I used fountain pens all through high school because there was a stationery store across the street. I had TONS of supplies but when I left for college I stopped. Fast forward to last week and the NYT had an article about an ink controversy. I started reminiscing and now I am all over it because I remember how much I LOVED using fountain pens.
I ordered an inexpensive one over the weekend to see if the love is still there. Yup. Sure is. Now I have to figure out how many pens I need so that my favorite colors are filled and ready to go. My pen when I become a judge is absolutely going to be a fountain.
Any other aficionados out there? Tips? Tricks? Faves?

I have a small collection. I have mostly TWSBI and Pilot ones. I love having a couple filled with different colors of ink. My favorite websites are JetPens and Goulet Pen Company. I like that Goulet sells ink samples, so you can try out different brands and colors. I don’t have any expensive ones, but they can get quite expensive. I don’t do it often enough, but I clean out the pens maybe 3-4 times a year.

I don't use one now, probably because of the messes I used to make in school for the years we HAD to use them (grades 4-6, I think). I now work part-time in afterschool care in an elementary school here in Germany, and the kids begin to use fountain pens in 2nd or 3rd class. Some of them are just as messy as I was and some of them produce beautiful writing with them. It makes me want to buy one and try again.

When I was taught cursive in 4th grade it was with a fountain pen. I stopped using it when I went to high school. Now you’ve tempted me to get a fountain pen and give it a try again.

We were required to use fountain pens, to learn writing. I can clearly picture mine now, Schaefer - green, see through. It was probably at the low end quality. I liked to use it, but I do think I remember it not writing very consistently. Could have been me though. Yes, you should (must) reward yourself with whatever pen you choose, when you become a judge. 🥰

We were expected to use fountain pens throughout high school, having started with dip pens at about age 9. I have a couple of Parkers but rarely use them. I hardly hand write anything any more. I do feel grown up when I use a fountain pen!

I have a few.... Or more? I had my mother's but don't know where it went. Now you've gotten me thinking where my grandfather's pens are. A few were hand carved wood .
I have used some specialty ones for calligraphy. Way out of practice for that!!!

I love a good fountain pen. I have several Lamys that I use for everyday. I have a handcarved wood one that is very pretty but not my favorite to write with. I have a Schaffer that I was given in 5th grade. I can't really justify buying more, but if I did decide to collect something new, I think fancy fountain pens and various inks would be my thing. Oh-- my favorite ink is Noodler's Lexington Gray. Though I also will pull out an aqua or green once in a while.
My husband's neurologist is a fountain pen fan. She collects the really expensive antique varieties, and more often than not she has a big old ink stain on her fingers and/or coat. It gives us something fun to talk about at least.

I actually just started a couple months ago in an effort to help the cramping in my hand when writing. So far I really like the Lamy Safari pen, it definitely flows better. I did not realize the default ink is blue, I prefer black. I will have to update my post over on GS board. If you want to be enabled check out jetpens.com.

My daddy had a fountain pen obsession and so I wrote with them quite a bit when I was younger. I'll have to dig around in my desk because I'm sure several are still there. I had not thought about fountain pens for years! Such a lovely memory... and it always felt like such an elegant way to write. My pen when I become a judge is absolutely going to be a fountain. Keep me posted. I'll definitely return to New York to celebrate with you -- our next dinner is on me!

I had about 6 adorable Pentel or Kokuyo or Tombow fountain pens. They were pastel and beautiful. I bought every beautiful pen or pencil Japan made and lived next door to a Tombow store!

I don't, but DH has several and loves using different colors of inks.
He actually does reviews of pens, inks, and papers on a couple of different forums, and we tease him that he is being a "pen-fluencer."

I found one in my father’s desk at his office many years ago when I was a teen. When I asked about it, he didn’t even remember it being there and told me I could have it if I wanted it. I loved writing with it, not only because they feel so cool but because it had belonged to my father.
I don’t know if I still have it. If I do, it would have been in a box of childhood things that was in my garage rafters. I will eventually get to that box and will cross my fingers before going through it that the pen will be there.

