Doing mine this morning and it occurred to me it’s something I have never discussed with anyone. Why would I want to talk about it? Well, people talk about cleaning ovens, changing bed sheets etc. so how clean is your trap? Incase it’s called something totally different in other parts of the world, I mean the cover in the shower tray, where the water goes down the drain and the inside of the actual top drain area under the cover. There’s a little basket type thing in mine that can be lifted out once the drain cover is removed so the cover and basket can both be cleaned as can the top bit of the drain.

Once a month-ish. We have a problem with our shower getting blocked (bad plumbing!) and I live with a yeti.

I have a TubShroom and clean it out before each shower. Much easier than waiting until the water is slow to drain!

I lose a lot of hair daily, and showering seems to encourage more hair to jump ship. I have to clean the drain thingy every time I take a shower or the water won't drain.

LOL. Funny question!
I voted a few times a year. But really, it depends on the house. Some allow more hair down than others. Our current house has large drains and a good cover. Shorter hair washes away and longer hair stays on top to just be wiped away. Our last house was a typical US sort of drain and that was probably cleaned monthly.
We had to clean the shower drain in our Belgian house almost weekly. It obviously had a narrowing or partial blockage farther down and we were just putting off the inevitable. Unfortunately, that drain cover was a pain to pull off.
The worst I ever saw was the hand sink in our powder room (US term for just a sink and a toilet) in our Las Vegas house. The house was new and only had a tenant for 3 months. The sink was slow to drain, so DH cleaned it. He pulled out a clump the size of a large mouse! How a hand sink got so clogged in three months is beyond me.

We used to use way too much liquid Drano trying to keep our shower drain running freely. It never really seemed to clear it completely. I decided to try one of those barbed plastic drain cleaning things and it works amazing. We use it whenever we notice our drain slowing down - maybe once every 2 or 3 months.
I’m not very squeamish, but spoiler alert, the gobs of hair that thing pulls up can be gross. But I’m happy to not be sending all those chemicals down the drain any more.

Be careful with those plastic drain cleaning things. They work great but after a while they get brittle and one broke off in our drain. That was a fun mess. My husband spent a good deal of time trying to get it out. He finally did and we don't use them any more. Too bad they don't make them in metal.

I have long hair and I shed worse than a pet. My hair is everywhere. Because of that I brush my hair thoroughly right before I get into the shower. It really helps as I rarely clog the drain with my hair.

In my last house I used a silicone strainer type thing that sat in the drain and I cleaned it after each shower if needed but definitely after a shower where I also washed my hair - even though I brush before-hand shampooing and conditioning really loosens my hair and I literally collect clumps of hair. Thankfully I have a lot of hair! I do try to collect it in my hands as I condition instead of chancing it going down the drain but my stopper things definitely caught lots that I missed. In my new house I have a really large shower and the drain is a channel along the back wall. It takes the 2 of us to lift the portion of tile that fits in this channel to get to the small basket strainer. We’ve been doing this monthly or when we notice the drain slowing. Thankfully DSO shaves his head and disposes of his hair in the Garbage, not the sink or tub I’m not bothered by this gross task but this guy is… youtu.be/oyFT5i6Ryz0?si=w1Ix-zy5VbODT754ETA we had one of those barbed plastic things…broke in the drain and necessitated a plumber to fix as I pulled 2 pipes apart trying to retrieve it. Couldn’t leave it in there as it would have collected a massive ball of hair just sitting there..

I don't have one for some reason. At my old house I would clean the drain constantly, I even had a 30' metal auger I would use several times a year. It seemed like no matter what the drain was just always clogged. So I assumed it would be the same here but it isn't. Even without anything covering the drain I just don't have problems. Saying all of that... I have a new kitten, she's 8 months old and decided to play in the shower drain a few weeks ago. She somehow pulled out a big old hair ball, soap scum and all from inside the shower drain. It was disgusting. But hey, thanks for earning your keep little one!

Cleaning the shower trap is one of my least favourite tasks. I do it every month or so, and it is always disgusting. 😄 My DIL on the other hand is the sort of person who thinks the smellier and more disgusting a task is, the more fun it is to do. She’s told me to leave it for her to do when she visits, but unfortunately that’s not quite often enough!

It isn’t even on my radar, as it falls under a “DH” responsibility.

I have long, thick hair and am worse than our cat for shedding so I do it after every shower. We also use one of these silicone drain mats (although ours is white) which makes the job a lot easier. Neisey that poor guy! DH was watching with me and asking if he was hamming it up but we quickly agreed, nope. 😂

After every shower, or two. I don’t actually take the trap out though, I just use my feet to pull out the wads of hair.

I have a silicone drain mat in my shower that traps any hair before it would go down the drain, so almost never. That won’t work in DD’s shower though because he bathroom has a tub with a pull up drain plug. Instead of taking it all apart to clean it, we just have some professional strength drain cleaning stuff that clears it when it starts to drain more slowly, maybe every 6-8 months. I have her trained to try to keep as much of her long hair from going down the drain as she can but some always does. She sheds like a yeti!

Our shower drains have a plate over them with holes in them. They are screwed down. If there is hair on top of this drain plate, I remove that, but I never unscrew it from the floor of the shower. About every 5 years of so, we use draino in the drains as a preventative measure.
