Update: I ran over to Costco and got Bose wireless noise cancelling headphones that my girlfriend bought last week and is very happy with, having just returned from travel where she used them a lot. They are charging now.
I'm now bumbling around trying to find things on the iPad itself. Not having great luck navigating around yet. I thought I had successfully installed the Netflix app and downloaded the first episode of Boy Swallows Universe but I can't find the app or the epi....
Luckily I've got friends who have had ipads for ages and will be able to point me in the right direction. I'm a Luddite in terms of the iPad, I tell ya!
Hi! I'm finally charging my new (and first) iPad in order to set it up for flying on Tuesday. Wondering how you like to use it during flights?
I understand that I can download movies or tv shows to the iPad. I'm not sure what I need in order to watch a movie on it without disturbing my fellow passengers. I am embarrassed to say that I have never used Bluetooth technology. Not in the car, not anywhere. Feeling like a Luddite right now. Are Apple Air Pods the way to go?
Are there game apps you enjoy? I usually read on my Kindle. I'm always a little dopey due to the anti-nauseant I take so I'd love trying playing a game or watching something on my iPad for a change.
Off to watch some iPad for dummies vids.

I don’t know if the new iPads have a headphone jack or not. If not, you can get a lightning port (charging hole) plug that has a headphone jack and use corded headphones/earbuds. Bluetooth drains your battery fast and ime AirPods are over rated and expensive.
I’ve been playing Woodoku.

I disagree! You want cordless earbuds, especially for travel. There’s no cords to get tangled in that tiny little space on an airplane. If it’s in the budget, get the AirPods Pro for the noise canceling. If you have an Apple Store, they will help you set them up (although it’s super easy—the iPad will give you prompts and walk you through it. There’s also a million YouTube videos you could watch.
I’m not a fan of reading on my iPad because of the glare, but I do on a flight. Download the kindle app and all of your books in your account will be there, including currently library books.
For videos, download the streaming app (Prime, Netflix, Hulu, etc) that you subscribe to. When you go to the individual show/movie, it will show if you can download it or not. Again, there are tons of YouTube videos on how to do this.

I download magazines and books to read while in flight. Apple News+ has a good selection of magazines, but I get most of mine through the Overdrive/Libby app using my library card.

Which airline are you flying with?
Air Canada has free wifi in-flight if you are an Areoplan member. Easy to get. Find out what aircraft you are on. I watched Oppenheimer last Sunday flying home from Fort Lauderdale to Toronto.
I agree with wireless buds.

I'll try to get to a store today or tomorrow. I'm trying to pamper myself and rest as much as possible, eat as much raw garlic as possible in order to boost my immune system as it seems I'm fighting off some sort of bug. I might have to wait and get the airpods or _________ "back home" and use them on my return flights.

When I fly, I listen to music. I have Air Pods but they hurt my ears, so I recently got Bose BT noise canceling headphones (because I couldn't reconcile paying nearly twice as much for aesthetics of the Apple ones) The Bose sync so easily with my iPad and iPhone. Agree with BT. Wires are a PIA on a plane.

Really any corded will work for me. I’m not picky.

My iPad is my constant companion and I won’t ever travel without it. You can use any brand of wireless headphones or earbuds. I have multiple sets at various price points (mostly obtained in $9.99 Bags of Crap from Woot!) and they all work great. Make sure you pack a charger with a wall brick for not only your iPad but for your earbuds too. A lot of devices today don’t come with the brick anymore, just a USB cable.
Downloaded movies and tv shows are great airplane time wasters, but don’t write off digital books, magazines or music that you can download before heading to the airport too. Games are another good option, look for the ones that don’t require an internet connection to play. I’ve been playing BubbleCloud again but I’ve also liked playing word games or jigsaw or puzzle type games.
Sometimes when traveling there are helpful apps you can use once you’re at your destination (Disney parks apps come immediately to mind, but also some cruise ships, other theme parks, shopping malls and maybe national parks have apps with maps, information, etc.). Download those apps BEFORE you leave and while you are connected to power. Don’t plan on being able to do that on the go. Nothing is worse than trying to frantically download some travel app when you’re stuck in a place with a crappy or nonexistent wifi connection or an almost dead device battery and nowhere to plug in a charger.
If you are artistic and have an Apple Pencil, art apps are great too. I particularly love Procreate for that but there are a bunch of coloring apps too that could be kind of relaxing and fun.
ETA: I have a set of Soundcore Liberty Pro wireless noise cancelling earbuds that are every bit as good as my DD’s $200 AirPod Pros and they were nowhere near that price.

