Yes, I knew. I do live in Alabama. Have never been to Monroeville, where Harper Lee is from.

One of my favorite movies and book. Our grandson is named Atticus, and he named his new puppy Scout, which was totally random for him!

If you saw the names Atticus Finch or Boo Radley would you instantly recognize the names? I was traveling recently in a city that had stores side by side - the corner store was Boo Radley's and next door was Atticus' coffee shop. I laughed and said. "Oh cool names, from the book". People looked at me like I was from Mars. These were four women close to my own age ( late 50s). I was stunned they didn't know what I was talking about. Would you know? Not only do I know, but I know that you were in Spokane

Instant name recognition. To Kill a Mockingbird was already a classic when I was growing up. Read it in high school.
I don’t begrudge our friends from Commonwealth countries not being familiar with it, though.

Yes! The book was frequently required reading in school, and the movie is iconic. I have read the book several times; it’s a favorite.

Yes, but I’ve never read the book. I’d definitely always recognize Atticus Finch, but I don’t think I would have recognized just Boo Radley if they weren’t paired together. Same for me.

Absolutely.
On the same note, I taught a kid named Uriah. In the teacher's lounge I mentioned his name along with Uriah Heep. Not one of the teachers knew what I was talking about. There is the Dicken's character and the band. I was gobsmacked.

Yes, immediately! I have read the book numerous times.
Asked my son if he recognized the names. He knew they were from a book, but not which one.
It was not a book in either of our curriculums at school.

Don’t ask me how I did 5 years of advanced English in high school and never read this! Same here, I was in AP English all four years of HS and never read the book. But I do know the character Atticus Finch is an attorney.

I know some of the responses seem to think that we should know who this person was. I was never required to read the book in any school I went to. While I was in school, I probably moved over 20 times, changing schools all the times, I probably just missed it. The movie came out six years before I was even born. It was nothing that was talked about. Apparently nothing my parents read or made any kind of impression.
Now over the years I have heard about the book in general, talked about, but nothing was ever said wanting me to pick it up to read.
I know at least two of my kids had to read it for school, as that book as been in and out of the house for years.

I knew immediately and knew which book was the source.
If you are outside the US, I would not expect you to know the book or the reference.
I always thought Boo Radley was such a unique name/nickname that it stuck with me.

I recognized the name Atticus Finch, but not Boo Radley. I never read the book or watched the movie, but now I want to. I have a cousin who's middle name is Scout and that is what she goes by. I'll have to ask her if her parents named her because of the book.

I grew up in south AL near Monroeville, so yes, I recognize the names. I've had a cat named Boo Radley, and a lifetime crush on Atticus Finch.

Of course. How many Atticus's does anyone know? And I immediately picture Gregory Peck and Robert Duvall.

Yes although I will admit I've never read the book. The movie is a favorite - Gregory Peck is outstanding.

Absolutely. I read the book and loved the movie. I would have had to stop in. We re-watched the movie during our pandemic movie-thon where we chose movies every evening from a list of Oscar winners and the AFI's 100 best movies of all time.

I would. Back in grade school our class had to read the book, discuss the book and then do a book report on it.

I know it — I don’t remember the movie, but it was required reading in middle school or high school (back in the dark ages). It’s not being taught as often these days.