I used them as soon as I was allowed to, because we weren't allowed to use biros in school. We went straight from pencils to fountain/cartridge pens.
Once I left school I "graduated" to using biros, and now the only time I use a fountain pen is for calligraphy in the church books of remembrance. I love doing calligraphy.

I love them and used them a lot. However, I'm left-handed and it's not a good combination.

Check out Amazon for inexpensive sets of disposable fountain pens in sets of different colors. Probably not the greatest quality but if there are colors you use less often, it might be a less expensive way to have the colors on hand without too much of an investment.

Me!! I’m a huge fountain pen fan. I spend some of my free time in fountain pen communities on Discord 😅
If you’re looking for something solid but inexpensive (with real ink vs cartridges), TWSBI Eco has never failed me.
I’m thinking about a Leonardo Momento Zero or Sailor Pro Gear Slim as my next pen.

I have an Elysee ‘En Vogue green Laque leather’ fountain and ball pen set from the early ‘90s that I use. Still it their original box. I regularly use violet, green and teal ink .

Thaks for this thread! I love fountain pens - have dozens of them but they are all inexpensive. I do have one nice Lamy but I prefer my cheapo Preppy pens more!

I have mostly Kaweco, Lamy and TWSBI, but I did splurge and get a Diplomat Aero last year (it is pink!), and that’s the most expensive pen I’m going to buy. I drop things all the time, so there’s no way I’m going to spend more than that on a pen. I love Diamine and Lamy inks, and the great thing about ink is all the glimmer inks you can find.

I have an interesting story about a fountain pen. I worked in the ICU for many years. This was back in the olden days when doctors hand wrote notes and orders. One morning I found a pretty fountain pen at the nurses station. I knew of several doctors who used a fountain pen. I tucked it in my pocket and started asking around. I specifically asked the doctors I knew used one and no takers. So I started asking everyone I saw. After a month or so, still no takers. I could tell it was a pretty expensive pen because it was heavy. So, eventually I gave it to security, for lost and found and promptly forgot about it. A year later my manager hands me the pen and said security brought it back for me to keep. So, when I got home with it, I started doing some research on it.Turns out it’s a Cartier Trinity. At the time, worth about $600!!! Now worth about $400. I use it to address my Christmas cards.

my favorite ink is Noodler's Lexington Gray. That color is in my cart at Goulet. Along with Walnut. I finally had a moment to try out a fountain pen in my planner and since there is no shadowing I am sold. The ink I tried doesn't bleed through my planner or my journal. My enabler homie (we literally shop for everything. books, makeup. yarn. now pens) told me about an ink store not far from one of the bookstores we visit so we are planning to go in the next few days.

Well, I haven't used one for years and this post got me poking around but not committed to anything yet. Today, I opened a video of an Archer and Olive sub box sneak peak. THERE IS A FOUNTAIN PEN AND INK in there!! So I will get that in a day or two and play with the pen. Then we will see how deep of a rabbit hole I then encounter. Gray and brown ink sound very intriguing.

So today I was into my After School Program - our kids are 1st - 4th graders. I asked one of the 2nd graders if they used fountain pens already and he said no - they can get their 'pen license' towards the end of this school year, so I am guessing between Easter and Summer. I also asked some of the other carers, who have children who have either finished school or are in higher grades, and they said once the kids finish Grundschule (Elementary; 1st-4th grades) and go off to the next level of education it is pretty much open slather and they can use what they like to write.

I think I was in the 4th grade when we had to use them for a while. Later, a cousin showed me how to refill cartridges to make them cheaper to use AND I had something that allowed me to lift up the ink if I made a mistake. I LOVED that and used them in high school and business college. I guess I lost them in a move. I would have LOVED colors but all I had was blue.
I think I'm "MAD" at you, now I want to get a fountain pen and some pretty colors. I looked online, apparently Staples doesn't carry them, you have to order from them BUT Hobby Lobby has them in stock and with all the car trouble, won't be driving an hour to HL in quite a while. I wish I knew what happened to my fountain pen.