I prefer headphones to earbuds when flying and listening to movies. Sometimes, unless you have noise cancelling feature, it is hard to hear the people speak on movies. Music is usually not an issue, but for movies I need headphones.
Some games need the internet to work. One way to check before you leave home is put your iPad in airplane mode and see if you can still play the game. And actually, some games are better in airplane mode because you won’t get ads.
I have a pencil for my iPad so sometimes on flights I’ll doodle or write notes to myself.

They hurt and one wouldn't stay in my ear. I'll look into the Bose you mention. Thanks!

Oh, one other thing about earbuds vs headphones…you can’t lose a headphone down into the cracks around the airplane seat. My one fear about using earbuds on a plane is that they’ll fall out and I’ll lose them forever to the airplane seat. I can fall asleep with my headphones on knowing I won’t lose it.

You can download the Kindle app on your iPad and read all of your books there. That would save having to travel with 2 devices and keep up with them. I am able to have all my digital library books delivered to my Kindle app and read them there if I choose.

I also agree about the AirPods…I much prefer my wireless headphones (I also have Bose). I think my ears are just too dainty and delicate for AirPods. They hurt and fall out all of the time.

I love my iPad. I have the kindle app on my iPad and my iPhone. Although, I will admit to playing games more often than reading on it. But, all those yummy books are there waiting for me and I get joy out of that. Your iPad will always be close to you, which is usually the case with most users. Enjoy 😊
I listen to audible books almost every night to help me drift off to sleep.
Second edit ~ I listen to biographies at night. So it doesn’t really matter where I start or fall asleep to or wake up to. The books on my kindle app are fiction, best seller type, that I save for rainy day situations.

I found the original Air Pods incredibly painful to wear, but the Pros with the smallest available tip are great. The noise reduction feature on the 2nd gen pros is amazing for planes.

If you run into issues or questions at any time with your iPad call Apple. 800/275-2273. They will work with you and talk in simple terms.
If they ask to view your screen you will see them. There is a permission link you have to click. It's a wonderful thing! They will move their arrow and tell you what to click. They cannot click a thing or change a thing on your iPad. It's completely safe and very helpful!

I like to listen to books or my podcasts when cleaning the house (or my continual unpacking) every single day. I bought these wireless ones last year and they are so much better than any of my previous purchases. They hold a charge for almost a full day and the little charging box can go with you for recharging for several days without needing to be recharged. But most importantly, do not fall out of your ears due to the soft bit that goes around your ear like a pair of glasses. I have a small ear opening and so many kinds of earphones either hurt my ears or fall out when I am walking around. This brand doesn’t hurt, doesn’t fall out, and is only $24 right now! They are so comfortable that I forget that I have them on. I once got into the shower before realizing I still had them on. Fortunately, it wasn’t a hair washing day so they didn’t get wet before I realized they were still on! www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0C7CQZYCG/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_search_asin_title?ie=UTF8&psc=1

Thank you Lexica. I can’t tell you how many ear buds and ear phones I have tried. That is my only complaint is that my iPad is not louder. I can make it louder but it involves where I place it.

flanz, I don’t know about availability in your area, but I just checked mine and if I ordered them right now, they would arrive tomorrow. At least, it claims they would be here tomorrow. And that is without paying the 2.99 rush delivery. Just a thought.
