I tried adding turmeric, but her face is white and turmeric stained it something awful. I make about 2 weeks worth at a time, portion it in individual servings and freeze it. She loves it, her bowels have been good and I know exactly what she’s eating.

Generally Fromm and we rotate through proteins as our Mastiff mix gets itchy otherwise. The last couple of bags have been Diamond Naturals beef and sweet potato though and they have done well on it. The last bag of Fromm pork and applesauce made both dogs sick to their stomachs even though they’ve had it before without issue. Right before the pandemic hit I was using Volhard which is a base mix that you feed with raw ground beef. Both dogs did really well i it but I couldn’t get enough ground beef in the early days of the pandemic and prices have stayed high since then. I’d love to feed a completely raw diet but it’s just cost prohibitive for us right now with two large dogs.

We fed Murphy Fromm large breed puppy until he was about a year old and have switched to Fromm adult large breed. I’d read conflicting/bad things about grain free, so we wanted something with grain in it. He gets 2 cups in the morning and 2 at dinner time.
Murphy is a Maremma Sheepdog/Labrador Retriever/Rottweiler mix with a few other small percentages thrown in. We believe he turned a year in late October but we are not 100% as he was a dumped dog so we have no way to know for sure.

We use The Farmer's Dog. We rescued our pug about a year ago, and he was so incredibly smelly all the time. We did a Farmer's Dog trial and his digestive issues disappeared. He also is, for a pug, a pretty healthy weight, which is a real struggle with his breed.
It's expensive. It's also kind of work, because you have to get in a rhythm of thawing and portioning it, although the plus side is that it does ship to your house.
Anyway, I'm not shilling for them, but it has worked for my dog.

I make food for my dogs in the Instant Pot. It is green beans, barley, brown rice, carrots, chicken breast, a bit of flank meat and blueberries. Mix in a little Taste of the Wild Salmon and Sweet Potato kibble, but very little. I have an 11 year old Whippet and 7 year old Greyhound and they are pretty good about eating this food and have been most of their lives.

I have been feeding my dog Primal freeze dried chicken or the turkey flavor. Freeze dried is still considered raw, so you need to use caution in the kitchen when fixing it. I rehydrate it with reconstituted powdered goat’s milk. Goat’s milk doesn’t dissolve in warm water fully so I use one of those battery-powered frother gadgets. It makes a nice foamy sauce that I pour over the nuggets and then let it set for a few minutes to absorb. I have tried other foods, but this one seems to agree with him the best. He has smaller well formed poops that don’t smell horrible. When I tried one of the packaged human-quality food brands, he had really loose stools that were stinky and he went more often. He will eat anything, but the freeze dried makes his poops easier to pick up and that works for me. I highly recommend going to this site to read the reviews of whatever food you are considering. www.dogfoodadvisor.com/ The Primal that I feed has a 5 point rating, which is their highest rating. I also make my own dehydrated chicken strips for treats and always make extra of most vegetables, just steamed, and I portion out a bit for him before I season mine. He loves cooked carrots, broccoli, sweet potato, and green beans. I give him the vegetables as treats during the day and the Primal with goat’s milk morning and night. You cannot find Primal in box stores. I had a speciality high end pet store near my home in California and that is where I bought all the different foods, trying several before settling on the Primal. I now order it from Chewy to be shipped to the house. Amazon also carries it.
